What games are you playing?

I am playing Enderal (overhaul mod of Skyrim) and like it. Which is quite funny, because I never played vanilla Skyrim or any other official Elder Scrolls game (Ok, except from few minutes of Morrowind).

I'm in the middle of the 1990's point-and-click adventure version of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

This is a powerful story, exploring heavy topics such as rape and the holocaust, and redemption. You control each of five characters who have been singled out by an evil computer, called AM, for eternal torture. Despite the grim subject matter, the atmosphere is awash with a sense of 90s PC gaming nostalgia, and Harlan Ellison himself voices the part of AM! It's far from a flawless classic: the execution is clunky in places and the puzzles are illogical and confusing, but the stories and characters are interesting and it's one of the better science fiction adventure games from the time.

Selected images from an ongoing Train Simulator Classic quick-drive from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh on The Kyle Line UK route. The train is headed by a Highland Railway "Jones Goods" 4-6-0 tendered steam locomotive, seen in HR yellow, from the third-party loco maker Caledonia Works:

The start of another Train Simulator Classic drive, from Crewe to Shrewsbury UK, featuring another favorite steam loco, the LNWR Greater Britain 2-2-2-2 compound, in Lilac & Cream which, so far as I know, was a special occasion livery and would not be seen on a workaday run like this in real life.

Chilling in the shade of Crewe Station, circa 0755 on a cloudy mid-Autumn morning, sun still low in the sky:

I had to reinstall Win10 a while back due to unrepairable boot partition corruption. Since then, the only "major" game I've reinstalled is TSC. The one other game I play at the moment is an online Crossword Puzzle.

I'm contemplating starting The Pandora Directive again. It's a FMV adventure game from the 1990s - highly cool at the time; slightly less cool now but with extra nostalgic charm. I started it about a decade ago but gave up with it through lack of time.

I've started playing Far Cry 5, my first venture into this series. So far it's good going, if a little repetitive in what you need to do. Seems like I'll be sinking a lot of hours into it to complete though!

One of my favourite game series - I thought 3 and 4 were the best.

5 is on Gamepass and I fancied something different to get my teeth into. Not sure why I've never played the series before as it has all the things I enjoy in a game. FC6 is on GP too so might have to go into that one if I enjoy this enough :)

Now about 38 hours in to Far Cry 5, with two regions done and started on the third. So much to do, though I am spending plenty of time doing all the side quests and missions, though know I've missed some. I'll likely do the same in the third region and then look at what I need for achievements before putting it down. I'm enjoying it - have to for the time spent! - but it gets somewhat samey at times. The story is keeping me going!

Just finished Neo Cab, which is a visual novel presented as a game. Very SF and cyberpunk story: a woman is a gig driver in a city called Los Ojos, and sometimes called Automation City. She's come to town to live with her best friend, who suddenly goes missing. The main character tries desperately to eake out a living by driving a cab, having conversations with fares and trying to figure out what happened to her friend. Her friend is connected to a group trying to take on the big evil corporation that dominates most of the world at this point. Love the visuals and music; the story was very absorbing, and there's a fair amount of replayability.

I finished up with Far Cry 5, not quite pushing through to do all side missions, etc. I enjoyed it and it was a nice change of pace for me.

Since then I've started playing Dead Island 2, which feels almost identical to the first game, but set in LA. I was hoping the more I played the more I'd get into it, but I just got tired of the gameplay and the story wasn't particularly stand-out enough to keep me playing. I've not uninstalled it yet, but it's looking likely. I've also restarted Skyrim, a game I've sunk many many hours into in the past, but never finished the story. Aiming to do that this time, but I'm already getting sidetracked with sidequests...

My PC gaming remains limited to online Crossword Puzzles and Train Simulator Classic, driving steam trains and documenting my journeys at the official Dovetail forums. Here's a set of images from the start of a new multipart screenshot series. The train consists of LNWR Webb Coal tank No. 1054 pulling MK1 coaches. The drive begins at Liverpool Lime Street Sta and will eventually end in Manchester.

Hey, it keeps me off the streets (except during my daily exercise-walks) and is just the thing to pass time during a reading slump such as I find myself In now.

Everquest2 just launched a legacy server called Origins. Its a harken back to the good ol' days of the first launch of the game over 20 years ago. Before all the multiple machinations of various production groups ending up as the mess the live endgame is currently.

My wife an I rolled a couple of toons there this weekend. Its fun being broke and struggling again :)

I've struggled somewhat with gaming recently. Been off work and post-op so been trying to distract myself with games, but nothing is really hitting the spot. Have dabbled in Borderlands 2 (again), Final Fantasy XV, Forza Horizon 3, Cities Skylines, and more recently The Crew 2 (which has managed to take a fair bit of my time). Still dropping into Forza Horizon 5 weekly to do the playlist, but nothing more.

I have the same problem quite often, sometimes nothing really connects. Recently I've bought Skyrim, Greedfall and The Outer Wilds and I couldn't get into any of them. Skyrim in particular was a real disappointment. However, this week I got Alien Isolation and the sheer terrifying adrenalin rush of it seems to have hit the spot, I'm really enjoying it!

Death Stranding. Trouble Standing, more like. The graphics are glorious but the gameplay and story - whilst I knew I was in for something a little different from the developer - are actually horrible. Horrible, horribly illogical and horribly boring. I played for about 10 hours but have lost the will to go on. Can anyone convince me it gets better or do I just not get it?

Soma. This was pretty great. A clever science fictional story about the nature of consciousness, set deep under the ocean following a worldwide disaster, delivered in an effective way. A few too many attempts to introduce some unnecessary horror into the mix made playing the game an ordeal at times, but overall it was a very effective combination of exploration, puzzles and impactful plot twists.
