What is the hardest part of writing for you?

I also find it very difficult to focus on one idea at a time, and end up making no real progress on anything.

Yeah! That is my hugest obstacle for the piece I am working on right now. I wrote the first chapter, went back and reread it and touched up. Then read it again. I absolutely hate it! I still have the file on my computer, but I don't like it at all! It's resulted in zero progress since that chapter.

Yeah, I can relate to the time difficulties. And trying to write while mad kids run round the house :(

Also:
  • getting started
  • being over-critical
  • never being anywhere near a computer or having pen and paper when inspiration strikes

:(

It just depends on the mood for me. But considering i am pretty dissapointed at what is before me, i feel i should just quit...

Hardest part in writing for me is the middle.

When I get an idea i'm off and i basically can write no problem but when the story reachers the middle i just start to lose interest and try real hard to get to the end which im interested in. So its very hard for me to complete stuff

But r well.....

There's an old saying mate....

"Winners don't quit, and quitters don't win."

Don't give up. Have self belief and keep following your dreams. Some people will try to lift you up. Others will try to drag you down, but never lose faith in yourself.

well, i'm considering restarting the whole beginning of my book... but i wish i had more people giving me feedback.. PM me if you wanna give feedback

I am working on some feedback for you, but it is a big chunk of work digging through the whole thing.
As a general high level bit of feedback, focus on writing skills: the basic grammer stuff. There are lots of opportunities for improvement in these areas. I will return the manuscript with examples. I would take some writing classes, as I think you have a great opportunity to get the training in the mechanical parts of writing while you are still in school. As to story etc... I need more time to finish critiquing. My day job has been a bit... well, busy.
However, I am impressed by the size of the work you have done thus far, it is a testament to your desire to write, and that is the great first step.
Honestly though, don't get unrealistic about this first one being something to publish. It is practice, and is valuable as such. Get it done, learn the mechanics, and re-write. Don't quit. I re-wrote 5 times completely... and that was after understanding the mechanics...

I think it you can just make up wild names. And as the reader sees the name enough times it becomes natural, just take Pug from Feists midkemia books. What kind of name is that? But I accept it. Strange...

And you could also do like Jordan: mydraal. He has just shortened and changed "murder all"...

You could take the frase "writing for you" and make it into Witifry. Of course this only applies to fictional names....

If you want real names i suggest you look up some statistics or something. Ey. I think I saw something like a name list posted by someone earlier in your post...

Names can be difficult, alright. They can also be found in strange places. The phone book has been mentioned; I have used that device on occassion, when inspiration fails. It is a good idea to keep a list of 'possible names' whenever you have a run on them.
Names can be found in stranger places, too. One of my friends has run an RPG campaign for over 20 years, and two of the most enduring characters are a pair of elves named Rahway and Raritan. Good, reasonable sounding names for elves, most people would say. However, if you happen to live in New Jersey, USA, you might note that Rahway is the name of a racetrack, and Raritan is the home of a mental hospital.
I haven't personally played in that campaign for a number of years now, but last I knew Rahway and Raritan were quite well adjusted individuals...
As I understand it, my friend came up with the names by spotting them on the Interstate highway signs.

Actually completing a story has always been difficult for me. Previously, I've always written a few chapters, then, when I go back to review it, I decide its crap and get rid of it. Very productive, as you may imagine.

I'm taking a new tact on my latest project- I'm just going to write, write, write, and not look back until I have a first draft completed. I think I'll be less likely to trash it if I'm a few hundred pages/work hours into the thing.

I think I just figured out the universal answer to this:
The hardest part of writing is BEING GOOD AT IT.
No matter where you struggle, that is still the universal challenge...

The difficult thing for me is plot! I am pretty good at creating places and characters, describing motives and scenery.....but spinning together a web of interconnected suspenseful events seems to be beyond me. Maybe I need to team up with someone!! lol

Yes, you seem to have described yourself rather well. And while I would like to work with you, I must protest that Catherine has 'dibs'.

The only help she needs is a boot in the behind. Care to help? On three then....one....two...three!

lol! You just reminded me of lethal weapon!!!

"What, do we do it ON three, or AFTER three? Like, 1, 2 , 3 GO? or 1, 2, and GO?"

Dagnabit Mer I was perfectly clear that we go on "three". There is no "Go".

Awright then. When I say 'go', we all go on the count of 'three'.

Oh bugger.

So Catherine has "dibs".......oh well, I'll just go and drown my disappointment in a pint at the Arm, where I am appreciated.
