What Kind of Stories?

Good morrow, all!

What kind of short stories, books, novels, tomes or series would you be most interested in reading? Stories that you have yet to see be written, topics you have not yet seen covered, or maybe your favorites just revised or revisited. I've been on a kick for stories dealing with absolutism and consequence. Through a science fiction, fantasy, and horror lens of course. What about you?

This is the question that leads to the stories I write. So, of course, I imagine you're asking in order to find new ideas for yourself.

One that I come back to every few years are schools for magicians. Those are often Young Adult stories for me, though I loved Lev Grossman's The Magicians trilogy, both the books and the TV show. The university setting was only one of the many aspects I loved.

Anyhow, I have several different stories set in a school for magicians. And others that are schools for supernaturals. All are for a YA audience with teenage protagonists. Realistic relationships (romance, friendship, any "relationship") between students and students, students and teachers (platonic here!), etc. are one of the things I want to do in each of them. Another is serious consequences for breaking rules, and including modern technology either as an aid to magic or to address its absence.

Those stories are all in the idea and planning phases. Family and friendship are important themes in my work. And, since the pandemic, I've shifted focus to writing more fun and lighthearted stories. Stories with characters that you just enjoy hanging out with. The type that, while you want to read faster to learn what happens, you simultaneously want to read slower so you can spend more time with the characters.
