Who will replace Goodkind and Jordan?

There is a back history with Sanderson Kaeru that you have to understand to get the gist of this. Lemme wait and see if Rob is going to allow this discussion to take place before I start posting links to comments, articles, etc.

Rob and I and staff have discussed and no, we're not having the discussion. It has nothing to do with the thread topic, it concerns religion, and it is a personal critique against the author, not his fiction, which is against the rules. Which is why 3rdI should not have brought it up in the first place.

Please return to the thread topic or find another conversation.
 
so......... I have been taking my time reading WMF, mainly because I don't want it to end, I am half way through and was wondering if anyone has any suggestion on what I should read next.

Have you tried any of the recommendation threads? Hard to suggest when we don't know what you've read... but I'd suggest Abercrombie. I'm on the final book of his trilogy, and loving it.
 
Definitely second the vote for Abercrombie - I'm currently reading Heroes and loving it!
 
Wouldn't Salvatore count. He's been knocking out books at a pretty good clip and has been very successful or do folks consider him the next tier down after the two mentioned?

I can't put Martin in that category as he doesn't produce enough material at a quick enough pace to be put where the other two are - though the quality is better(IMO).

I think he'd be on a 'lower tier' because a lot of his work is franchised material, like the two who write most of the Dragonlance stuff (I forgot their names!), so it's not entirely original fiction - No slight meant to Mr Salvatore, of course.
 
Whilst Salvatore writes in the Forgotten Realms setting (but not exclusively), his characters, situations, plots and most of the locations are of his own creation, so that shouldn't count against him.

The reason he hasn't been brought up is that by various counts he's already up there - having sold a lot more books than Goodkind but not as many as Jordan - and, having predated both Jordan and Goodkind's signature series, he's a longer-published writer who doesn't fulfil the same criteria. He's already established and already has a massive fanbase. He isn't the 'next big thing' in the way that Rothfuss and Sanderson could be described.
 
Well, back on the first page of this topic I noted Sanderson, Rothfuss, and Butcher were the best selling new authors in the field. Butcher has finished his epic fantasy series, which was netting 100,000+ in hardcover sales in the first year of release, so he's out of the running now. Rothfuss is big...really big. I'm actually expecting sales numbers for WMF to be at Goodkind levels. The big question is if Rothfuss is going to keep writing in his world after wrapping his trilogy. The closer he stays to Kvothe and the Four Corners the better his sales number will be. Sanderson's Way of Kings made it to 7th on the NYT list, I expect to see the numbers go up quite a bit for the next book since the series will have time to build a fanbase eager for the next book. With Butcher out of the picture the 3rd best selling epic fantasy author is Brent Weeks.

I don't think Dresden Files will ever be at the Goodkind/Jordan level. He's had 10 years and more books to build an impressive fan base but currently the Dresden Files is pretty flat in year to year growth. Were not going to see any massive increase in sales. Charlaine Harris and Jim Butcher were selling about the same back in 2007 (Kim Harrison was about the same level as well), but then True Blood started on HBO during 2008 and Harris has seen a massive increase in sales. It isn't close anymore. Harris also outsells Martin and Jordan.

I'm not sure Brent Weeks would be number 3. Harris definitely leads if it's all adult fantasy, not just alt world fantasy. If it's just alt world fantasy, then it gets trickier, but clearly Sanderson and Rothfuss are in the running.

Out and out untrue. Each Dresden book has reached higher and higher rankings on the NY Times bestseller list. I guarantee the next one Ghost Story will debut as the #1 book, as did Changes.

As did Turn Coat. According to Publishers' Weekly in there first year of release White Knight sold 115,000 copies, Small Favor sold 124,00, and Turn Coat sold 115,000. Looks pretty flat to me. Kim Harrison is selling more and growing faster.

On the subject of being #1, Patricia Briggs hit number 1 last year with Silverborne but only managed to hit #3 this year with River Marked. I don't think it's necessarily that she's losing fans, she's just not as big as Rothfuss and Picoult who released books the same week as her. Ghost Story will probably sell as well as the previous Dresden books (probably better even), but being #1 is dependent on not having a bigger name around.
