What games are you playing?

Attila Total War.

Last Roman is particularly good campaign when playing as Roman expedition. The original Attila is overburdened with political and especially economical complexity. In Last Roman you focus on battles only at least for a while. I started to lose interest in Creative Assembly in the past years because they put too much effort into creating global map and trying to compete with Paradox strategies in terms of details and scale while battle map mechanics are not improving. Still same old AI bugs and stupidity with crazy handicap.

Probably it will be the last Total War game I play.

Bought the railroad building game Mishinky off Steam this morning, after having watched a number of Let's Play episodes of it at YouTube. I enjoy this sort of game, and have been a train fan for as far back as I can remember. Am having a lot of fun with so far, despite it being an alpha build with a number of promised features not yet implemented. My one complaint with the world map I generated is that it holds very few cities. No biggie. I'll know to bump that option up a notch or two next time round.

Back to Fallout 4 the game for me has been revitalized by the amazing work that has been done with mods esp in the settlement controls and settler AI it makes it another game... I have also been watching the Youtube channel of Oxhorn and his FalloutVR stream videos... I am not yet ready to spend the bucks for a VR supercomputer desktop and VR goggles and controllers but it is fun to watch the folks playing at he bleeding edge of this new gaming tech

I took advantage of a Black Friday sale and picked up Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kawami for $15. Started Yakuza 0 last night, a lot of cut scenes but an enjoyable story so far.

Looking forward to Far Cry 5 coming out at the end of March, should be a return to form after the disappointing Far Cry Primal.

I uploaded my second Mashinky first-person engine cab perspective railway excursion video overnight. It can be found here:

Mashinky Scenic Excursions Ep 02 - Southern Border Railway three town journey

As stated, I'm not as happy with it as I was with first Mashinky upload. Too, the YouTube posting seems a little "soft focused" compared to its source. Don't remember that being the case with Ep 01. Not sure what's up with that.

I've a third excursion "filmed" and partially voiced. Don't intend to upload it, assuming its completion, until sometime next week.

I had the feeling I wouldn't like it but I went ahead and bought a copy anyway because I thought there must be something to it being on every games-of-the-year so far list - Shadow of the Colossus. Marvelous graphics and scenery and sound FX but a depressingly boring slaughter/climb/ride quest with nothing really going on, and the worst random-swivelly-round camera I've encountered since Super Mario World (which was a far far better game!) I did the first 'colossi' (as the temple folk erroneously call it), felt bad for killing a massive creature that had been unwittingly dragged into my character's selfish mourning, rode around a bit and looked at some other locations - where presumably the other creatures appear as necessary, although it was weird that they weren't around when I visited - and decided I'd had enough. Stupid and highly disappointing :(

Shadow of the Colossus.

I was skeptical about the whole idea of remaking Shadow of Colossus for PS4. It is a great game for its time and platform. It looks and feels wonderful on PS2. And for 2005 it was a milestone in videogames. But re-releasing it today with better graphics and high fps is like colored version of Casablanca. Feels wrong, pointless and stupid.

I never played the original, but I'm sure it was quite something back in its day. I probably would have enjoyed it when I was younger, but not these days. From the first minutes, seeing that ridiculously long thin bridge he rides over at the beginning and thinking 'that wouldn't stand up', I was worried. And the way his gf's body magically sticks to the horse as if she's glued there. Details like that, or a lack of them, tend to annoy me.... I agree that remakes of computer games somehow don't tend to work, not if there's a significant time gap between them anyway.

Original managed to create illusion that Colossuses were indeed giants. It was partly due to low framerate and resolution. Of course remake lacks this essential element. It was the same with Silent Hill re-release where they removed the fog. In most cases technical limitations of consoles and ingenuity of developers are the main reasons why some games are brilliant.

Yes, there's often a benefit to working with less power and resources. Early home computer games like Jet Set Willy were so creative and brilliant precisely because of the limitations, I think. Or maybe it's just cause those were the games I played as a child!

It is definitely not because you played them as a child. I can guarantee this. In yearly 90’s I owned ZX Spectrum, NES, IBM x486 in a very short span of 2-3 years. After the collapse of USSR we had all those videogame consoles arriving at the same time. ZX Spectrum games were still my favorite because they were very deep and all attempted to give player new experience. NES in comparison was bland and uninspiring (but with better gameplay, of course). Same goes for PC. My all-time favorite games are from early 90’s. Because they were simply better than what we have now. Not because we were kids.

I've never played a Monster Hunter game before, but bought Monster Hunter World. Let me put it this way: I'm 140 hours in so far and I have no plans to stop anytime soon. They just nailed the whole repetitive grind so well. The first few hours were a learning curve and I had a list of annoyances about the game, but as I learned the macro game I quickly got used to the issues and began to enjoy the depth.

Started the official Skyrim VR rather than the VR-modded flat version, but I'm waiting until I can get some game mods installed before I go too far.

Trying out BoxVR as an alternative to Audioshield for a bit of exercise. It definitely gets my heart going faster, but not as much fun as it randomly decides I didn't hit things for no apparent reason.
