THEME: Counter Culture

WORD COUNT LIMIT: 7500-40000
DEADLINE: December 31st, 2018
READING & VOTING DEADLINE: Jan 15, 2019

If you are new to the contests, here's a general outline of what to do:

1) Think of a story idea that includes speculative fiction elements (fantasy, science fiction, horror elements) and fits the theme stated above
2) Write the story
3) Edit the story to the best of your ability
4) Post story in the Stories sub-forum using this format: July-Dec Novelette/Novella Contest Entry: Title of Story.
5) Come back here and let us know that you posted your story and provide a link to that story.
6) Read the other entries and offer constructive comments aimed at helping the writer improve their chances of getting the story published. Let them know what worked for you, as a reader, and what didn’t.
7) Vote when the voting poll goes up

The winner takes over the next contest and has the honor of picking its theme.

CONTEST GUIDELINES:

PG-13 - generally, the forum restricts its contents to what would be acceptable at the PG-13 rating. However, we are lenient for creative purposes in the writing forum. Please warn readers if your story contains adult situations.

Once you post your contest entry, we discourage writers from altering the original text submitted. While it may be okay to change a few typos here and there, please do not revise your piece substantially. If you would like to respond to feedback, you are encouraged to post your revision within the thread (but not the original post).

Please refrain from voting for your own story.

Ooh! I am basically a counter culture all by myself. Autobiography incoming.. or something more intriguing.
I have tried a few times before but I still haven't been able to produce a full story for this contest.

A month in and I still don't have an original idea. I'm starting to get a bit twitchy about my ability to finish on time if I don't hurry up and get started so....I'm going to play with an old micro flash.

I'm gonna try pre-plotting my entire story before I start writing this go around, the way I've heard some writers do.

which will mean working from prompt cards... the cards I've been making will all be numbered and have the plot points on cards marked as, for instance, #1 and collected images on a supplementary card also marked #1 and as many other cards as necessary with additional ideas with research also marked as #1 until I have all the plot covered.

It'll be an experiment to see if I can write something closer to a first draft. that feels looser and not as overwritten/ over-edited as some of my previous efforts have been.

Wow! Worth a try! Some people work best that way. It didn't work for me when I tried it, I'm just more a SOP writer I think.

yep... well... almost everything's worth trying once.

I probably won't try jumping an erupting volcano on a bobsled that's getting pulled by squirrels any time soon, though.

I've been studying Jack Gilbert and his approach to 'courageous' poetry.... I probably won't follow his physical example ... living in poverty around the world .... but perhaps mentally. :D

you could find another poet who suffers for his art by belting himself with a stingray tail whip -- and ignore his example completely while you're at it.

Well you could just ask politely, Luka. It is Sticky-d to the end of the year.
Thanks Kat... I was sure I saw you write somewhere in the forum that you wouldn't be handling this kind of stuff anymore.

I didn't handle it regularly with the contests; Nila did. But Nila is not as available, so if there is something needed, contact me, Facing or Hobbit.

OK... I'm not going to be able to enter this contest this time around. I've had too many distractions happening almost from day one and the demands on my time don't look like slowing down at any foreseeable time over the coming years.
I will be able to set up the voting thread if there are at least two entries and if there is only one the next contest's handling will be handed over to the winner. But, due to low participation rates generally since the contest's inception, if there are no entries I will simply retire the contest.
Thanks to everyone who has participated. It's been a fun few years.
Take care.
