Yesterday, I watched Dracula A.D. 1972. I expected this to be terrible from what I had read, but I thought it was pretty good. I liked seeing Dracula and Van Helsing (kind of) being in more modern times.

Watched Dracula AD 1972 not too long ago. Fun. Once again Peter Cushing rises to any occasion! He's the best thing about the film IMO...

Always class. :) If I remember right, Christopher Lee was NOT happy about this one... and only agreed to it in order to work with his friend Peter.... although I'm sure 'contractual obligations' may have also been a persuader!
 
Tonight - Les Hommes Libres - a 2011 French film a fictionalised recreation of the part Muslims played in the French Resistance and how the Mosque in Paris protected Jews by issuing certificates stating they were Muslims. A chunk of history I knew nothing about. And another piece of queer history that was new to me too.

ALWAYS class. Watch him in Corruption to see "Best Actor in a piece of crap". At no point does he stop doing the job he was hired for...

Watched The Aviator (2004).

Last watched about 2000, I think. Nearly 2 1/2 hours long!

I had forgotten how good this movie about Howard Hughes was. Love movies about old Hollywood, and this looks great. I had forgotten how many now-famous people are in this movie: Brent Spiner, Alan Alda, Kate Beckinsale, Alec Baldwin, Ian Holm, Jude Law....

Of course, how much is 'real' and how much is Hollywood is debatable... but I understand there was some research involved. The effects weren't too dated, either.

"ALWAYS"? Have you seen Starship Invasions?

Mr Lee like many of the cast get through the whole show without speaking a word on screen. They're aliens and they're telepathic see? So no lines to learn. One take... and move on. Wild lines recorded in a dustbin at the end of the day (script in hand) whacked over the top in editing. Zero-budget film making technique of sheer genius. Same technique used for the the humans in the show (who weren't telepathic) they were quite often shot from a long way away in very long takes, and could have been discussing football, what they had for lunch or the uselessness of their agents they were so far from the camera.

I thought we were talking Peter Cushing.... but then I haven't seen the BIGGLES movie..... :)
 
Ah! I gotta da wrong end of that stick! You're right, In that case forget the Biggles movie and go poke Incense for the Damned (aka Bloodsuckers) with something. I think that must be Mr Cushing's nadir. A total stinky mess of a film.

Ha yeah Starhsip Invasions is a goofy one. Lee has a tendency to smirk when he's in crap. Cushing never does. He's plays it straight till the closing credits. Watch Corruption, you'll see. Make you want to stand up and applaud!!
Never saw Bloodsuckers -Patrick Macnee! Gotta see...
 
Watched Interview with a Vampire again... not sure that Cruise manages comedy in this one, but it is a good, gloriously Gothic movie. And Kirsten Dunst is still scarily good for her age.
 
Tonight Daughter Number One and I had fun with Theatre of Blood. A 1973 film in which Vincent Price has a whale of a time as a ham Shakespearean actor bumping off - in true Shakespearean manner - all the critics he blamed for ruining his career ably aided by Diana Rigg in drag. It's a bonkers, camp hoot.

But yes. I had forgotten that there was a theatrical & a 'director's cut' of Gladiator. I saw it at the cinema, but have seen the Bluray more. Think it was the first DVD I bought in 2000.... Can't remember the differences between the two if I'm honest, apart from the obvious 'the Directors Cut is longer...'

One Ridley Scott IMO that is so much better in the Director's Cut is Kingdom of Heaven. Now Orlando Bloom is not the strongest lead ever, but the film improves 100% in the longer version.
