Last Movie You Watched - 2020

Saw Love and Monsters, which I heard compared to Zombieland before I saw it. I did not find it as funny or as charming as the original Zombieland, which I really liked. It was solidly ok and passed the time, but its a hard movie to imagine anyone getting too enthused about. Good to watch once its free but don't bother if spending the $5 to rent it is going to annoy you if it doesn't measure up.

I haven't seen Zombieland II yet ... looks a lot more forced than I, not sure I'll enjoy it at all, so waiting for it to be free.

Watched it and found it stylish but rather confused in the plot Dept. Nice film but not as good as the first film for me.
 
Am watching later today... but 2 & 1/2 hours! I am starting to think that the director being given free rein on this one may not be the best idea!!
 
OK - Wonder Woman 84 watched. Some good parts, but way, WAY too long. Could be better with tighter action scenes (many of which were too long) and a lot of unnecessary exposition removed. A nice cameo in the credits... but generally it is good rather than great.
 
Yes, I watched in 2 sessions as I also found it too long for that reason better suitable to home video release... in the old days when presenting a long film Like with Lawrence of Arabia they gave you an intermission to attend to personal needs.
 
Saw Midnight Sky, a netflix movie, tonight. Its a suficiently simple premise that the sci-fi is just the backdrop; its a slow burn character piece in space and the artic. Its pretty decent. I was a tad annoyed at a stupid man-vs-nature scene in the middle, but overall it does what it sets out to do. The plot is that an unspecified accident is a slow moving extinction event, and only a scientist in the artic is left and he is trying to contact an explorer spacecraft to turn around to the habitable world they surveyed. The problem with the movie is that sentence is basically the whole movie, with a lot of character stuff, some nice space imagery, a bit of man-vs-nature and man-vs-space. Its not a movie that aims for a home run, so of course it isn't one. But it might be a decent way to pass an evening.
 
Some of the reviews are saying that the movie version is nothing like the original book, Art, and the book is better. I did look at this one, but seems a bit too depressing for me at the moment, although the cast looks good and visually also good.

I started watching an old favourite the other day, but for the first time on Bluray, Windy: Ice Station Zebra (1968). On this version it has an Overture and an Intermission added into the Bluray: presumably at both times you could buy an icecream! I just needed the ladies with the ice-cream tray for the Cinematic experience...

Never read the book. Yes, movie is a bit depressing. Bigger issue is that there isn't much to the story. Its generally well done, with a few things that might annoy nitpickers. For example, the unspecified disaster is some kind of radiological accident that poisons the air and causes huge dust clouds visible from space. But in a graphic, they make it look like it has multiple and growing epicenters, just like a plague. Mostly, its just not terribly exciting and its few twists don't even deserve the name as they are predicable. A development with one of the characters turns out to be a predictable and kind of cheap ploy. But the visuals look good and the acting is good. The MC gives his roll a certain gravitas that helps hold things together.

Cleopatra was another with overture and intermission also The ten Commandments and basically, the big tentpole films were done this way well into the 60s for any film that ran much over 2:30 hours. I can recall ladies with trays in the Cinerama three projectors system. In the NYÇ Cinerama theater as well as at Radio City Music Hall which still does live entertainment between the films. just like the vaudeville days. I can recall sneaking into the Boston vaudeville theatre at about age 12 in the late 50s to see the naked ladies :pand once you were past the guard on the door to backstage everyone thought you belonged there as a kid of one of the performers who had not got a sitter that day... it was very educational!o_O when I left I made sure the guard would remember me as ok to be there after that no problems seeing any of the acts from backstage and for free when I was playing hooky from school snd getting a much better education.
 
My ^ comparable experience was going to Soho in London and paying to get into a couple of strip clubs when I was about 14. I remember nodding or clapping for one entertainer in an almost vacant room so enthusiatically that she smiled that she stopped wriggling and asked me "Can I do anything for you dearie? I was so panicked that I vacated the place instantly. Not much education, but a lot of interest.

Also remember watching How The West Was Won, in a similar Boston 3 projector theatre to what Windy describes. A break and some sort of refreshments available. Saw Cleo a little later in London.

For Christmas, I watched the rather uplifting movie A Street Cat Named Bob, which was based on the best-selling non-fiction book by James Bowen. It really isn’t a Christmas movie, but since Christmas occurs during the movie I figured it was close enough. The movie tells the story of how Bob the cat comes to adopt a struggling addict, and provides him the encouragement to better himself and succeed. Heartwarming story, and it actually stars Bob the cat. James Bowen makes a cameo later in the movie. I found the movie on Kanopy where it was free to watch courtesy of my local library system.
 
Love Bob.... I watched A Christmas Gift from Bob on Christmas Day. As manipulative as hell, and not entirely true, but a really nice feel-good movie. Bob starred in this one as well, but sadly died earlier this year.

I watched Alien: Covenant. Pretty impressive I thought. Apart from the fact that the supposedly trained crew of the generation ship behave like kids at a theme park, running about and smoking when they arrive at the strange alien world, poking the native flora so it releases spores they can breathe in, etc. Fassbender was very good.

Exactly the reason why I hated it. :) Clumsy characterisation, unintelligent plot point. :(

Yes and it could have ruined a more visually uninspiring film but for me it was mainly about the ride. I thought the set designs were excellent, and the associated props like the sculptures and drawings. I'm not usually too taken in by computer animation but really enjoyed the space ship scenes. Not a patch on the first two original films of course (I should mention that Aliens is one of my favourite films of all time, though I would not consider myself a big fan of the 'franchise' as a whole)!
