TV Series or Show You're Watching

I've been watching From, it's been good so far, will be interesting to see how it plays out (hopefully they won't string it out too long).

"In a nightmarish town in middle America that traps everyone who enters, unwilling residents strive to stay alive and search for a way out, but they are plagued by the terrifying nocturnal creatures from the surrounding forest and secrets hidden in the town."

I'm five episodes into an eight episode mystery series titled, A Private Affair starring Aura Garrido and Jean Reno. According to Wikipedia, it's set in Galicia in the late 1940s. (The year I'd have guessed from the cars, if nothing else, but I wasn't sure about the city.) Marina (Garrido) is the daughter of the late chief of police, who raised her as though she might one day be a member of the police, though it's his son who has been named the new chief. Marina chaffs against the restrictions on and expectations of a young woman in that time and place (one of the funnier bits is a young reporter trying to interview her for a report on the city's most beautiful "spinsters).

Marina stumbles on the victim of a murder, learns the victim is one of several of the "Fleur de Lis Killer" and is off and running on her own investigation with the help of the family butler, Hector (Reno).

The show is on Prime now. A Spanish language production, it's dubbed (I think Reno is dubbing himself) and the voices seem to fit the characters/actors pretty well. Production values are very good, with some beautiful shots of the city and its surroundings, and nice use of location shooting. There's also some fun and funny dialog, a mystery that gets deeper and a good chemistry between Garrido and Reno, as well as between Garrido and Gorka Otxoa, who plays one of the detectives on the case.

For anyone who doesn't like nudity, there is a little in the first episode (not at all sexy, though), also in a painting or two that are involved in the plot in later episodes. While the violence is mostly off-stage, there is some violence on screen, often involving chases: I've noticed that the episodes usually end on something of a cliffhanger, making the show a bit of a "Perils of Pauline" series, but one in which the heroine is more likely to save herself than wait on a hero to do so. Anyone -- well, any adult -- who enjoys mysteries or who is impatiently awaiting the next Enola Holmes movie, might like this.

LOVE Jean Reno, but haven't seen this series. Thanks for the heads-up, Randy! :)

We finished Season 3 of Ted Lasso the other night, really feeling down about this one finishing, one of my favourite TV shows of all time. We also finished Succession over the weekend too. Just started watching the most recent season of Yellowstone.

Halfway through season 2 of the excellent German series, BARBARIANS, almost finished the terrific, A TOWN CALLED MALICE, and enthralled by GHOSTS OF BEIRUT.

Next up, latest YELLOWSTONE, 1923 and the new Japanese Netflix series, THE DAYS.

I finished Barry. I had resisted watching this for a long time even though I had been given several recs on it. Well, I loved it. The first 2 seasons were superb. Season 3 was pretty good, and season 4 was just ok. Recommended.

Alone started it's 10th season last week. I love this show. My wife...not so much :D.

Watching it on The History Channel via Sling.

Started on Season 6 of Black Mirror that's just come out - an excellent first episode!
Actually the whole series is one of the best I think - definitely darker than others and with less SF elements; I thought every episode was great apart from one of them which was OK.

Seven episodes into the first season of From on MGM+/Epix. Excellent so far. I expect they hired Harold Perrineau in part because he brings a bit of the atmosphere of Lost. It was inspired casting since the show has a similar set up: A group of people caught in a town they can't escape, facing nightmare monsters that attack at night. He's excellent, as is Eoin Bailey and, really, the entire cast. And I think they make a wise decision not to show the monsters too often. Kept off screen most of the time, their threat is more suspenseful.

About 5 episodes into the first season of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, a good series of hour long episodes that are mostly stand-alone investigations while also slowly gathering its major characters together and filling in some background on them. Good cast and production values. I started watching it because of Essie Davis, who I first saw in The Babadook and who strikes me as an extremely good actress. Her Phyrne Fisher is vastly different from the mother in The Babadook and she carries both off with aplomb. This is based on a series of novels and short stories by Kerry Greenwood. I read a collection of the latter, The Lady with the Gun Asks the Questions and they are clever and amusing in the vein of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories. Since access to the first season is a promotional ploy, I'll probably watch as much of it as I can in the time it's available, but not continue from there.

My 18 year old son recommended BoJack Horseman. Watched the first episode, and it seems to be a cartoon and more extreme version of Two and a Half Men. Circle of Life I guess -- I used to like Two and a Half Men a lot and now my son likes the cartoonified version with a horse-man as the main character.

I also watched Season 6 of Black Mirror. I thought it was excellent, too. I liked some of the episodes better than others, of course, but it was a strong season. I hope there will be more to come.

Watched the first two episodes of Sherlock. I've been looking for something relaxing to watch for a bit before going to bed.
The plots so far are well written The two stars do their jobs well and Lucy Liu specifically, is a joy to watch.
I doubt however that I will continue. The choice that the writers/producers made to portray Sherlock as a totally obnoxious s--t makes it less than enjoyable - and certainly not relaxing before bed. I assume that as it goes on they will moderate Sherlock's behavior somewhat, They already have slightly in episode #2. But I doubt that I will wait around for an improvement. There's so much out there - -

It sort of moderates, or becomes more understandable, and his relation to Watson evolves nicely.

Also, the one with Lucy Liu is Elementary.

Again, I request that posters mention their streaming or other access to programs that they describe. Even though many (most?) participants here are non-US it still would be appreciated.

edit: Thanks RM. There go those elderly brain cells again. Yes. Elementary.
Would you suggest jumping in at a later season after it moderates? Or would too much depend on earlier episodes?

If you're at all interested in how the relationship develops -- and it does so reasonably quickly -- I'd say stick with it. But then, I didn't find Johnny Lee Miller's interpretation of Holmes grating, and I was interested in how the reasons for his behavior were folded in over time. And it is one of the few Holmes/Watson pairings where the development of Watson is every bit as interesting as that of Holmes.

As you maybe can tell, I was a big fan of this series on its first run.

Sorry, pogo, I keep forgetting to include the platform. Black Mirror is on Netflix.

I just finished watching Solos on Amazon Prime, which is a seven part limited series. Each episode is approximately 30min. In length. Most of them involve a single actor or actress interacting with a person who isn't present, an AI, or themselves (in interesting ways). All have a strong science fictional component, but essentially they are character studies. Interesting show, worth watching.

Dissenting opinion -- most of y'all seem to be saying the whole season of Black Mirror is really good. I thought the episode Mazey Day was a total piece of crap, and not worth watching. IMDB ratings very much support my belief -- its a good season, but that episode is garbage. Well ok, it passed the time I guess. Its only after the episode that your realize the whole thing is pointless. So in that sense, its certainly not one of the worst things I've watched. But its just not put together in any sort of coherent way -- a call it a "Black Mirror-esq" element (to avoid spoilers) is just sort of glommed on to more convential plot. They dont really go together or have any sort of chemistry. Watch the rest, skip Mazey Day.

Yeah maybe I was biased as I like the actress Zazie Beetz, but also I liked the twist at the end (ie why Mazey was feeling unwell) which for me was unexpected.

For me the episode Beyond the Sea was the weakest; a bit boring and predictable.
