2012 Upcoming Releases-Fantasy & Horror

I'm not sure whether it will be out in 2012, but Lauren Beukes next book will be called the The Shining Girls and be about a South African occult crimes investigative unit. That's one I'll be interested in.

One more book that seems to be poised for a huge splash in 2012 is the debut The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker; this article in Guardian should show you why (hint $$$$$$$); just found yesterday about it and got just moments ago a review copy through Net Galley and on a quick glance I like the prose for sure. First some sf as January is the month of a bunch of huge sf releases, but I'll delve seriously into this in a few weeks.

Is it up to the hype? We'll see but keep an eye on it

I'm not gonna search this whole thread to see if this has already been posted -- the next Cal Leandros book by Rob Thurman will be published in March. Called Doubletake .

Under My Hat: Tales from the Cauldron. featuring the Harry Dresden short story “B Is for Bigfoot” now has a date of August 28th (previously it was estimated for October).

Mike Carey (of Felix Castor fame, as well as comic titles such as Lucifer and The Unwritten) has a new book coming that he collaborated on with his wife and daughter (Linda and Louise). That's due March 13th and is called The Steel Seraglio.

I saw Jon Sprunk's Shadow's Master mentioned already, but I did not see a date. That will be March 27th.

For all those Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman fans out there, Dragonships of Vindras (Book 3): Rage of the Dragon is scheduled for April 24th.

Meanwhile, Pat Rothfuss has said that he is "almost finished" with the novella that he's writing for Subterranean Press. In his words, "There’s no title yet. There’s no pub date yet. You can’t order it yet." So that is on the horizon and hopefully might be this year.

L.E. Modesitt, Jr. has the next Imager Portfolio book, Princeps, out this summer (11th of June) with the paperback for the previous book, Scholar, supposedly hitting in October.

Yes. Bit of an odd move by Tor.

It's an omnibus edition, Kazz.

Just a point of order, though: that list above is the Orbit US releases. Some of those are already out in the UK.

Hopefully that might avoid confusion!

There's been a few omnibii from Orbit lately: Pete William is keeping a very close eye on them!

See also:

The Legend of Eli Monpress by Rachel Aaron;
Trent Jamieson's The Business of Death;
and
Dante Valentine by Lilith Saintcrow.

Not to mention Mike's own Riyria series, of course!

That's a busy two month swing for Daniel Abraham. Can't wait for the Caliban's War, and i'm reading The Dragon's Path now and enjoying it. I'll be putting some money in Orbit's and Abraham's pockets in a few months.

Same. Abraham is a great author. Which is why the ending to Long Price burned me up. My expectations for this series, after having read the first, are up there. Although, this particular pattern has bitten me before (i.e. Long Price, Kingdom of Thorn and Bone).

What burnt you up, Peter?

I'm constantly amazed how Orbit can do multiple books in back to back months. There is a lot of ducks to keep in order to do this.

At just about the same time they were doing my 3-books in 3-months they were also doing 3-books in 3-months for Kristen Painter. I think there were more than a few "late nights." for the crew over there.

Actually, it involves a funny story. I was so burnt by the slant the ending took, that I wrote a fairly tough review of it (not at SFFWorld, elsewhere). I received a comment saying something to the effect of, "I'm sorry you didn't like it." There was more to the comment than that, but I just remember looking to see who had left it...it was Abraham. I don't know what it was, as I don't recall being gratuitously snarky, but I felt like I had kicked my friend's dog.

If you want, I can PM you a link to my review of it.

You mean this review? http://ubiquitous-absence.blogspot.com/2010/02/review-price-of-spring.html

That worked out much better in the author's favor than kcf's review of Kultus

Daniel Abraham has said in more than one place on teh intarwebs that the only response to leave on a negative review is the one he did. I've listened to couple of podcasts he's done and he comes across as very, very bright.

Michael, I think you've said much the same thing about commenting on reviews, if I'm not mistaken.

Back to the topic at hand, and one that should be right up your alley, Pete...DAW is issuing Jim Hines's Jig the Goblin novels in an omnibus over the summer. He's another recent author whose banged out quite a few books in a short time with whose work I need to catch-up.

Yeah, that was the one.

Whoa. I just went there to read that. I normally read all of Ken's reviews, so I'm suprised that I hadn't seen all those comments afterwards.

Agreed. His last book, from the new series, had me back on board instantly.

Ooooooh, shiny. I might have to consider getting myself that omnibus for Valentine's Day. After all, I love me some me (Owens, 2007).

I'd actually recommend getting the single editions (sorry, Peter!) 'cos the covers are much better, and they're pretty cool in their own right :D
