I actually don't mind the second cover at all and think it fits the book quite fine. When I get around to buying my hardcover copy, I definitely will be going for the second and be rather pleased. Last thing I want is repititious bordered vista with a sword or a gauntlet or something that wants you to know that, yes, this is fantasy. But it is polite fantasy. The first cover is dreck and really misses the mark not just in taste but in what tone the book takes overall. And aids the argument for polite covers which are boring and getting downright ulgy when every single new fantasy series seems to employ them.
