I am really pumped about several upcoming films. I can hardly wait for Van Helsing......the trailers have me panting for the real thing!
Then there's Troy, SpidermanII, Prisoner of Azkaban......a heck of a summer season starting early.

Which films do you think have the best shot at living up to their hype?

I saw an interesting analysis by Rick Norwood over af SFSite.com with predictions on what movies are likely to be like based on the scriptwriters. In the past, his analyses have been reasonably accurate.

His best bets (and I agree with most) include Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Harry Potter, Spiderman 2 and The Incredibles.

Of course, we'll all still go and see Troy and Van Helsing... but Van Helsing is written and directed by Stephen Sommers, of The Mummy fame. I wouldn't expect much more than that.

I'm not familiar with Sky Captain, what is that about and who is in it?

I sort of liked The Mummy....the first one definitely better than the second.

Sky Captain is a retro-SF movie set in the 1930s about a reporter who teams up with an intrepid pilot to combat an evil scientist who is kidnapping the world's scientists. Starring Angelina Jolie, Gwenyth Paltrow and Jude Law as Sky Captain.

It looks absolutely gorgeous: check out the trailer at www.skycaptain.com.

There sure is going to be a lot of movies coming out this summer that I'll have to go and see! Two that I must see are Troy and Prisoner of Azkaban. Also the Van Helsing movie sounds interesting, although I do not know the plot...

Hugh Jackman in long curly hair, in a long coat, with a crossbow.......what need have we of a plot? LOL

Just kidding, I am not that shallow. Van Helsing is based on the character in Stoker's dracula, the vampire's nemesis. I believe in the film, Van Helsing will be battling several varieties of monsters, with the aid of Kate Beckinsale, the dead sexy vamp from Underworld.

I guess I'm really waiting for King Arthur.

The trailer was excellent and made me want to see it immediately.

Clive Owen as Arthur is a great choice and I'm glad that the director and producer are going for a more "real" Arthur this time around. In their words, "more like Braveheart and Gladiator..."

The Chronicles of Riddick looks like great sci-fi!! I love David Twohy's films. (The Arrival, Pitch Black, Below).

Hugh Jackman....vampires....that does sound interesting! Yup! Yet another movie that I have to see.

Forgive my ignorance, but when is Star Wars Episode III out?

Also, any indication of when X-Men 3 will begin production?

The day after tomorrow looks good in a blockbuster sort of way.

Riddick looks stylish

I am scared but wait with interest for things like I, Robot and Dog Soldiers 2.

Also like crappy films like Resident Evil 2 and so on.

I hope the FarScape Movies happen and the Firefly movies are going to happen.

The Hobbit would be nice.

The Village sounds good.

Riddick does look good, and I am always anxious to see anything to do with Arthur.

Good question, when is Star Wars III due out?

Firefly is definitely a go. Star Wars III will be next spring, so essentially early next season.

As for I, Robot, I hereby pledge to avoid it like the plague. I saw the full trailer in the cinema and its a generic humans vs robots action movie.

TBH I am super-psyched about the release of "King Arthur"... I think it's going to be spectacular. LOTR really paved the way for fantasy films and I am indefinitely greatful to PJ. :)

They just announced that they are making a movie(s) about David Farland's Runelord seriers. The director is the guy who made The Art of War with Wesley Snipes and Michael Biehn.

I haven't read the books, but more fantasy on the big screen is always good for me.

Star Wars III will be out May 2005. There will be a preview in the DVDs of the original trilogy that comes out in September. Supposedly we will see the new suit of Darth Vader's armor.

Shan, I too am pumped for King Arthur. I think it's the release I most looking forward to this summer.

Bad news on one release, I'm afraid. Paramount Pictures has announced that it will delay the release of its upcoming SF movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to Sept. 17 from June 25.

Hobbit
So in other words I am not likely to see these movies(Aust) till I have grey hair :(

juzzza , great list of movies there that you're waiting for ! Dog Soldiers 2 , bring it on

I have missed any information on the new King Arthur film - Clive Owen is a brilliant actor though so I am sure it won't make my blood curl like 'excalibur' and 'camelot' and 'first knight' (which I didn't even watch) did. Shudder.

I've seen a fair bit of the hype for Van Helsing and although I am definitely in the phoawr camp for Hugh Jackman, I have to say Kate Beckinsale has the most annoying accent in it! So I don't think I shall bother with that. Plus the effects make it look a bit too fake.

Troy...well. Can't really ask for more can we?

Oh! And I understand that Firefly the movie starts production in June. That would blow any star wars film out of the water imo.

Troy: The only thing I can ask for is, that it opens sooner!! I can't wait even a week!

And the Firefly movie (it's called Serenity, I think) will not blow any Star Wars film out of the water. Firefly was weak, I thought.

And Attack of the Clones I suppose was a masterpiece in modern sci fi cinema? Sorry for the sarcasm Kanin. It is just that I feel that Firefly (the series and hopefully the film too) has a stellar crew and most importantly, an incredibly gifted scriptwriter. Which has not been evident in the last two Star Wars films as far as I can tell. I am not sure however, why I am comparing the two - and Firefly has not been made yet. I will keep my fingers crossed for BOTH films though, as old habits die hard, and I can't kick the habit of Star Wars.

Whedon has said that the general storyline for 'Serenity' (the working title, I think) is that two passengers aboard the ship provide problems... One may be the inidividual responsible for River's condition. Whedon says the movie will detail a "very tough two hours" in the crew's lives.

Interesting. I do hope they explain the chaplain's murky past in Serenity, he always reminded me of the Jon Shannow character in the David Gemmell books...not sure why, maybe the whole cowboy preacher thing!
