a little late

i thougt mabye for arutha you should do keauna reeves, i always pictured arutha looking kind of like keauna reeves when he played 'don jon' in 'much ado aobut nothing' terrible movie but none the less i think it's pretty close to what arutha would look like

jsut an opinion

Errr... Im probably going to offend a small measure of people here, but here goes.
I would like to see a movie made, as long as its made well(as im sure many here would agree). But the people you are thinking of casting for parts are... no good whatsoever for this film. That is a generalised statement... some of them may be good in the parts allocated to them. But i really do not want to see half of them in this film at all - you want this film to be original? Then get new mostly unheard of actors, drama schools would be good, but why not, as is done for theater shows, have auditions for the parts? Obviously not completely open auditions but take a selection of actors who have some experience behind them. This would leave you with a fresh cast of whom very few will be associated with other films, and so their characters will be much more potent and untainted.
These are just a few thoughts of mine, many people may disagree, but i do some amateur dramatics work, and ive seen a fair few people i would class as having that special something - even at older ages, and would class some of them as better actors than those in films. Remember it requires more skill to put on a good show than to record seperate scenes for a film.
As for parts of the book that are most important... I'll get my copy of magician and make some notes of things that cannot be got rid of, as there are little scenes that i forget in detail, but are important to the story of the film

Good idea - new actors would be the best for a film (if only there was to be one), as experienced actors would be too recognisable and seem out of place for the roles they'd be playing. Famous actors may draw in more people to see the films, but they'd almost certainly ruin the experience for a lot of fans, as they're too entrenched in our minds as certain roles.

Ironically, this is one of the few popular fantasy series that doesn't seem like its going to be made into a film in the near future.

Yeah!!!!!!!
Stereotypes :p
Ah, No I'm being serious. Edthebestest speaks sense.
As for Magician not being one of those fantasy books being made into a film, bah humbug
It makes so much sense. I mean after Tolkien and Jordan Feist is the most popular fantasy writer. It just makes perfect financial sense. I suppose all the magic of the Great Ones might turn prospective producers off. :(
We should lobby all the big movie companies. New Line, Fox, the lot. Bribe them, bully them, whatever it takes. :p
Yeah!!!!!!!

producers must have personal lives!

I was just thinkin about what Warlord said about producers being put off. Surely there must be some producers/ screenwriters / directors out there who have been known to dable with Feistuss Maximuss! Look at Pete jacko, he admitted himself it was a life's dream to able to direct LotR, and then to Bosh Kong straight afterwards! and lets be honest, Kong's cashpot must have been completely insane! And as far as scaring producers off Bruckheimer built a massive Cuban mansion for the sole purpose of blowing it to bits for Bad Boys II, at the time i think it was he most expensive single effect ever staged! So i reckon some production company should get off their backsides and step up to the plate! In a way it's a no lose situation, even if it bombs, there's a strong enough fanbase to go and watch it for kicks! Look how well Harry Potter's doing with an pretty shoddy film, not to mention Narnia (well let's not get carried away eh?) I hereby dare someone to make Magician the motion Picture, in fact i double dare you, with knobs on!

just jumpin in here

hey, i just got done rereading the entire series over again and i have to say i would be rather disapointed if a movie was made out of it! it's a good idea and i can gaurentee that i would deffinately go see it, but there's just soooo much that would be pale in comparison to the writen version! if a movie was made, i agree with the fact that fresh, unseen faces for the characters would definately be the best move!

I agree with the unknown actors statement, but to attract fans who have never read feist you must have a couple of well known names. Having just small actors would mean the film would only attract us feist fans. for example if we did have russel crowe as meecham, that would attract his fans and there is a hell of a lot of them. valid point though. if pug was played by a big actor I would have to bash some kneecaps... also if we seen a well known guy in there it would give it a little bit of the "cool" factor!.... maybe....

Whilst what you say could be true in some cases, it is not always that way...
Take Star wars IV - I believe all of the actors from that were relatively unknown at the time of filming, but it was the movie itself that made it such a hit with people, and i think it was a pretty cool film :p
I'm sure there are a few others that were made in a similar sort of way. But I do take your point, most of the movies from books often have one or two actors that are known in them. The only characters I would be willing to sacrifice to a known actor would probably be Borric... and maybe Carline. Other than that I think the rest would be better as unknowns.
Just my opinion

your absolutely right, but I think we could give small parts to the big actors (good actors/ actresses) and give the big parts to the smaller actor/actresses. Ignoring the big guns would be a mistake. Lord of the rings pulled this method off perfectly.

i totally agree...
new faces on big parts gives us the flavor that it would lack if we had big names there instead...

A Magician film would be very cool. With the success of The Lord of the Rings, surely someone must be willing to make another fantasy epic!

film

Yeah, i have to agree.
Me and a couple of others i know, as well as others i've been in contact with but don't know too well are trying to produce scripts.
We're all inn the business, but to tell the truth you're not liable to hear about many efforts because when people suggest it they get slapped down quite quick.
For example i work in the media. Have done mostly work in my home country and work as a teacher and researcher to keep up income. Now i registered to this site through the school i teach media at and i got insulted, called some immature student and was told to catch myself on when i suggested ideas for casting of another film (like we all do for fun) but because i said i was working on a script in my spare time i was accused of being dishonest and promising things that i shouldn't have.
The others i know from american, canada, germany and austrialia are independant workers who have taken on jobs in dependant companies to keep from being broke. Yet they have met with the same ambush as others and accusations that feist will not allow films to be made.
To straighten this out feist has said that he doesn't want to be involved with a film (and rightly so - would you want to be part of something were people sat down and over the process of weeks ripped apart something you'd work on for years?)
Secondly he is involved with work pertaining to a "Fairie Tale" film but he has only signed over the rights not become fully a part of the creative team.

Insults, slander and accusations have bothered many over the course of time and while i cant understand everyones want not to be deluded, few know exactly how the film-making process works. Some thought that companies and directors were only hired to do work and never tried to start it themselves - if this were true there would be much fewer productions today including the lord of the rings.
People must understand that many i know have tried to reach out and gain enthusiasim for a subject that is more than a little hard to work on and more than a little depressing (when you feel you could be working for nothing). Reaching out has cause more than a few to abandon the idea and this puts any hopes of ever seeing a motion picture on the back-burner (if not the trash compacter).
So give support to those who do offer up hope, if not for those others i would have thown out the idea and there have been more than a few who came to this business with little experience but and amazing idea (i know, i've seen one or two myself). Don't get unbelieveably excited that will only lead to depression, but do give support to those who don't just talk, they try. After all, if you want to read a bio once or twice - feist was a D&D gamer until he did what many said they'd do but didn't deliver = he wrote one hell of an adventure.

still not too fond of the idea, too much would have to be butchered (or cut all together) to make it short enough...
not to happy bout that fact, but i would deffinatly go see it!

katala

hi katala.
I know what you mean. One is simply not enough. It would have to be at least two. Unfortunately you'd be looking then at siverthorn in one movie and sethanon in two. if you wanted to do the set. Personally i'm concentrating on trying to make a two part script. And i would want as much character development in it as possible. So i've taken to looking at ways to emphasize pieces of info that are told to us in the text in acting or speaking. But it takes alot of thought cause i hate the type of film where the characters explain things to each other. You know:
"hand me the quantum signifier" "What?" "the machine that crushes space time and allows us to take this space ship into hyperspace".
I hate stuff like that. People in scifi or fantasy worlds would have grown up knowing about these things, and not need explaination. So i'm having to find inventive ideas that do this, including ones that are fair to the audiences understanding that 'its another world, maybe its not important that we know what that instument is.'
There's also the passage of time. In films it has to go quicker to start than the book does. And you can't just stop a film and say "six years later."
Most of these kinks i've worked out in the last six months of trying. so there's hope but i can't really mention that here because of copyright and the fact that there are others on this forum who are trying and its not fair to colour other peoples work with your ideas cause then its not just they're work.
But the minute i get it finished i'll take care of the rest of the legal stuff (as i have with my first half) and then i'll post it on the web and let you know. But it'll probably be a few more months at least, for me anyway.
I hate writing long messages but they seem to be my only type. but like i've said because i've had to pick up the pace and i'm only working for this one novel project i want as much character development as possible. There are things that you might not get about characters in magician that you get overall and i'd like to explore some of them.
But until they're finished we cannot look into any other part of the film. Other than to research certain costs of course. (*shadowcraft says while biting his nails*). LOL
Hope i've answered some stuff for you. I'm a big fan of the series and see the potential but don't want to do a D&D movie or david lynches Dune "if you know what i mean". I wanna stay as true and possible and make it as cool as possible.

Are you seriously getting into this magician script stuff? Hope you make lots of money! (and a good film or ill do your kneecaps in).

Encouragement is always a plus...
But like i said, i'm not the only one trying. There are yet to be talks with the writer and even if there had been things are still a long way off.
I know its something i want to do.
Most of us, though, are trying to see if it can be made to work on a film basis first.
Fingers crossed.
Anyway back to the cast discussions. What does anyone think about Gary Oldman as Guy de Bas-Tyra?
And i always felt meechan was black. Am i the only one?

yes(nodding knowingly)

:D
ah, I always though of him as like one of the gondor rangers in the lotr film but I dunno i tend to forget peoples descriptions quite readily.
Oh and having your kneecaps done in is pretty sore-i have experience of it-It all swells up like a balloon and.....
never mind

I always thought of meecham as just a rugged old white guy.... gary oldman is a perfect casting decision for guy though.

By the way, was swordsmaster Fannon black? I think it was somewhere in magician.
