Feist's "Magician"...film??

maverikk said:
Do you mean "the black prince of wales" or the bad guy?
the former is james Purefoy... awesome actor, although i think he had a beard at birth i've never seen him able to get that 5 o clock shadow removed... so as a young'un it would be tough especially when the oldest he needs to get is 25... but he could work out to be a good Arutha?!? he is good at sulking and brooding

I thought the black prince of wales would be great as pug, but he'd be even better as arutha i guess, with a fat wig...hehehe

hey, rob b, i at no point said you give abuse here, nor did i say exclusively about anyone. I said he was running the risk with lots of different people.
And what we're doing is only for the fact that many have labeled this book unscriptable, so we're trying. You don't wanna pay all that money and realise that you've got no chance of managing it.
Plus i haven't posted or given a site where you can look up the work i'm doing. Once you go public with a draft or give it up for public consumption, then you're liable for copyright theft.
You're not the only forum i've been on, but i do think you're one of the best, that's why i'm still here. But you do get abuse on forums for mentioning attempts like this. You know what i mean, people don't wanna be decieved and i can respect that, as i said before: i'm only trying to script in my spare time and am not (as of yet) making a film. I've never said otherwise but have gotten abuse for so called "promising things i'm not really gonna deliver".
It not fun when your trying and i know people who have given up and may have been the ones to actually get it to the next level. All i'm doing is telling him to guard himself or he could get disheartened.
You can't fault me for helping and if you look, i've never mentioned that "Everyone here is abusive" and you can take it however you want but you can't give me hassle (or warnings) for something that i haven't said.
If what i type and what you read are two different things then you can't blame me for that.
Hey. if you want me to openly say how much i like this forum i will. But don't hassle me for something i didn't do.
And if i do insult this site, i'll be the first to put my hands up and say: "Fair enough, that was overboard. I apologise."

There was a knock on... scrum down...

Rob... Shadowcraft...
Both of you are right... and things said in text are far easier to take out fo context etc. (how many arguments have i had with the mrs because of a missunderstood text message)

So before we begin dealing more blows lets assume we are ALL up to speed with legal/copyright issues.

I know what you mean about the abuse in certain forums shadowcraftand sympathise ... and as you've said the LACK OF ABUSE is the reason for your sticking with this site!

Rob, i think everyone who is writing/thinking about writing will appreciate the points you've made as warning before they get themselves in trouble!

BOSH... Lets all get back to the fun of speculation (without any need for a group hug or anything of the sort)

Donald Sutherland as Kulgan... oh yes, he's awesome!

I am interested tho... what accents do you think should be attributed to the certain regions of Midkemia! i.e. BasTira = French (i assume) Kesh = Africa, True Bloods = Ancient Egyptian style?

Will this have issues on the casting of roles?

There was no need for that unprovoked attack on shadowcraft. You said hes outlining the fact that some people here are abusive. Theres no need to get angry. There are abusive people here, like the fact that you were just abusive to him.

the supports welcome guys. And thanks.
But maverickk's right, though i kind of enjoy group hugs and all.
I had never thought of the accents angle other than kelewan and midkemia differences.
Its a good point.
Guy is a french name - which i found out after calling him guy in the english sense for so long. So i guess you could attribute that.
I think the best way (less confusing) is slight differences between regions but big ones like kesh should be different. I always saw them as turkish - you know - desert area is what i always pictured kesh - like the turkish (turks) side in kingdom of heaven.
But i'd love an excuse in input your black dude from gladiator and the island as a character suggestion. I think he's a great actor.
But medkemia doesn't have huge separated cultures, like the real world: Indian, african, english, american, native america, chinese. These things only develop in different culture and enviroments: Like kelewan buildings based on chinese and japanese buildings - designed for easy building if there is an earthquake (paper walls -inside- and the like.)
so i'd expect there not to be too much diiference in accent.
GTG.
Cheers.

I always imagined these regions as representations of our nations as follows (obviously some do not appear in magician, but are introduced later):

Rodez - spanish / mexican

BasTira - France

Kesh = various nations of Africa

Keshian Truebloods = Ancient Egyptian

Keshian Confederacy - Oriental
(in particular - Isalani = China)

Yabon - Scottish

Deep Taunton/ Mallow Haven = Irish - they have their own language i.e. Gaelic (i could claim Welsh as it is also celtic, but i'm not that naive and it really seemed more like irish, also Feist will not have heard much welsh living in CA)

I always imagined the majority of the kingdom to talk british english which i suppose is a stereotypical fantasy opinion to hold.

I also saw Krondor as London, mainly because Jimmy the hand reminded me of the Artfull Dodger from Oliver Twist.

And Rillanon reminded me of a renaissence Italy, Florence for example, because of all the marble!

Queg i saw as a shakesperian Cyprus because of its marine isolation, but decked out like the Greece of Gladiator.

There is more, but i'd best let y'all have a go too!!!

And no, Pug as far as i could tell you are spot on... Kulgan definately ate all the pies
(i alwas pictured him as a shabby santa!) :)

SHADOWCRAFT, it was late when I saw the post and perhaps I was feeling the wrong tone from your post. If so, sorry.

I don't think I was abusive towards him at all. SHADOWCRAFT can easily stick up for himself. As maverikk so diplomatically pointed out, both SHADOWCRAFT and I had good points, so we really don't need you to add fuel to the fire.

you guys are more childish than primary school kids, just get the hell over it

I'd have to agree with yabon being scottish, i think he even mentins that the yabon armies wear kilts in rage of a demon king.
as for rodez i figured that they were the italians and that rillanon was venice, with like isolation and beauty.
would crydee be sort of like the irish country? that's how i imagined it
and i agree with maverick, krondor reminds me of oliver twist too

Thanks for saying rob b and if i've taken your warning as more a threat than advice i apologise.
Its nice to have support though, so i know i'm not just taking everything wrong as both pug and maverick explained how we both acted. I think we all need to think talwin's way too and not get so charged up immediately so we cna stay friends and not have these big apologetic conversations.
I'm glad this forum can be as close nit as it is and we can get over things like this so quick.
So apologies and thanks again.

Also (with the culture differences) i suppose that's probably what feist imagined when he created his worlds, i mean when you're doing that many you have to have some sort of basic plate to work on from.
I was very into comic art and book cover art as well as fantasy games when i was younger (not by much cause i still take in much of them for ideas - have to keep the creative imagery pumping) But i tend to take smaller pieces of places in history or real life (cause we all have some main imagery we work from) and i try to make it look fantasy like if you've ever seen places in the final fantasy games all look different so i try to take in as much imagery and muck them together. So i like to think i saw a general fantasy place when reading the books. I've never really thought of all the areas like that, though its a cool thought indeed and probably how it was supposed to be taken in. I just always see slight differences but that's just me. Yours is more interesting, more variety, maverikk.

Im back from wherever I was

Hey guys, hey Shadowcraft

You guys sound like you've made some progress, sorry if I haven't had access to a computer i've been on a very long holiday and where I was didn't have a computer.

nice to see you back arutha, was worried you'd left the forum.
Any thoughts on casting or our new vocation: the nationalities, accents and/or dress of the different regions and lands of midkemia? God i sound camp when i read this text.

I'd like to point out to Jimmy and any members old and new, that this forum is absolutely the place to discuss your love (or loathing for that matter) of an author's work, and if you are writing a script based on a book or writing your own original script or writing your own novel we encourage you to share with other members details of your projects.

We do not however, like members to mislead other members and just for clarification, this is the thread SHADOWCRAFT is referencing when he suggests that this forum has slapped him down or tried to discourage members in any way from discussing their projects.

As a moderator here, my warning stands. We will not tolerate members misleading other members.

The reference of Rob b is well appreciated. Its good to know this info so that i'm not wasting my time. I've been to crydee before but had only seen this sort of ref in interviews never something of this standard. I've got others who need to know this too, including jimmy the hand. Weird, there's strange almost physical weight from my shoulders. Its a pity though, would have like to see it made one way or another.

As for juzza. I don't mind people reading that forum, you seem to think its some ace against me. So i'll play devils advocate and imagine for a mo that you're not following me around the forums. But i'll take whatever punch you feel you need to throw at me, to satisfy whatever need you have to attack me. The members can clearly see you coming at me at an angle from square one.

Hey if you'd prefer me off the forum, normal people just ask. And i've never once claimed anything the wasn't true nor have i claimed anything against this site. If you'll look the reference was to people in general.

So say whatever you want to say to me. I'll read it whenever i get the time.
And it'll be good to know what the members think about it anyway.

P.S. Many sincere thanks to rob b for information that will save me and others time and frustration and no doubt a depressive spell when we would have found the info out much later.
I hope jimmy the hand drops in soon to see this info.
And again thanks.

Supporters rant!

Legally speaking... R.E.F. is talking about people setting their own stories in Midkemia, and or using his own characters in another setting e.g. a spin off involving Jimmy the hand on a stag-night in paris! He does not mention anything to do with screen/stage adaptations and the like. Untill you begin talk money and or publicity and or (as Whichever moderator pointed out) the process of production. In other words, as long as it's your own personal brain child, there is nothing wrong with what you're doing! The main Issues Feist has with fan fiction is that it messes with what he does as his job, writing is his bread and butter. But if anyone here thinks that feist would say no to a potential successful screen adaptation of his work I would strongly dissagree with them!
His main issue is time. He's too busy with other projects (eg. books which he knows will sell and make him money) to gamble a lot on what could lose him a lot of money without the correct backing! Tarrantino only got where he is today because Harvey Keitel liked the script of reservoir dogs, and basically funded the movie himself... yes perhaps a one in a million chance, but it happened for him!
SHADOWCRAFT... don't stop working on your screenplay unless you yourself are sure feist would not be happy with it... if that's the case you were onto a loser anyway. But if you think it's good, go for it same for anyone else! The book is far too old now for a studio to take interest in it on its own like WB did with Harry Potter... it took a group of crazy Kiwi's to bring LOTR back to life and took them a good portion of my life to prepare and make it, they themselves still admitt that every day felt like it would never actually happen, "the job was just far too big!" When you've finished it and are happy with it... that's the time to start worrying about copyright issues, hopefully by that time you'll be sitting on what could be the next fantasy epic since LOTR and by that time (years down the line) Feist could have finished his final book based in midkemia (apparently darkwar is the end - according to wikipedia).
Feist can probably account for a small part of my imagination by now having read (as far as i can tell) all but a few of his works. I say Good luck to anyone trying to bring that part of their or my imagination to life, and if it's good i think he will agree!

And if not speculation is still awesome!

(OFF TOPIC: if i sound quite uptight, i'm sorry, i'm not attacking anyone or anything but the SIX NATIONS is back on tommorow and sunday and with the drama here in wales at the moment tension is high for any rugby player/fan)

Not quite SHADOWCRAFT. I don't think it's an ace against you at all, I just want to make sure members have a context for your earlier claims in this thread that you have been slapped down for attempting to write a script. In that thread, you were asked to elaborate on your initial post... you avoided answering a number of times and only when challenged and since (in this thread) have you been honest about your project. You went from running a production company working on scripts for two very popular books, casting the likes of Christian Bale and Patrick Stewart... to working on a script as a fan of the book.

Nothing wrong with the latter scenario at all.

You entered the forums claiming to be spinning PR for your project amongst fans again, casting thespian giants for your script. Only recently have your casting posts been 'just for fun'.

I can assure you I am not following you personally around the boards, I follow everyone around the boards... that's my job.

I too, SHADOWCRAFT, am transparent about the angle I came at you in that thread... and that's as a cynical fan of genre fiction, when someone new comes onto a forum, claiming to run a production company working on big budget adaptations of popular books. Admittedly, most of the claims are hinted at but when asked a number of times by members and myself, you avoided the questions, instead challenging members' knowledge of the production process and independent film.

It's not your aspirations that trouble me, or your projects... it's the way you have presented them and the way you continue to defend your initial presentation, instead taking the position of the righteous indie film maker being stalked by the big bad moderator.

I'm all for indie film makers, and I personally love it when a script is written by the guy in the video store rather than the pro writer... I love it when authors and actors fall in love with a script and fund it and act in it themselves. When Jackson got the greenlight for LOTR, I was completely blown away and was more blown away by the results.

If I've got it all wrong, SHADOWCRAFT, I apologize with my whole heart... clearly we have a misunderstanding, however, whether you like it or not, your posts in this thread suggest to new members that you were shot down for being passionate about a project close to your own heart. Not true at all. You were called out, your claims challenged and you decided to try and talk you way around the straight answers.

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss it further and every member here is free to PM too, if you want me to expand upon my position.

Juzz

Actually on the subject of film rights for Magician, it has been the source of speculation and rumour that New Line Cinema has them at present. So everything on this thread is a bit of moot point.

Bare with the length...

The only rights i've heard of them having are the ones to "fairie tale".
And whether moot or not its still fun.

Juzza, its nice to know i'm not a target per-say. but i feel there must have been a misunderstanding. In my opinion (flawed or not) i opened a thread to say what i'd been doing on waylander because of noise that had been made on another forum about the impossibility of my work on a magician script so i latched onto another work i had started a while before. Its harder to pay the bills and work in the line i want to work in so i'm in my current job to keep me going but its doing my head in because i keep having to come back to the same type of "just to get the bills paid" job. So writing these scripts keeps me going creatively when i've nothing else to do.

Shadowcraft is my production company. Its what is stuck down to any piece of work i've been involved with for the last year. It was something else entirely before that and before that i either just used my name or was only involved in a low position. I have different people who come in and help me with projects and the production company name is simply because its something i'm proud of and its simply easier to remember a company logo than a person in this business.

Finally i never said i was hiring people like patrick stewart, i actualy said that if and when i managed to turn this from script to screen i like these actors...
Now i see that it was heat of the moment excitement. But i was quite adamant about saying that i wasn't doing a film just trying to get something started. And when asked about myself and what i had done my reply wasn't exact enough, people wanted to look up programmes and and docs to be sure that i wasn't spoofing. I can understand that now. But the barrage of those type of messages felt like an attack and in saying that i was only involved in regional work and i tried to back this up by saying that other directors had started out small - but things just got way out of hand from then on. What am i meant to say except: i've done these regional tv programmes or these regional documentaries - it was the other forum all over again and i'd no doubt get told that i didn't cut it because i wasn't international, by people who had never met me or seen my ability, people who probably weren't even in the business.

I once spent three years on a doc that i had brainstormed, pitched and was now directing but over time my funders got jittery about its subject matter and the doc all of a sudden went from 1 hour - 1/2 hour - 10 minutes. I had worked my ass of for a year in prep because teams kept pulling out of the process and in the end i had to grab a few dependables from the people i knew and finish it. But now all they wanted was ten minutes and it was all they were willing to accept. And that got me angry to no end. I was even involved with a beginning TV series and after us getting to the first few days of shooting we were cancelled, the execs decided they didn't want it anymore. My career, short as it is, is littered with situations like that, and from my experience that's normal. But my talent in what i do has never been in question though and has gotten me more jobs than my resume. And i wasn't interested in having people criticise me because; a documentary might have caused controversy and was now wittled down into something a teenager with a camera might produce.

This business is what i do, and it has taken up more of my time than i would have liked it or it should have, and if i've lashed out because of that i'm sorry.

Looking back on this entry i see that its kind of a rant. So i apologise. And i also apologise if i've unknowlingly mislead anyone. I seem to be the master of misunderstandings lately. Something i'm gonna have to work on.
To clarify to others though, i'm a fan, i'm in the film and tv business but as of right now a script is as far as anything is going. If in the future that changes - great! But anyway i hope this clears things up and clears the preverbial waters between me and juzza, so that we can all go back to our original insanities on this thread.

P.S. nothing in this thread is meant as an insult so please do not take any of it as such.

Man this is a long message.

maybe i'm dense or i missed something or both, but are you still gonna continue writing the script? it's good fun and as long as you don't start getting on a pay roll from feists work there's noting wrong with it is there??
