I'm an in-betweener. Liked some aspects of his early work, don't like his later stuff. I have a similar opinion of several other authors.
 
I'd call myself a 'tweener too. He used to be way up there on my list of favorites, but a combination of his books beginning to wander and me discovering some authors who are just better has pushed SoT down into the "okay" catagory.
 
I don't love Goodkind and I don't hate him. I enjoy his books cept for the fact I thought the Jennsen book was very painful to read. Also it seemed to me the Emperor suddenly became a simple minded idiot.:confused: Have not read NE yet.
 
i haven't read Goodkind, are they worth the effort?
and what's the first book I should read?

Every one here who knows me, also would know that in my opinion you should go for it. I admit that some of his later books are not as good as the first, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't eager to both purchase and read them.

They are a little gory, so if that bothers you then they might not be the right thing for you at the time, but in my opinion thye are generally GOOD stories. Also, each book in itself is a complete novel, and the series only swings on background themes so if you really wanna finish after one book, you can because goodkind delivers closure on each book. :)

The SoT novels certainly aren't the best out there, nor are they the worst. The plot is stale and poorly executed, though some of the secondary characters are pretty good. For the first five books, Richard and Kahlan are actually pretty decent characters. Unfortunately, in the last three books, Goodkind sees fit to sacrifice character development and plot for philosophy.
 
Two things -

A) Philosophy and political dogma isn't exactly something I'm looking for in a fantasy novel.
B) It's also a bad thing when character development and plot is sacrificed for philosophy.
 
You when reading the books I never noticed the philosophy. I know it's htere now but at the time it didn't poke me in the eye like it seems to have with a lot of you.
 
Same here Caldazar, I didn't realy notice it. Except for maybe around the time Richard figures out a new wizards rule. :)
 
Nope, I've just finished Naked Empire, and I'm not saying that it wasn't there. But it didn't really stick out to me, or distract me from the story. Maybe I just enjoy it too much to be turned off by it. I've read entire books of pure philosphy afterall... :cool:
 
I agree with Goodkind's philosophy, but I'm disappointed that he's let it destroy his character development and plot.
 
Ah, I see! That cleared up exactly what I was wondering. You know, you may be right. I think that I'm just so use to the characters that I almost know what there thinking even when Goodkind doesn't bother to say it...
 
Well, I borrowed the first book some days ago and I have only read a few pages but so far it has been OK :)
 
Wizards first rule, like most of his books, for the most part dives right into action. I love that. He wastes no time introducing characters and getting things rolling. I hate it when you have to read over chapters of garbage before hitting anything remorely plot like.
 
Hey thanks, I enjoyed reading that. It helped to clear up some things I had heard people jabber about, but was unsure of. :)
 
Oh! I hate swedish books! Why do they have to divide every book into 2 books ore more!

About Wizards first rule: So far I liked it and the charachters. How many books has he written? And what are they called?
