Both astonishingly good series in their own right, and available at outstanding prices.

Firefly is an iconic show and spawned what some of us regard as the greatest SF movie ever made. 'Nuff said, there, really.

Battlestar Galactica, however, is also a tremendously exciting series and one which has already enjoyed immense cross-genre success. Its lavish visuals and moody soundtrack has sucked in many of my family members who would not ordinarily watch SF. My dad in particular watched the space battle sequences purely from an aesthetic point of view.

When it comes to stand-out episodes in series 1, I will mention the oustanding opening show "33", which contains some fine acting and a very realistic evocation of what its like to go through five days with practically no sleep or rest. Also "Bastille day", which has a surprisingly charismatic Richard Hatch playing a prisoner of conscience / terrorist who attempts to hold the fleet to ransom. This is a good episode more thanks to Hatch than to any tight plotting. In fact, the ending is something of a cop-out.

Finally bought the Ultraviolet DVD (with the 6 episodes not the new crappy looking film that looks incredibly similar to Aeon Flux starring Milla Jovovich). Excellent piece of SF. A vampire show nothing like Buffy. The vampires (ok code 5s) feel actually sinister and subversive. They've got people in high places - money, power, access to advanced science which they aren't afraid to wield as a weapon. Oh the good guys are evil in their own ways too. Thought provoking stuff

I remember that series being shown on Channel 4. The writer was known for his work with Cracker, if I remember right, and has since gone on to the new Doctor Who. The lead actor,Jack Davenport, was in Pirates of the Caribbean as well as the BBC series This Life.

When did Space Above and Beyond come out on DVD? Been looking for that one....


Oh and back to topic: bought Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the WereRabbit today. Cracking!

I have now ordered a copy of Space. Be interesting to watch it again. My brother, who usually likes the programmes I watch, really didn't like it when it was first shown, but (with the odd gung-ho moment aside) I didn't think it was that bad.

I have the suspicion that all that CG work may have dated horribly, but I guess I'll have to see. Kirsten Cloke hopefully hasn't!

I have now ordered a copy of Space. Be interesting to watch it again. My brother, who usually likes the programmes I watch, really didn't like it when it was first shown, but (with the odd gung-ho moment aside) I didn't think it was that bad.

I thought it was a good show with a number of very memorable episodes. My experience with this show was perhaps similar to yours -people who would forgive any number of problems on other SF shows, found the problems unacceptable on this show.
For example, characters not expressly following orders for dramatic purposes,is something that happens in just about every SF or military show that we've ever seen, but for some reason on this one, it was the deal breaker. Even though it's probably some of the best miltary SF ever committed to either the big or small screen, and even though they had been fans of shows that shared the same shortcomings. Go figure.

My experience is, people, and in particular men, come to miltary dramas of any kind, with very specific, often idiosyncratic requirements, and if they are not met, they will not watch. And I'm not talking about people who are in the service.That I could understand.

My father was like this about westerns. He couldn't watch the spaghetti westerns;he would go "That doesn't look like Dakota" and that would be the end.

My copy of Space hasn't arrived yet, but my copies of Serenity and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence have.

Both brilliant, but for different reasons. GITS2 is just stunning, and with the English soundtrack on the Region 2 releases is just amazing. (Not to mention brain numbing!) As for Serenity, well, it's a Joss Wheedon script and very very good, with some genuine surprises along the way.

I've been meaning to find out - how did "Wallace and Gromit" fare over in the states? I thought it might be a touch too... "english" maybe? One of those films that would slip under the radar.

Last film I bought was Dead Man's Shoes - an awesome film set in Ireland about a soldier going to look after his bullied disabled brother. Brilliant - and highly recommended.

Also, does anyone know if they are EVER gonna release Bladerunner!?!??!?
