Welcome back. You are one of the OG users I remember from back in the day when I first joined. I'm hoping to see Mugwump back here one day too :)

This will be my 20th year here - my longest membership on any forum - and it's still a great place to come.
 
Hello, I am Ira K. Wright. I wrote two science fiction books last year and am very excited to get the next steps under way. I have researched and consulted with a writers group on what those next steps should be and find myself growing ever more lost.

I’ve noticed that many authors seem to build a following first, creating a brand around themselves and then releasing books that attract readers who are already fans. It’s a model I don’t fit — I have tons of content but very few connections, and I tend to stay away from social media. Still, I have a series I’m passionate about, and the ideas just keep pouring out every time I sit down to write. It's like I have a muse or something.

I truly believe my concept has the potential to bring something fresh to the science fiction world and give it the shot in the arm it so sorely needs. My series is innovative, exciting, and different. And while my writing style has been described as “Good,” I find myself constantly hitting roadblocks. Every time I think I’ve found a solution, I discover even more challenges ahead.

I’ve been advised that building a presence in the community is key to success, but I often feel like I’m not doing it right/ its too late/ no one will listen. At first, I dismissed writing groups and online interactions as unimportant, but after engaging with a fantastic writers' group, I’ve seen how invaluable they can be. So, I’m here hoping for more insight… though, to be honest, I’m not even sure what questions to ask.

If anyone has experience navigating the publishing process or if there's a kind soul out there willing to mentor, I’d be incredibly grateful. I’m aware it’s a big ask, but I’m truly passionate about my work and would love any advice or support you can offer.
 
Hi, I am a new Sci-Fantasy author. I wrote a novel about characters surviving the AI apocalypse and using technology to live self reliantly in balance with nature. I put a twist on the classic star crossed lover: machine cross entangled. The characters face a solar storm as the electromagnetic pulses threaten their brain implants. I am working on promoting artists through the book covers and am open to alpha and beta readers. The story also doubles as a memory mnemonic on computer science but it's hidden inside the story so non-programmers can enjoy. I am talking to IEEE and organizations about sponsoring my novel on their newsletters and distributions. If you know anyone, let me know.

Welcome Ira! We do have some writers around here both professional and aspiring. I myself am not one of them however. Check out the Writing Forum and maybe there are those who can help.
 
Hey, SFFworld, long time no see. Just wanted to check in and announce I'm still alive, and still doin' my thing.

That's not to say my world hasn't shifted a great deal. I've had a grandchild, left my religion and become an atheist, and in so doing went from leaning right to being a far left socialist. I discovered I am on the spectrum and have been dealing with untreated clinical anxiety most of my life.

And this past year, I was finally able to be honest with myself and come out as trans. I have become a much less angry person since realizing I am a woman. So much of my self-loathing and confidence issues stemmed from not really knowing who I was, and now that I know myself, and have learned to love her, I'm able to let go of so much and have a much brighter outlook on life, even in the face of all that is happening in the world.

I also managed to get a novella published. It was a small, independent press and it's a horror story, not fantasy, but it was a paid gig, so it counts. It was published as part of an anthology called Symphony of the Damned and is currently available on Amazon. The collection came out before I did, so my old name, J. Miles Parker, is the credited writer. You can find it here, if you're interested. Since then I've been trying to work on myself before I work more on writing, though I've never entirely given it up. But I was quite a mess, so there's a lot to work on, and not all of it is mental.

Because of my years of self-loathing, I let myself go pretty substantially. My health is in shambles right now and I am taking steps to improve that by actually seeking the medical help I need. I will be starting hormone treatments soon, as well, helping to mitigate my gender dysphoria and attain more of the womanly outer shape that will affirm my proper gender identity. I am less concerned these days with whether I make it as a writer than that I just live the best life as the best me I can be.

Anyway, I don't know if I'll be doing a lot more posting here from this point on, though I certainly may.
 
Wow. That's some pretty big, life-changing changes you've made there, Takoren! Good to see you back, though, even if it is only for a little while. Hope the health improves soon, but it sounds like you've made a start on a better life for you.

Those are HUGE life changes, @Takoren! Congratulations on discovering, finding and meeting your true self, in all these ways.
 
Thanks @Hobbit and @RedMage! It’s funny what happens when certain events cause you to realize you were holding on to some stances, views, beliefs and self-image not because you yourself hold them but because from a very young age, others held them for you and spent your life convincing you that they know you best.

As an old broad who recently started hormone replacement.... understand going in this can be a wild ride both emotionally and physically. It's a bit like being 13 all over again without any of the fun bits. Try to be patient with the process. I'm not sure what it will be like for you but I was a good three months before I started to feel stable.

Yeah, I have definitely been told that, and my wife has realized what she’s in for as our daughter reaches that age naturally and I’m about to start the treatment! She’s like “oh, no, two of you at once!” Yes, I’m still married to the same woman; we have both acknowledged we’re pan for a few years now.
 
Well I'm Eric, and I am a writer of mainly military science fiction, so that's out of the way I just like things scifi (not just writing it, I do like the genre) and like to get to know people, and learn things as well. I found this site by accident, actually looking for keywords for my book and I happened upon this site, and figured it was cool enough to join, so here I am. I've been in the military so I have that slant for my books and so on, but I like to hobnob with people too, so yeah nice to be here.

Welcome! SFF World is different in that it has a number of both aspiring and seasoned writers who participate in the forums.
