Hi I'm AR,

 <cough>

Anyways, I have always loved fantasy, dont mind a bit of SF or horror and hates Harry Potter. I am also partial to red wine, gravy, shellfish, soup, fresh bread (not all at one time) (on second thoughts, wtf....... all at the one time)

*goes off to find a baker, fisherman, off licence and cash mashine...*

;)

Y'know what... I've never entered my name onto this thread!!!! Doh!

Ok... Hello! I'm a newbie, cos I've only been on here nearly two years... and I haven't posted many times...

Solaar, I have missed your humor, dear, glad to see your return to our fold.

Apsalar Reborn, welcome........and BTW, what's wrong with having "red wine, gravy, shellfish, soup, fresh bread" all at the same time....sounds pretty delicious to me!!

Ah, thank you, My Dark Lady. May the sun never... er... shine in your... ahem... window?

Good to see you too, my dear. I've had a few false dawns trying to return here but now I'm back full time and on fire.

Mind you, SFF did shut me out last week for some unfathomable reason but Juzzza and Dag got me reinstated!!

Solaar
glad to be back

Before I say anything....

Is this the biggest thread in the forums? I mean 58 pages?!

Anyway...

I joined only a week or so ago and have been posting like crazy in nearly all areas (apart from horror - not my genre). I was very surprised to find threads on Games, which I wasn't expecting for a book site. In fact, I wasn't expecting there to be a form, full stop (or should I say 'Period'?). So, eh, yeah...
Nearly everyone here is incredibly well read (I say 'nearly' simply because I haven't had the chance to talk with every user. Well, not yet, but i'm working on it).

A bit about me? Lets see...
I'm roughly 5'11, 15 years old (youngest here? - I don't know, maybe). I've only recently started doing a lot of series reading (past few years). I'm into sci-fi and fantasy, like the majority of kids my age, however i'm already struggling for book space in my room.
My main interests aside from reading are playing guitar, art, gaming and football (not as much now though). I'm also interested in Philosophy and plan to take it at A-Level, which is a year away. I have 3 sisters (whether anyone cares is another matter entirely), and no brothers, which always kinda saddened me...

I speak english and french (english being dominant), but don't have any future plans that would require me knowing french. Oh well, it's what the schools teach you.

On a sad note, however, today is the last day of my holidays... which means tomorrow I go back to that place i'm sure you all loved - school. I am in a way excited as I will be told my recent exam results... for which I did no study... :( oh well, I best get an early night for the day ahead...

au revoir!

Greetings!

My name is Cher, I'm 32, and I'm a Montessori teacher. I was introduced to sci-fi and fantasy at the age of eight when my dad gave me a set of the first three Xanth novels for Christmas. Consequently, I thought Piers Anthony was the greatest author on the planet for the next four years. I wrote him a letter, and back then, he wrote me back. :) I read McCaffrey and other similar authors for a while, and then I moved on into other genres. I've made a return to fantasy in the last couple of years, and, as I've aged, my tastes have changed. I've particularly enjoyed Robin Hobb, Jacqueline Carey, Guy Gavriel Kay, and Phillip Pullman.

I tore through both Fitz trilogies recently, and I'm still experiencing the letdown. I found this site while trying to find something similar, and, admittedly, nothing is jumping out at me. Based on multiple recommendations here, I picked up Feist's Magician, and while it's a charming book, and I would have absolutely loved it at one point in my life, it's not quite as complex as I'd hoped.

I'm considering books by Keyes, Elliott, and Erikson, but I'm not sure where to turn. And, while you all may think I'm nuts, I've not read Martin. My husband (who loves him) has convinced me that I won't be able to deal with the violence. (I have a five-year-old son, and ever since he's been born, I don't tolerate well descriptions of violence to children). I struggled with the death wheels in Tigana, but I handled it okay. Is Martin considerably worse than that?

I like well-written first person narratives (and those disguised as third person), with a flawed but talented main character or hero (i.e., Fitz, Jocelyn) and complex character development. I am turned off by Tolkien rip-offs. Any thoughts?

Oh, and while I tend to be a lurker, I just want to thank everyone here for providing such a wealth of information. I love digging around on this site.

Cher

Hi Cher,

Well I've read martin, although a good while back, but the death wheels in Tigana have stuck in my mind as well as they were one of the most horrific concepts I have ever encountered. I'm guessing if you can cope with them you can cope with Martin - it would be a shame to miss out.

Erikson is my most favourite author so I have to say read him first it wont get much more complex. Elliots jaran books are an easy enjoyable read, and her Golden Key is one of my alltime favourites, I havent read any keyes.

Hope this helps

And a waving madly back at you, Madame Butterfly. I love Garth Nix and quite enjoyed Philip Pullman's Her Dark Materials. Ever read any C J Cherryh or C S Friedman?

Lol I don't think I qualify as a Madame but it made me smile :)
Have not read either, though I have heard of both. *rubbing hands gleefully* Where do I start??

Hi Cher. My friend's recently started on the Xanth novels (now on book 2), which came over as a shock to me, mainly because he is the kind of guy who never reads anything. Ever. They must clearly be good if he is reading them. :)

From what I can tell Cher you like a somewhat more lyrical romantic style to your fantasy reading. One might even say a tendency towards feminine and not masculine writing. If so I'd suggest avoiding Martin for awhile. Maybe Patricia McKillip, Lois McMaster Bujold, Mary Stewart, or Dave Duncan are some authors to consider instead.

Hello everybody. I'm also new here. I come from Slovenia, small Alpine country in Central Europe. I'm 27 and I'm just finishing my education in the field of marketing communications. I hope I will have a degree sometime by the end of the spring. I've become addicted to fantasy literature about three years ago, when I read A Game of Thrones by GRRM, who is still mine favourite author, followed by Robin Hobb, Raymond E. Feist, Guy Gavriel Kay, Steven Erikson, Jacqueline Carey and others.
Unfortunately, no one of my friends is interested in fantasy literature (well, there are exceptions, but really small ones), so the internet is the only place I can find people with the same interests. You know, when you have to talk with somebody, why, oh why, had to that character in that book to die :) or what will happen in the next book of your favourite series. Well, usual stuff we fans like to talk.
And I also hope I will improve the knowledge of English, which is not mine native language.

well, that's it for now
Snow

@cher: I also think, that Erikson is not, what are you looking for. If you liked Robbin Hobb (did you read The Liveship Traders), you could also try Jude Fisher: Sorcery Rising.

Greetings, Citizens

Hello, all. I'm Avi stetto, I guess that I could be called Avi for short.

To tell you about meself, I am a full-time college student, double majoring in music and mass communications. I also work at my college's library and at a Baltimore radio station (as an announcer in training). Additionally, I am the mascot for the local public library, which is a really fun job.

doggy6va.jpg

I'm the eldest of five children at age 21. I have three sisters (who are 20 years, 16 years , and ten months) and one brother (who is 2 years).

In my spare time, I like to watch old B-list films, read speculative fiction, play guitar, fantasy cartogrophy, and listen to online audio dramas.

I am hoping to be a free-lance musician (mostly on the church and wedding circuit) and a full-time disk jockey. My goal is to wind up in one of the top ten markets in the country, preferably Houston.

I have plans to write a fantasy trilogy, but that's on hold until I have more time from work. Instead, I am working on writing to pilot program for a fantasy audio drama series which will serve as a back history for the actual novel.

Well, that's about it for me!
