Hello everyone, this is my first evening here, so I suppose this is hi.

My name's wolf, I am 16, British, and am in the middle of my GCSE exams at this present date in time. I write, a lot, and have gained slight recognition (elsewhere) for doing it. My dad (Hobbit) also works in these forums, so that's good news.

I've seen a lot of SF, I'm not too big a fantasy person (with some exeptions, such as LOTR) and I'm just starting out with horror (Buffy and supernatural being favorites). My hobbies include anime, playing with my 40k and Inquisitor on a Wednesday gaming night, oh and gaming, especially Command N' Conquer, Universe at War (not released yet, should be out by christmas!:D ), StarCraft and...well, its impossible to name them all here.

Although theres more, ive probably taken up a lot of room already, so I'll stop for now.

*pray's its not gone in the wrong place*

LOL, Hobbit junior, a welcome to you and everyone preceeding.

Your mention of 40k jolted I sight I caught today of how it's been 30 years since the first white Dwarf, yikes, anyway what 40K Army do you collect? if you don't mind the question, I was a Tyranid Fanboy myself, though all that stopped when I was forced into spending money elsewhere, namely on books

:D

i've lost track...however, I do have a fairly large imperial guard army (working out exact points values makes my head spin!). I have some Tau, Eldar, Tyranids and a squad of Grey Knights. I also have a fair sized empire army that I need to paint at some point...

...Its all about finding the time.

thank you for taking a interest, BTW.

I guess I kind of missed this thread for awhile since I started out in the sci-fi forum and it took me awhile to explore some of the others. I started out reading science fiction as a kid, then slowly got shifted to fantasy since it seemed as though that had the most new titles. Of course Saturdays back then were a routine of going to the library with my dad, then off to Vic's for a hot fudge sunday with chocolate ice cream and no nuts, then to the park to watch soccer. & an armful of library books to read throughout the week. Maybe I'm misremembering but it always seemed that the grocery store had a good selection of sff back then, rather than the 8 slots today with about 1/2 of them being midway through a series (and of course never the first of a series). Anyway that was a while ago.

A few years back I took off reading (for pleasure) when I returned to school for a Master's degree (lots of reading for school). It kind of made me think I had gotten sidelined out of most science fiction over the years. So after I became free to read for fun again, I began looking at what all is out there in the science fiction realm and eventually found this website.

Some of my favorite authors in no particular order and not necessarily science fiction include:
Charles de Lint for a modern folklore style
David Gemmell
Greg Bear
Jack McDevitt
Amy Tan
Barbara Kingsolver
Ivan Doig
Sharon Kay Penman historical novels rather than the historical mystery series.
Anne McCaffrey especially the Pern series. I'll have to say that when I go back and reread them all the first few written were the best.

So I'm just looking to kick back here, get some ideas for new reads, maybe give a few ideas for new reads, talk about some of them, and check back to this post in a year or so to see if I've got some new favorites.

Howdy all!

Been lurking on and off for a bit but finally decided to chip in...

I'm a 47 father of two and been reading SF for 40 or so years.

Likes: Iain M banks, P K Dick, Fred Pohl, Sheckley, Farscape, Babylon 5, anything that takes me somewhere I've never been before and makes me think things I've never thought before.

Hates: Anything with ****ing dwarfs in, and elves, especially in combination heading west in a motley crew to destroy some ancient evil - and Star Trek. I loath all things Star Trek. It's anodyne corporate pap for the unthinking. (Apart from the the early part of the first series which I can enjoy in the same campy crap way I can enjoy the Adam west Batman). I also hate that moment when the books falls apart because the author lets his characters do something stupid or out of character just to keep the plot going, or makes them do something totally phisically stupid like crawl across a frictionless surface, or open an airlock door inwards when there is a vacuum on the other side. That sort of thing.

Apart from that I will try anything once - apart from sodomy and folk dancing. Though, given a choice...

Yes! I am not alone in my hatred for that show!

Welcome abord, JunkMonkey.

Hello to all. I suppose an intro of some sort is in order. I'm a 37 year old male and I've been reading and writing fantasy and science fiction since I was 9 years old. I work as an internet programmer for a living, as I have yet to break into the author business. I'm also a trained swordsman and teach classical renaissance rapier fighting in my spare time. I am married and have three children of varying ages and genders, so my spare time isn't particularly abundant, however. :)

That will do for a start. I look forward to participating in the lively discussions on these boards and getting to know the unique personalities that dwell here.

Greetings! My name is Takoren.

I am 29 years old, male, and I live in Canada. I have been married for seven years and have two children.

I have been reading Tolkien and Lewis since I was a boy. Over the years I have read much fantasy that I've probably forgotten, but since being married I have read The Dark Tower series (and lots more King as well), the Harry Potter series, Dune, the first four and 1/2 volumes of The Sword of Truth, all of The Wheel of Time, Gardens of the Moon from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, A Song of Ice & Fire, The Fionavar Tapestry, Tailchaser's Song, Memory, Sorrow & Thorn, the first two books of The Prince of Nothing, The Book of the New Sun and The Belgariad. Presently I am reading, for the first time, The Sword of Shannara, because I would like to know what's in it for myself.

My "to read" list includes The Skystone by Jack Whyte, Lord of the Silver Bow by David Gemmell, The Hyperion Cantos, the further books of the Dune series, the Rama series, the entire rest of Tad Williams' works and I'm sure there are others but I'm not at home right now and can't peruse my bookshelf.

I am currently hard at work on my first fantasy novel. I have never been published, and in fact this will be the first novel that I will have finished, which I plan on doing. I have tried to write before but a dirth of good ideas and a hectic home life got in the way. I am nearly 300 pages into this novel and my idea will at least take another 300 pages to complete (and this idea keeps growing as I write, so it may be even more). It is the first novel of what I hope will be a trilogy (though if the idea keeps growing it may be even more).

I currently work in tech support to pay the bills.

This board looks pretty cool, and destined to open me up to works I've never read or heard of before.

Hobbit

As always, thank you hobbit, and hello to the new guy!

Hello !!

Well, before all, I apologize for my English; I hope I will be understandable  , but you can correct me so as I will improve my English!
Some of you speak French?
Indeed I’m French and I spent only two weeks in England (last summer as a tourist).

I’m 20 years old and I live in France. I’m a student, and my dream is to be a publisher. During the holidays, I work in a bookshop :) .
My favourite fantasy authors are:
Tolkien of course, far ahead
David Eddings
Guy Gavriel Kay
Pierre Grimbert (French)
JK Rowling
And I’m sure I forgot some others…

I am writing a fantasy novel, but I don’t know if I will ever have time to finish it… anyway not before a long time :( .
