If you are new to the contests, here's a general outline of what to do:

1) Think of a story idea that includes speculative fiction elements (fantasy, science fiction, horror elements) and fits the theme stated above
2) Write the story
3) Edit the story to the best of your ability
4) Post story in the Stories sub-forum using this format: June-Nov Novelette/Novella Contest Entry: Title of Story.
5) Come back here and let us know that you posted your story and provide a link to that story.
6) Read the other entries and offer constructive comments aimed at helping the writer improve their chances of getting the story published. Let them know what worked for you, as a reader, and what didn’t.
7) Vote when the voting poll goes up

The winner takes over the next contest and has the honor of picking its theme.

CONTEST GUIDELINES:

PG-13 - generally, the forum restricts its contents to what would be acceptable at the PG-13 rating. However, we are lenient for creative purposes in the writing forum. Please warn readers if your story contains adult situations.

Once you post your contest entry, we discourage writers from altering the original text submitted. While it may be okay to change a few typos here and there, please do not revise your piece substantially. If you would like to respond to feedback, you are encouraged to post your revision within the thread (but not the original post).

Please refrain from voting for your own story.
 
One great side effect I've found from doing all the writing and the researching for these SFF contests is that I've gotten a lot better at focussing on things generally... I'm training to be a volunteer with the St John Ambulance Service which is a lot of work and reading and I think would probably have been beyond me until recently...

But I think it's like they say... "the harder you try at something the better you get at everything."

it's an old brand of typewriter.

It was a bit obscure, I should have gone with Remington ... but I figured no-one would know any typewriter manufacturers anyway... and Wiedmer at least starts with a W like "whip" -- as in whip cracking
 
How's everyone doing. I haven't had time to look at this since requesting the sticky. I dimly recall staring something so went in search of the file. That I found it was heartening. That it is only 340 words is not. Onward!
 
I'm at 10521 words so far, but I always seem to find the last month is where I panic about the deadline and do most of my writing -- and when I find plot elements that seem to appear out of thin air like magic...

Plus listening to corny motivational songs never hurts, like
 
If anyone has any questions or issues they'd like help with prior to the deadline don't be too terrified to present them to other writers here... chances are some of us may have encountered similar roadblocks and may have found ways to get passed them... or if you're just torn between two great options...

It's not about writing by committee (which may work for screenplays occasionally tho less so for prose fiction) but it sometimes helps to tap resources.
 
I doubled my word count today! This brings me to just over 800 words.:oops:

But I think I've got most of the story sorted in my head. I'll type more out tomorrow but first...cookies because...cookies.:D
