July/August 2016 Short Story Contest

I have a story that may fit here but I've misplaced the text. I can put up a link to the narrated version if that's not too bizarre?

You mean an audio version?
Doesn't really work for me, but whatever the contest czar deems appropriate.

Well, you could always put it up and if people aren't keen on the idea they can just not vote for it; but your best bet would be to scribble up something original to put up, as I think that's really the point in these contests and I believe that's what most folks here do. That way you can get feedback and it makes the whole process more interactive and community based.

What does everyone else think?

We do encourage everyone to write new stories for the contests. The goal for many is to get published and the contests provide a fun way to add to our body of work and get feedback. If your story is already published, that puts you at a strong advantage as most of us are still working towards that. If you have a audio story of an unpublished story and would like feedback on it before submitting it somewhere, we do have a workshop thread. I don't think anyone has ever put up such a story format before but you'd probably get some takers. I'd be willing to give it a listen just for the novelty. :)

Slight change of subject, but has anyone had any luck with the previous contest's entries? I foolishly sent mine to Clarkesworld but it was hastily rejected; will try somewhere a little more low-key next :D

Welcome to the rejection club. (check out the write one sub one thread).

I have had a few of my Microfictions published at Microfiction Monday Magazine. :)

One of my entries from last year is at market number 11, currently, and a revised version of my Mar/Apr story is out at market number 4....

I wouldn't listen to an audio story either. I'm just not that into audio. Sorry.

I am writing a story for this. It's about a boy who inherited the ability to read people's minds from his father. The trick is, though, the ability is only active when the humidity is high (i.e. during storms) and it is accompanied by splitting migraines (inspired by my husband's own struggle with air pressure induced migraines :( ). Anyway, his father was murdered and left the images of his murder seared into his son's brain so that one day the boy could be the vehicle to avenge him. Which the boy does, but it might kill the kid in the process. That's sort of the story right now.

I've found that if I ever reveal that much about a story I intend to write, I can never write it.

My writing buddy is like that. For the past 7 years, he has emailed me excellent story ideas about once a month, sometimes more. He never writes them. Like you, once it is out of his system, it's done.

I'm an outliner. I outline everything. Sometimes all the way down to the scene (like @RedMage), but more often all I do is an overall story arc and then a scene list and go from there. But before I write a story, I definitely have to have an end point in mind that I want my characters to arrive at. If I don't have that end point, it turns into the NEVER ENDING STORY.

I assume you know about John Irving, he says he writes his novels backwards from the final line, the final scene....chapter by chapter...

I really feel like I need to turn what meager writing energies I have to the anthology. Work has pretty much annihilated my creative drive these past couple months so no promises.
