Last movie you watched 2025

Saw Kraven the Hunter because . . . well I have Netflix . . . and needed something to do. Turns out that is not a good enough reason. Its not epic-level bad though, and did more or less pass the time so maybe the IMDB rating of 5.4 is a smidge harsh. But you'd have to really love the genre and be a bit forgiving to to actually like it.

Night of the Eagle , tightly paced and wonderfully shot . A professor begins to suspect his wife is dabbling in black magic as both their lives begin to unravel .
Night of the Eagle (1962) known as Burn, Witch, Burn in the U.S. showcases a high level of writing skill. The film is based on Conjure Wife (1943) by Fritz Leiber and the screenplay was written by two of my favorite authors, Charles Beaumont and Richard Matheson. It and the 1957 movie Night of the Demon (U.S. title: Curse of the Demon) are high on my list of British horror films.

I recently watched the 2017 Russian Science Fiction film Attraction. Of course I had to watch an English dubbed version on the Tubi Streaming Service as I do not speak Russian. It’s an interesting film that involves an alien spaceship that inadvertently gets damaged by Russian air defenses, and subsequently crashes in Moscow. Our story follows a Russian General, and more importantly his daughter, who become involved in the subsequent events.

The CGI special effects involving the ship and alien technology are quite decent. The decision to make the “aliens” look completely human is less comprehensible from a scientific standpoint, but it allows the romantic subplot to progress. In the end the story reminds me of The Day the Earth Stood Still in some ways.

I thought it was a pretty good movie, not too deep, but watchable. Lots of action sequences for those that appreciate those. It will be of relief to pet people that the dog does not die, in fact he might just live forever!

Interstellar.
Due to it being the film's tenth anniversary it has been getting a lot of buzz. I heard two NPR treatments plus a written piece each of which extolled its creativity and science, I saw it soon after it came out and it was the consensus of the people I talked with at the SF Marathon (where I saw it) that the plot threads were tangled and difficult to follow and the science, presented as a major theme, was at best not believable even as extrapolation.
Due to the hype my spouse was intrigued so we watched it again. Great acting however the rest of my earlier opinion held. Spouse also had a negative reaction. I won't go on as I am sure that most people here have seen it and my opinions are not going to change yours.
Still, even after ten years, a disappointment.

I saw it at the cinema pogo, and loved it up to the point where
it was announced that love is the fourth dimension
which, being the cynical oldster that I am, totally killed the film for me.

But... great soundtrack! :)

I'm similar - really liked it with reservations; the spoiler didn't kill it, just made it a bit of a let down compared to what I was expecting. And the big positive was most of the science was based on current physicist's thinking.

Today, I watched Restore Point, a really rather good move which is described by Wikipedia as a “Czech cyberpunk sci-fi thriller film.” This 2023 picture features a female detective, who is investigating a murder. In the world of 2041, a resurrection technology called “Restore Point” allows the restoration of anyone killed by unnatural means, so long as they have backed up their consciousness in the last 48 hours. It has become a right in Europe that anyone suffering an untimely death has the right to be restored.

The detective, Emma (Em) Trochinowska, is pursuing terrorist who are members of a group “River of Life” who oppose the use of Restore Point technology. She has a personal vendetta against this group, as they killed her husband after the period when his backup would have been viable.

There’s a lot to like about this film. The near future world is very believable in its portrayal. With the exception of the resurrection technique, the technology all seems logical for 2041. The plot is twisty and suspenseful, and kept me engaged throughout.

I don’t speak Czech, so I had to rely on the English subtitles, which were also cleverly imposed onto written materials in the film itself. I found this picture on the Kanopy streaming service courtesy of my local library

SISU ( d. Javari Helander ) PRIME UK .

An elite Finnish commando takes on the Nazis . This looked like it may have been a graphic novel adaptation , but it isn't . Great fun .

THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMENTER ( d . Andre Ovredal ) NETFLIX UK .

Based on a chapter from Stoker's Dracula when the Count commandeers a ship to take him from Transylvania to England . Despite the source material this was a missed opportunity . Instead of being drenched in gothic trappings it looked benign and " Hollywoodized " . Not enough was made of the paranoia and seige mentality aboard the ship . Perhaps it could have looked to Carpenter's The Thing for inspiration . Pity , it should have been much better considering the cast and budget .

SCREAM BLOODY MURDER ( d. Marc B. Ray ) TPTV - UK free to air channel .

Following a spell in a psychiatric unit for killing his father a young man goes on a murderous rampage . An early b movie slasher which has weird psychedelic flourishes, a large degree of unpredictability and some interesting stuff going on . For those who like this genre , recommended . Would love to see 88 films release this on " bells and whistles " blu !

Armageddon ( d. Michael Bay )

With the commentary . Several participants not contributing at the same time . Michael Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer don't exactly do themselves any favours , coming over as arrogant and condescending . Meanwhile , Ben Affluent enjoys taking the proverbial esp. recalling the time Bay told him to F off when he asked about oil rig workers versus astronauts !

CARRY ON CLEO

One of the funniest Carry ons .

Watched Black Bag, the latest from director Stephen Sodenbergh - an excellent spy drama film, and Fassbender's still in top form (the other actors were all great too).

I really liked this, a sort've new version of "How the West Was Won". It looks great (stunning landscapes) and at 2hrs & 53 mins (Part 1 of 4) quite immersive. It's not the best film ever, but it's certainly not the disaster some of the reviews or the box office takings would suggest.

April Fool's Day (1986) dir. Fred Walton; starring Deborah Foreman, Griffin O'Neal, Clayton Rohner (seen on Shudder)

From the height of the slasher era, this plays as a variation on Agatha Christie: Muffy (Foreman) invites several college friends to her island home for the holiday. A nasty accident happens to one of the ferrymen as the last ferry for the day gets them to the island, but once he's safely taken to the mainland, the beauty of the location calms them all. And then their hostess starts playing pranks on them, much to their amusement.

Then the deaths start happening.

Well-directed and less gory than most, this proceeds at a good pace, with a twist in its tail that, for me, works. All young performers, at least three of them have had lengthy careers, including Rohner (last seen by me in I, Madman), Foreman (Valley Girl), and Thomas F. Wilson (Biff in the Back to the Future movies). Recommended for a good Friday or Saturday night thriller.

ONE DARK NIGHT ( d. Tom McKoughlin )
A student spends a night in a mausoleum to gain entry to a sorority girls club .

Reasonable entertainment with some nice special effects . An effectively stunning opening scene which may have driven the narrative but instead perhaps ultimately hindered .
Adam West has a small supporting role .

THE VAMPIRES NIGHT ORGY ( d. Leon Klimonovsky )

A bus breaks down in a small village populated with vampires.

A slice of sleazy exploitation Euro trash . Poor acting , badly dubbed and at times unintentionally funny . Also a bizarre soundtrack full off jazzy , lounge lizard muzak which didn't match the footage and ramped up my laughter ratio !

I actually thought this was ideal for one helluva rubbishing from @JunkMonkey ! ?
