May 2015 Motivation Thread

I am old school. I prefer physical copies. I hand write all of my first drafts.
I couldn't do that. My penmanship has gotten so bad I'm not sure I'd be able to accurately transcribe what I wrote. This is what motivated me to getting a tablet and a purse it fits in.

Progress is not word count. Progress is asking yourself if your characters moved from the spot they were yesterday, and they answer "Yes!"

I just had one grab me by the collar while in the shower, couldn't even stop to grab breakfast, just grabbed my journal and wrote. I love it when that happens!

P.S. but I hate getting my journal all wet like that! :D

P.P.S -- in regards to writing, I too tend to prefer writing the story (or at least sketch of the story) in my journal, on paper with pen. My imagination and creativity seems to flow better that way and the bonus is that I get to do an initial editing pass when I type it in to the computer!

Okay. Am going to try Facing's spreadsheet idea.... anyone know how to set up a formula to calculate the running totals?

No progress on the 600 words - my effort for the flash. I think the problem is that the story I have in my head is overfamiliar and I can't find a way to make it strange - or at least, not in 1000 words.

Am circumnavigating by setting myself a goal of 100 words of free writing - from a prompt, or phrase, or idea, per day.

If you want to shoot me a pm with your email address I can send you the file with the formula's already added you can go from there.

I still do that sometimes, but you still might want to try Scrivener when it comes time to actual type it. I don't use it, but I have tried it and its format might help you keep all those story lines straight.

Ah, silly rabbits. We have just the spreadsheet for you!

We used to post it each month (along with a few others), but the link(s) got dropped along the way.

To help you keep track of your goals, check out these resources:

 I like this. It's more colourful than mine and it has graphs. :) Now if only there were a way to tie it to the thread and allow multiple users to track and record their time so that we could keep each other accountable.

I may just have to play. :D

That's exactly what we did when we began these threads. And those were the spreadsheets we used. They're handy and I like using them at times. Though, they also grew tedious for me and sometimes it was more interesting to play with the spreadsheet formatting than to work out a story problem you're stuck on.

 Is that your way of reminding me that today is my last day off before my submission deadline on the 15th and I still have 17 pages to edit. :p

Fair enough. I'll play with formatting later. Back to the grind. ;)

I had no idea about that. Have a nice day off and good luck with the writing!

I think I broke it already: "Unresolved sheet name 'Summary'." :(
There are a number of broken links and formula issues that need to be fixed but the basic structure is sound. I'll look into fixing it over the next couple of days and let you know when I've got the whole thing working.

I still use that spreadsheet. It's invaluable. Progress means a lot of things to a lot of people. Story progress is great, and so is word count progress. I use both to gauge where I'm at, but nothing happens without words. Characters can do all sorts of fun things in my head, but if it's not written, it doesn't matter. :)
