Interesting, Hobbit. I've been looking at XX and The Black Locomotive by Hughes, with much dithering about taking them on. I know that primarily he's a graphic designer and that's what been holding me back from reading his novels. I know I'd appreciate the artwork, but is that enough? Any advice appreciated.

Hi, AC. Must admit, I knew very little about Rian at first, until I reviewed and really liked XX. It's a real mish mash of styles and graphics, and too long, but I really enjoyed it. (Review here: Review of XX by Rian Hughes (concatenation.org) ) The book has graphic art, true, but a good SF story of alien first contact in there too.

I have the Black Locomotive to read, which I think may be reined in a bit, although I haven't read it yet.

As for the new book- there's very little text. Probably about 30 pages at the front, which although small print and is very educational, may be less than you want. It is all about the art, really.

Thanks for the advice and the link to your review Hobbit. I'll probably give XX a go, even though it sounds like a book that may need a few stabs at. His latest...probably not for me, but you never know.

Ah yes, Lionel Fanthorpe. Who could ever forget Galaxy 666 (even if they desperately wanted to) ?

Here's the thing though, AC. Looking through these covers (I'm pleased to say that Galaxy 666 ISN'T one of them):

a lot of the artwork made me want to read the book - which is its purpose, admittedly, but it shows how good and important to the book the artwork can be.
