NFL: Season 2005/05

Manning: Has there ever been a quarterback who has that much hype who has consistently choked. There is a common denominator on teams he's played for and that is Manning=losses in the big game. Happened 3 straight years in college and now in the pros. The year he left UT, they win the Nat'l Championship.
Dungy also seems to be a bad playoff coach. The Colts O-Line was awful, but the Steelers probably played the same game plan as the Chargers. In that game the O-line was also awful, but teams should correct those kind of mistakes. I don't think anyone should EVER fall for the Colts offense and their regular season mystique. That song seems to get played over and over again.
Steelers are looking very good, though. They played better than Denver. Game in Mile High will be tough where the Broncos don't lose in the playoffs. Go Broncos!
And since I live an hour north of Charlotte, Go Panthers!

I think both championship games could go either way. Which hopefully translates into great games.

Looking at the Carolina/Chicago game, I think Carolina was just a better all around team than the Bears. Also, I'm not that familiar with the Bears roster, but I'm pretty sure most of the team has been in few if any playoff games, while the Panthers have some experience with the playoffs.

At this point, I'm going for the Seahawks.

I can't believe the Colts lost. I was one of the people that defended Manning when people would say that he's garbage in big situations, but I don't think I can do that anymore. With all the blitzing Pittsburgh was doing, someone had to be open for the colts, but Manning never found them. On the other side it looked like Roethlisberger's coming out party. He really looked good, and has made me envious of the qb the Giants could have had if they didn't trade up to get Eli.

As much as I hate to do it, because of all the personal things going on, Dungy gets a really bad mark on this game as well. Pittsburgh basically had the same blitz package the entire game but Dungy, in the entire game, couldn't figure out how to stop it.

With Carolina getting all those yards on the Chicago defense, it really does look like the only reason why Chicago D looked so good was a product of their weak schedual.

On the officiating. TERRIBLE. OMG, I can't believe there can be that many big mistakes in a single weekend. Luckily none of that in the end effected the outcome of the games. (even in Denver, because NE still had a shot but made many mistakes after the PI.)

Oh and Ficus you, as a Pats fan, can not complain ever about bad officiating, because you had the worst call in the history of NFL (remember Oakland in 2000) go your way.

I feel the same way, Eperitos. I moved to Indy the same year Peyton got drafted. He was terrible in his first year, but showed a lot of improvement in the second half of that year. He started playing really well in his second year. He still does play very well, but only in the regular season. Against aggressive, hard-charging defenses, he crumbles, or his team crumbles.
This is a characteristic stretching back to college. Excuses could be made regarding the defense, etc. But, Manning has been the common denominator. He needs to step up and play well in the big game or he's always going to be relegated to the good-nearly-great but not great (ala Montana, Elway, Aikman, and Brady).
I have to say, I have a heck of a lot of respect for the way Brady carried himself throughout this whole tough season. No whining or complaining. Especially after that Denver loss. He was gracious in defeat and accepted responsibility for the loss. He admitted that as a team they didn't play well, but mostly that HE also hadn't played well.
Contrast that with the way Manning acted after the Steeler loss. Same old story: the O-line didn't play well, the receivers weren't open, the defense was bad, etc. No criticism of his own play. That may be why the Colts fold in big games - they don't have the same caliber of leader as Brady.
I used to think Manning would one day be on par with Brady in the hall of great quarterbacks. Now, I think that will never happen: Brady isn't as good a pure passer, but he's a much better leader. This doesn't mean I think Manning is a bad person, because he's always done a lot for charities in college and the pros. He's been very willing to give his time and energy to different charities and in Tennessee, he's still loved. But, as a football leader, he's not there.
I'm hoping that Palmer, who is compared to Manning as a passer, is more like Brady as a leader. From all I've read, he's always deflected praise from himself to his teammates and is very up-front in accepting blame for losses. I hope that is how he truly is and not just an act.

Thank you for your kind words about Brady. Yes he is the real thing. He has had to learn to take the bad with the good, so he is more polished now, but he has always accepted responsibilty for the mistakes and for poor play. He also always credits his teammates and his coaches when good things happen.
He is one of the guys, and has a good sense of humor, even when he has to laugh at himself (the infamous goat picture). He took less money from the Pats, though he could have held them for ransom, so the team would have more to spend on the other guys/positions. He wants to be in NE for the whole time he plays and he is willing to be part of the solution, and not part of any problems. He really reminds me of Bobby Orr.

He is still young and I think he has more SBs in him, and it will be fun to watch him.

I can't imagine what it must be like with Palmer, because to have your winner, and then to have him taken away, must be awful. But hopefully he will be able to come back quickly. If your team uses his absence to strengthen themselves, then when he comes back they may be able to take off and be a threat again. Good Luck. I think the stress of his injury would have stripped away any false front on his part. So if he isn't carrying on, and the press would love to expose it, then I think you can take him as the real deal. He seems to be thoughtful, and so he may take this experience to learn to really appreciate the good, and ignore the minor-league stuff.

Oh and Ficus you, as a Pats fan, can not complain ever about bad officiating, because you had the worst call in the history of NFL (remember Oakland in 2000) go your way.

Eperitos, of course I will object to bad calls. When they ignore infractions, and rules, or make up violations that aren't there, then I will not be silent. The Pats had a lucky break when they called that, but it was a legitimate call based on a real rule. There is a difference between that and calling infractions that don't exist, or ignoring those that do.

And bad calls don't only affect the Pats. It would be a very black day if the Colts had won after all those bad calls on Sunday. I realize that not everyone is a Steeler fan (I myself am not) but it would have been a travesty if they had been robbed by the refs.

Hoorah, I had about 15 dollars on the Steelers. My heart almost stopped, when Bettis fumbled it. Fortunately - and fairly - the won. I agree with FF that anything but a Steelers victory would have been a disaster for the game with the bad refereeing.

The Panthers victory and Seahawks victory were both as expected but I was disappointed in New England - or rather disappointed in their number of turnovers.

Next weekend:
Panthers without Foster is severely handicapped and it will be a Seahawks victory 28-17 (Steve Smith scores both the Panthers touchdowns).

Steelers are really hot right now and the Broncos didn't look good against New England. Steelers win 31-14.

I have a question for the american fans. What did a for instance Baltimore Colts fan do, when the team moved to Indianapolis? Do the loyalty stay with the club or with the town?

For me, the loyalty is with the city. So, if the Bengals moved and Cincinnati got another team, that would be the team I would cheer for.

Well that is the whole point, no one is supposed to look good against the Pats. ;)

I am rooting for the teams I hate less. I just can't bring myself to hate the Broncos. We screwed up, and frankly they are just too pathetic to hate, so I hope they beat the Steelers, them I hate. I also hate the Panthers so I want the Seahawks, another null entity, to beat them and win it all. I can't bring myself to hate the Rams either, another sad and pathetic team.

I have a little different angle on your question because none of the teams in NE have ever gone anywhere (though there was terrible talk about the Pats a few times before the Krafts took over). I am not loyal to the city or really to the team as much as I am loyal to the players. I don't like it when our players move around or leave the team.

I am only into football now but as a kid I loved the Bruins (Ice Hockey) too. The team of the 70s was wonderful, and I loved the Bruins and hockey. Eventually the players from those teams moved on or retired, and I just couldn't bring myself to care anymore. The last straw was when Terry O'Reilly retired. :(

So now I love the players and hate to lose any to retirement or other teams. We are pretty lucky that the Pats actually keep a lot of their players. I am always shocked when watching a game and players on the other team don't really belong there. For example there are lot of Steelers who aren't anymore, and some of the Panthers, and it always jars me.

I have liked the Pats players over the years and have accepted their coming and going, but it was easier because they weren't a once in a life-time team. Now they are, and I hate it when they go. Some drink the koolaid and will stay for less money because of the glory and the chance to be on an historic team, and others won't and the Pats won't pay top dollar and they move on.

This off-season will bring new departures and I am not looking forward to it. I don't really care about the draft and rookies until I see them in action and see if they have 'it'.

Well now that the injury situations have cleared up, I'm ready to make my picks.
I am 4-4 with my picks, so I'm hoping my mediocrity will continue :( .

Pittsburgh 24 - Denver 20
I think the Steelers have a little bit of destiny around them. they were big time dogs last week, and they pull out the victory. I think Bettis is going to have a great game, after he escaped that fumble last week, I think he's going to come out on fire this week. Also I wasn't impressed with Denver last week, the Pats basically handed them the game.

Seattle 21 - Carolina 20
This is purely because of the injuries to Carolina. I like the Panthers and would have picked them if they were healthy, but with the injuries to Foster and Peppers, I just can't see them winning. Its a shame I think a Superbowl between them and Pittsburgh would be a lot better then a Seattle - Pittsburgh one (and please God don't let it be Seattle v. Denver).

Cursed Steelers against the who-cares Seahawks. A Super Bowl in which I don't care who wins.
When's the Daytona 500 anyway? Maybe I should start a NASCAR thread. Chances are that I'd be the only one interested though.

Yeah I was really surprised by how well the Seahawks defence played, it was obvious they'd have to shut down Smith better than the Bears did but they put so much pressure on Delhomme that he had a breakdown. Shaun Alexander made a serious difference as expected and that hit on the Panthers third-choice RB meant their running game became non-existent.
I thing the Steelers will go all the way now, they have incredible momentum and Big Ben goes from strength to strength. If the blitzing package puts Hasselbeck to the test I think he'll struggle.

Yeah, wow, the Broncos played like the Pats yesterday. I really thought it would be a close game. The Steelers, however, looked really good.

I hope the superbowl isn't over after the first quarter.

B5

I was not surprised by the results last weekend. Both Jakes are more dangerous to their own teams that the opposition. Everyone was just in love with Delhomme, but they seemed to forget that he melts down very easily and throws a lot of picks.

Denver's offense did nothing against the Pats, they were given about 24 points because of the bad calls. They couldn't do anything against the Steelers, and the refs didn't give them the game, so they also melted down. The Steelers also didn't screw up like the Pats did by turning the ball over.

I want the Seahawks to win, but I also think they are the more balanced team. Rothburger looks great, but if you get in a situation where he has to do too much he also melts down. Cowher also has a history of snagging playoff defeat from the jaws of victory. They are also favored and will have to deal with all the hoopla.

I think the Seahawks win, and I think it might be a blowout like last weekend, where one team has a really bad day and the other just runs over it.

im predicting a 27-10 victory for the Seahawks..Sure it might be a bit biased decision on my part (Dolphins my favourite team (yes I know they suck))..After watching them play this weekend I was quite impressed..Hassleback is looking good even two weeks ago when Shaun Alexander left the game early..I really want Seattle to bring their first superbowl home.

Yawn.

Wow those championship games were boring. Both were over before the second half began. On the bright side I went 2-0 on picks this week :) , now if only I put money on the games  .

Again I have to express my jelousy of the Steelers where Roelisberger is concerned. The Giants drafted the other Manning, and to this point he doesn't look anywhere near as good as Ben is looking.

Oh well. On to the Superbowl. I think its Weird that the six seed from the AFC is favored to win over the no. 1 seed from the NFC. The Seahawks just can't get any respect. Well, I still won't give them any. The Steelers will win Superbowl XL.

This is like the Who-Cares Bowl for me. Have no feelings about the Seahawks, other than the fact that they exist. Hate the Steelers, though. It's not like the past few seasons with the Pats and their quest for history. It's just two decent teams. Boring.

I'm picking the Hawks to win the Superbowl. Even though I'm very happy the Colts got knocked out, it would have been intersting to see them play the Seahawks in the big game. I'm not saying the Steelers won't put up a good fight, but, as somebody else said, I think the Hawks are too balanced on offense and defense. If they win, they'll certainly get the recognition they deserve and next year we'll all know who they are.

Big Ben is now the hottest QB in football. Pittsburgh had by far the toughest road in the playoffs, and they knocked off Cinnci, the Colts and Denver, all in hostile territory. They have great LBs, and Troy Polamalu is a fantastic ballhawk. Steeler fans will outnumber Seattle fans 3 to 1.

No more home advantage for the Seahawks, all they've got going for them is Shaun Alexander and those hideous janitor-in-a-drum uni's. :p

Steelers will destroy Seattle, as bad as the Denver game was, Seattle won't even get that close.

Congrats to the Steelers. I had a strong suspicion they would win. Joey Porter should be proud, BTW, that the Steelers played straight-up smash mouth football and didn't run an gimmicky plays. BTW, was that the WORST clock management you've ever seen at the end of a half/game? There goes "Holmgren is a genius" maybe for all time.
Seattle was clearly the class of the NFC this year, but like in times past when the AFC would perenially lose to the NFC, the worm seems to have turned. The AFC has now won 7 of the last 9 Super Bowls. Next year, with NE healthy and Pittsburgh still really good, I only see the Giants and the Seahawks really challenging, but I think they'll still be a little short on talent. Teams in the AFC that may improve next year are Baltimore (Boller started to really look comfortable the last few games), Miami (very dangerous and very attractive to make the playoffs) and Cleveland. Dropoffs in play can be expected from Indy and Cincinnati. San Diego is anchored by Schottenheimer, so they may make it to the playoffs, but they'll lose early like all Schottenheimer teams.
The NY Giants, depending on how well Eli progresses, I could actually see making a run at a Super Bowl win. I don't think it will happen, but it won't surprise me if it does. The other teams in the NFC just have too many big weaknesses. Washington - no offense. Dallas- not enough consistency at QB. Carolina- inconsistent QB.

Well I can finally say something civil about this mess. What a total travesty the game was. It was a pity that it couldn't end with either a tie or just giving the officials the trophy.

The Steelers were awful, and didn't deserve to win, but the Hawks were actually worse. We will never know, if the officiating had been fair, if the results would have been the same or not. The whole playoff cycle had been particularly bad.

Now of course there is the scandal with the gambling ring, and they are trying to confine it to the NHL - where they work, but they were betting on the NFL. No one seems to want to touch that part with a 10-foot pole. It will be interesting to see what eventually comes out of the FBIs investigation, if in fact they allow it out.

On the Pats fan site there is a posting of all the threads about the officiating on almost all the other fan sites. There are huge threads and polls on ESPN that they have removed and have been re-started, several petitions to the NFL on-line, and at least some journalists talking about it. Though many and the NFL are sweeping it under the rug, and trying to paint it as just whiny Hawks fans. The problem is that fans of all the other teams can see the same thing happening to them - and some have already seen their team burned.

I said Big Ben would melt down and he did, what an embarrassment to go into the record books with a 22.6 rating. What I don't understand is why Big Ben isn't blocking, or running and Randel-El isn't the QB ? He seems to have a better arm, and better sense.

In terms of clock management - it was almost the same as the Eagles and the end of the last SB when they declined to run a 2:00 drill. Though the Eagles only screwed up at the end, the Hawks screwed up the end of both halves. Is it some fantasy in the NFC that 2:00 drill is dangerous, or un-needed. How odd.

I thought the hype for the Steelers, even the ads during the game showing them with the trophy just make the NFL look like the WWF. I hope they really are 'getting it' and will do something over the break to prevent future occurances.

I am looking to next year, though I do want to enjoy the summer. I hope we can hold onto most of our free agents, and that Rodeny is well enough to come back. I think Tom will be fine with getting over his hernia and the surgery (makes good old Donovan and his flack jacket into a joke). We didn't do well in terms of free agent pick ups last year, so I hope we do better this year. I think we will do well with the draft and getting people off the street. Just hope we don't have any surprise retirements or trades.

I suspect that Bill Belichick sent Eric Mangini to the Jets in the expectation that they will go down in flames, and that seems to be shaping up as a possibility. The Bills are out of it. Miami is going to be a threat I think, but I don't mind because it is boring to be in a completly bad division.

I loved having Tom do the coin flip. He and Randel-El were the 2 best active QBs on the field. I have the picture of them all standing around watching the coin as the new wallpaper on my desk top. Thought the Stones did ok considering it was a big arena and no time to warm up. Thought most of the ads were pretty lame.

I am trying to talk myself into Arena FB and NFL Europe, but I have my doubts that it will take. Not even sure if I will watch the pro bowl, though I hope the AFC wins.
