Oct '10 Flash Fiction Contest

--Due oct 21st. 950 words.

This time I've decided to be deceptively simple. Therefore we have a theme:

Alien, non-human, unhuman, other than human, beings of other kind, a species not of our own--whatever you want to call them. The genres are replete with characters not of our world or our species be they aliens, elves or undead. So for this month we will have flash fiction featuring something(s) not human.

Write your best unhuman story--spelling counts--open a thread in the stories subsection and post a link here. I set the word limit at 950 words because I can. The successful story will be creative and impressive. (Hey, I had to set Hitler loose on the modern world to get here.) Don't forget to edit.

Somewhere on the 21st--I don't know what time of day, I will close the contest and set up the voting thread(s) and we will finish the voting by the 30th, and hopefully by then have a new winner. (Don't wait until the last minute to enter, or to vote.)

Just to be clear: are you banning all human characters from the story or the main character has to be unhuman, or just the presence of an unhuman character can suffice?

The short answer: No. I am not banning human characters nor am I suggesting a placement for any not human character.

The longer answer: I would suggest your story in some way explore the inhuman condition. In doing so the characters may be human, non-human, anti-human or other. Keep in mind your work will be judged not entirely by me(or not very much by me). Those who read and vote may choose to vote for other stories if they feel you have missed the theme in some way.

Not in the rules but important: Be excellent.

Hm... I haven't participated in a while, but now I think I might want to give this a shot. Whether in the universe of my previous shorts, or in the universe of my current WiP (which are related in any case), I can't say. But there's still quite a bit of time, and classes only start on the 11th. Hopefully, I'll be able to give this a shot!

I actually did a wordcount on HE's story and it told me it was 1015 words, not1050. I guess it doesn't matter either way, you probably still don't want to cut anything out.

I'll probably pass on this month's flash contest. I have a horror story for the short story contest in the works and i'm falling behind with it. I'll probably focus on that because I don't feel like writing a half-assed short story.

I know, I shouldn't beat a dead horse, but what if I like to beat that particular dead horse? Sorry, but you all will have to suffer another plant story from me.

Points to whoever recognizes and remembers the story submitted during the superhero contest that this is similar to (not intentional, just came out that way).

The longer I stay away from the FFs the harder it is lately to commit. I am hacking my wait through my short story for the other contest. Damn it - think of something. Maybe a story about the gnome that I know who lives in my oak tree. Its really old and so is he...

I'm on the opposite pole DD. I've started three WIPs for the short story, and I'm not happy with any of them. I may just have to read and vote for that one.

As luck would have it my computer died (my frankenstein twice removed... actually only the part the connects me to the internet died, that is, when the thing will actually start...) So I just ordered a new tower. It's supposed to arrive on the 19th, and there should be no problem at all.

In other words, anything could happen. If you haven't heard from me by the 22nd, someone please set up the voting thread(s).

In the mean time, I have a pretty good alien story I have to smuggle into work on a flash drive...
