So off we go again. I'm 1,150 words into a novelette for Gardner Dozois's The Book of Legends. So far I've got an orphan unwillingly apprenticed to a dyer/fuller who stands him in tubs of urine all day and lets an older apprentice brutalize him. My hero is going to run away. And, because it's for a book about legends, he's going to encounter one and have it motivate him. But what else happens is still beyond me.

Only thing I've got accomplished today (but it's good I think) is that I purchased the subscription (boo! Hiss! Yuck! etc!) to Office 365 Home ($100/yr) and have been testing it on machines and in operation. I think I've got everything working and was able to install it on my small laptop and my desktop (5 installs on PCs, 5 on tablets, 5 on phones, + 5 Tbytes of online storage) where it (and I was concerned about this) installed side-by-side with my existing Office 2010 version which I'd been using to finalize my .docx files for upload to Amazon Publishing. Libre Writer/Office does something different with the Table of Contents which is not compatible with Amazon Publishing (or I am just ignorant of how to make it work) but in any case I tested that as well with Word 2016/365 version and all is good. Only remaining step now is to set up on my daughter's machine (this was the real impetus to even do this - she needs it for the class she's taking). All looks good though and heck I've even got a few hours left in this very snowy day in Denver.

I'm about a third the way into the novelette about the runaway apprentice for Gardner's Book of Legends, with the characters in motion and conflict building. Then while I was making breakfast today, the whole shape of the story popped into my mind. It often -- indeed, usually -- happens that way. Thank goodness, or I would be wandering around in the dark, looking for a light switch that might not be there.

I don't know if this counts, but ...

Simson. Delilah. And a dragon.

I am starting the publication process for my upcoming novel, I Shall Slay the Dragon!, a standalone biblical-mythology fantasy book staring the original Romeo & Juliet cast, the original femme fatale, and the beast. The End of Days, Gog and Magog, it’s all there.

Coming soon.

Cheers,
Igor

Five hundred plus words on the apprentice. I decided to bring back a character who'd gone offstage so that I can keep up the mystery of who's good and who's bad longer.

OMG! I'm ROTFLMAO.... I had no idea the Microsoft word could/would read out loud text documents.
I ponied up to try out Office 365 (in place of my ancient Office 2010) and just noticed the "Read Aloud" button under the 'Review' tab. I had it read my flash piece "Little s**t" and I thought I was going to die laughing! I love it!

Since 2002 built in and since about 1992 using a 3rd party screen reader.

You NEVER own a copy of Office 365, it's insecure rental on the so called cloud.
I get screen reader or my old Kindle DXG to read my writing to have an idea how people will manage alien names, or fantasy names.

Wasn't in Word 2010.
(p.s. I've been building/working with speech synthesizers since way before the IBM PC even existed :) )

as far as 'owning' I won't get into that, but there are issues with any software license. Still wrt the Office 365 subscription I avoided it myself till just this time but for a variety or reasons (which I've discussed in the separate thread) wanted to try it out. I'm actually very impressed with what you get for the subscription. $100 gets you full office installs on 5 computers, 5 tablets and 5 phones for up to 5 users as well as 5 TBytes of online storage (1 TB per user). I'm actually quite impressed and provided they don't start raising the price every year or reducing the features I'll probably stick with it for a while.
