Just finished The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.
I thought the ending was a bit strange, but overall it was a pretty good read. The first Pulitzer winner I've ever read.
Back to fantasy now and I'll have my 3rd attempt at getting more than 50 pages into Eyes of God by Marco.

You were absolutely right. Two in one, three in the other. Unfortunately due to finals and Christmas gatherings I haven't gotten very far on the first book so far. I'll make time soon.

I'm rereading a Clash of Kings by Martin, and it's as good as I did remember, IMHO.
I'm almost scared of christmas because I'dont think that I've even read all the books I bought for last christmas, and the to read pile is growing fast, and I'm stuck with rereading books.

I just finished Wit'ch Gate by James Clemens. Its the 4th book in the Banned and the Banished series. This is a series that seems to be flying under the radar for most people. I started it a few months ago because I stumbled across the first book (Wit'ch Fire) and it sounded interesting. Its not groundbreaking, this is Clemens' first series and he definitely stumbles at some points, and some of it is a little cheesy. But for the most part it has been entertaining. However I have definitely noticed a marked improvement in the writing/storytelling as the books moved along. Wit'ch Gate was hands down the best book so far. I'm now looking forward to reading Wit'ch Star the final book in the series which is now out in hardback.

Also, I just started Kushiel's Dart (Jacqueline Carey), which looks to be very promising.

Finished Dawnthief last night. Can anyone answer a question for me, please? Three times in the oook Barclay describes a character as huge because he is over 6 feet. What is the average height in England? I don't think of someone as huge unless they're pushing seven feet and grossing more than 300 pounds.

Umm.....i dunno what average is, but i consider 6' to be tallish.

The current average height for a man is approximately 5'9" and approximately 5'4" for a woman.

I have not read the book Dawntheif, but depending on when it takes place you should keep in mind that the average height has increased over the centuries. For example, the average height for a man in the 17th Century was 5'6". So, depending on when they story was set, a man who stood over 6 feet tall could have been much taller than the average man.

Shannon: Dawnthief takes place on a different world from earth so the descriptions can be taken to reflect the author's own biases. From the stats you provided and Sammie's notion of tallish, I can understand Barclay's view.
Mine is based on Shaquille O'Neal and a few dozen linemen in the National Football League.
Didn't hurt the story at all, just raised the question in my mind.
I am also pleased to report that at 5'11" I am - by Sammie's definition - close to tallish.

I'm just about to start on A Clash of Kings myself, Cardo. I read A Game of Thrones a year to two back, and just spent about forty-five minutes on a Martin fansite getting re-acquainted with the cast and characters. I see book four in the series is coming out next spring, so I figured I'd better get a move on if I want to keep up with it.

Let's see, so far this month I have read both aCoK and aSoS by GRRM. My first time through both. Wow. I hope he can keep this up.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Very gritty book. If GRRM's violence isn't enough for you... look no further. I'm looking forward to reading his other stuff.

Currently reading Helliconia Spring by Brian Aldiss. Good stuff. I have been wanting to read for awhile and I'm sorry I waited so long.

This month, I pick up The Jackal of Nar for a second time and actually finished it this time around. It was alright, IMO, but I doubt I'll be continuing on with the series. It just didn't do it for me.

Next, I took a short break from the genre and read a narrative on WWI. Cheery stuff.

After that, I read Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz. If you like light, fast paced medievel fantasy, this is the book for you. Lot's of court intrigue and drama. It made a nice change of pace.

I have know idea what I'm reading next. Dammit.

Next up will be either Heroes Die or The Barbed Coil.

I would encourage you to read the rest of the series. The Jackal of Nar was his freshman effort and while not great, he certainly introduced some interesting characters and battle equipment. As the series progresses, his writing improves, the characters undergo intriguing changes, the political and social environment of the continent fleshed out a little better, and it transforms into a worthwhile series. The last two books certainly redeem the first.

I've just finished Orson Scott Card's "Shadow Puppets". It was not all that bad, but I think Card went a bit too far with writing all the sequels and "parallels" for "Ender's Game". I really ejoyed the first couple of Ender books and the first one about Bean, but it becomes too much a soap opera with Bean starting to have children and everything.
