Reading in March

I finished the Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe today. I really enjoyed his horror tales, they were a very good read and brought several chills down my spine! My favorites out of all of them were "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Pit and the Pendulum".
I'm now reading "The Runelords" by David Farland. I'm only one chapter into the book so far, and already I'm sucked in! :)
 
Finished Fool's Fate which wraps up the Tawny Man series by Robin Hobb. It was excellent and ended the series very well.

I look forward to any other books by Robin Hobb and wonder what she will produce next, though I will miss Fitz and the Fool. I think those are the two most interesting characters I've ever read in fantasy.

Haven't picked up anything else yet. Still savoring Fool's Fate.

Just finished Revelation by Carol Berg. Really good stuff. I wish I hadn't waited so long to start this set of books. I think some characters' development and the end of the book suffered a bit because of the 1st person POV, but not nearly enough to ruin the book. Just to illustrate how good this book was, I accidentally picked up book 3 (Restoration) and started reading it first. I got about 10 pages in before I realized something was wrong. The point is, that even though those 10 pages gave away a number of things about Revelation, I still enjoyed it thoroughly. I don't know for sure, but I think that says something.
 
And just as a little prompt, one of the staff at sffworld has recently had a lengthy dialogue with Carol, which should be going up as an interview soon. And it is very enlightening, I thought.

What a coincidence - I recently read Revelation too! It was one of the more intriguing epic fantasy-type books I've read in a while, and I do intend to follow up on the next two books.

Apart from that, I'm reading a short story collectin by Kelly Link called Stranger Things Happen. Whimsical and dark in turns, these stories are somewhere in between weird fantasy and magic realism. Cool stuff!

Next two books? I thought there was only one more book after Revelation.
 
Just finished New Spring the Novel by R J. It was a good read - though I'm glad I only got it from the library. Going in, I was glad New Spring was fairly short, but now I wish it were some how longer.

Actually, Revelation is the second book in the trilogy. Tranformation is first, Restoration is third.
 
It took ages to log on. I have avoided the Carol Berg series as I also don't like books in the first person much, but Godmage, you have made me change my mind. Luckily they are in the library, so I shall get onto them in the future. Still reading Traitors moon.
 
Well, you may be quite surprised by this but I stopped reading The Runelords. I liked it to begin with, but the whole "earth" thing got really dense and seemed like an essay on environmentalism. That kind of magic system just isn't my bag. You Farland fans out there can flame me if you want, this is just my opinion.
I'm now reading Rhapsody by Elizabeth Haydon.
 
I have been reading SF, but now I am reading Little Big by John Crowley for the book group.
 
Just finished CJ Cherryh's Fortress in the Eye of Time. Very slow paced book. On top of that, the punctuation was pretty bad...had a hard time figuring out what sentences meant a lot of the time. Very frustrating. Interesting characters and ideas, though. I'll be reading the other three books soon...
 
I was worried after readingFortress in the Eye of Time as well, Warewolf. The pace does pick up in the rest of the books, however, and I thought the series turned out really well.
 
I'm Finishing Fool's Fate and The Jackel of Nar. I started the Jackel about 2 or 3 times and then moved on to other series. I like the Jackel but after starting it and getting 30-40 pages in then the next book in another series that I was waiting for would come out. I just need to dedicate some time to The Tyrants and Kings Series.
 
I've almost finished Ricardo Pinto's 'The Chosen.' It's a bit a of a slog to get through it. Way too descriptive for my tastes. Very little happens and there is page after page of prose detailing the settings, clothing and so on. The world and the storyline created is actually quite interesting but I find myself balking at having verbose and long winded descriptions of every room the main character walks into. A lot of the writing does seem unwieldy and clumsy, with big chunks of exposition being spurted out but fairly important not made clear. I'm hoping things will pick up in the last quarter or so, perhaps after everything has been described and established and Pinto can get on with the story.
 
Things do pick up, definately. And the sequel is excellent.


Currently reading: Child of the Prophecy by Juliet Marillier
I've been meaning to finish this trilogy for ages. The first two were both fantastic reads and I'm hoping for similar quality from the conclusion.
 
Damn, just as things pick up there's an abrupt and brutal cliffhanger ending... looks like I might have to read the next one.
 
Yes, you do have to read the next one - because it's fantastic. My favourite book of last year... maybe.
