The sprawling narrative deals with a far future where humanity struggles and wages war against past souls flooding back into the land of the living via possession (Al Capone and Fletcher Christian are among the returnees).

just unforgivably stupid silly nonsense and I resented finishing the series. That series colours my perception of his other books and meant I missed Evolutionary Void....

I have never spotted that. Interestingly American actually preserves some of the original spellings of British words, which changed here after the first books had been shipped. Lots of brits who moan about corruption of language by the yanks haven't really looked into it terribly hard. Mind you most brits are idiots.

I bet not too. I've not seen it dealt with in exactly those terms anywhere really as everything running in an infinite simulation space is recursive and therefore redundant as a plot device. Nobody deals with the approach to it (much, Reynolds "Pushing Ice" is close I seem to remember now).
There's plenty of near infinite compute space (Reynolds brown dwarf, loads of authors black holes etc) events, which are essentially the same category since an abstraction into a near infinite simulation space is pretty much the same thing from a readers point of view, and doesn't preclude a universe outside. That's probably too much chattering on eh? I haven't read it. No idea. :)

I think I took a peek at "Night's Dawn" in the bookstore when it first came out. The plot points seemed to repel the hell out of me, and I never read it. I guess that means I'm not spoiled.

Later on I read Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained, and I did not even realize (or remember) that Hamilton was the same guy who wrote "Night's Dawn." I think I heard that all of his series are kind of loosely set within the same universe, just over vast time-lines. Is that right?

Also, pox, I am really most curious to hear your reaction to the links I listed in post #32. Have you had a chance to visit those links yet? :)

I did exactly the same thing. I dunno really. I think yeah... They're just not that memorable to me for some reason though I know for sure I have enjoyed some of his books a lot and hated others.

Celestia for supergeeks. Wow. I work in hardcore realtime graphics systems (hence the "I am building a holodeck" references) and he's basically got the sweeeeetest job.

You mean on the actual elevator? I would assume by going slowly.... initially... We're talking a big structure on a big tether, and a long transit time right?

Now how cool is that! First time I saw this flick was actually in the Rose Space Center, so I've seen your friend's friend's excellent work as it was meant to be seen. Stunning.

His dress, looks and mannerisms reminded me of one of my favorite guitar heroes: Steve Vai.

Gap's good though.

Covenant is not for everyone of course.:D The Gap is certainly way more accessible I would think. I must say, Donaldson has an incredible way with words. He can take several pages to describe 5 or 10 seconds of action, yet he does it with such beauty and realism, it doesn't even matter how long he takes. His vocabulary is deep enough to require a dictionary held close by while reading the Covenant books.
 
yeah, he can be just plain nasty though. I have pretty much a blanket ban on that. Not watched anything horrible (horror, thriller, the news, anything) since I was a teenager and haven't had a nightmare for years...

Gap was on the EDGE.

Yeah, I mean wind, more specifically wind on the cable trying to push it flat against the earth, as in, collapse it like a kite without wind to keep it afloat.

But what I mean is the elevator's anchor on the far end (space) is pretty much just sitting there, as I understand it, and the cable they lift on is arguably raking through forty plus miles of thin to thick air. What I mean is 'wind' at the lower levels, jetstream at higher levels, and finally like stratosphere / ozone layer. (I'm hazy on just how far out those terms cover) and I wonder how that's supposed to meet conservation of momentum without a propulsion source on the space end. Either that or I'm being silly and it's not supposed to run straight up. Or it's 'pulled' around by the earth base somehow like a really weird version of a kite turned, you know, sideways.

What I like most about it is the idea of not having to use "a pound is a pound" on some parts of the structure, since it's so huge. Get far enough away from earth and a pound doesn't weigh that much....

From what I know the base end is MASSIVE and it tapers. I think it's not a massive concern compared to all the other stuff. Like a satellite strike, or similar. If the cable breaks near the top then the whole thing snakes back down. If you investigate the tonnage you can see why there are concerns on placement. Deep middle of the sea is preferred I think. The anchor is WAY out in Clarke orbit, so is stationary with respect to the ground, so it's just wind incident against what is effectively a big skyscraper. Sure there's big winds, but you have a top and bottom anchor, which you don't get in a gale on a building.

I don't really think you could say that about what Stephen is doing with Covenant though. He does not get too terribly bloody graphic or S&M sexual in this saga. Again, not for everybody, but for those who do like this series, Against All Things Ending is really worth a look. Donaldson's prose skills seem to be accelerating. I think he was always excellent, but right now his writing is just superb.

It sounds like your own experience with Covenant made you feel like Morn Hyland after yet another Angus Thermopyle love scene. Can you take some Novocaine and elaborate please? :D

I love the idea of a Space elevator. Once we're ready for that, we are really on the way to all the vast resources off this rock. But I thought all these issues with the tensile strength of the cable to resist the wind and the centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the Earth etc, is only supposed to be solved by some sort of nano-tech materials?

no, you're quite right, gap is well over the edge. It turned out nice though! I find the relentless grind of Covenant more of a problem. There's not the page turn shock-horror-did-he-really-just-actually-write-that like in gap, but there's too much melancholy for me...
 
The system is built precisely to faithfully render a person in just like that. There's a realtime scanning system and 10G networking, and 1000 ish processors to facilitate that. Give us a few more months and that person need not be real....
 
I saw this idea was mentioned in some of the major media outlets, and I thought it might be of some interest here.

Perhaps these rocky economic times mean it is now time to get really imaginative and innovative to achieve a manned mission to Mars - how about a one-way trip, completely financed by private industry?

There is a pretty detailed proposal for just such an endeavor, amazingly enough. The idea does seem to make some sense, after all, explorers of ages gone by had no real expectations of ever returning to their homelands, most probably never did.

Are there people in the world today who would be just bold, daring and crazy enough to seize the opportunity of legendary immortality by becoming the first humans to colonize another planet?

I think so. They would have to give up a lot, but still i think there are people who would do it, just for the sheer ballsiness of the whole idea. There are certainly enough eccentric billionaires who would put their checkbooks on the line for it.

Richard Branson's already doing this with his plans to put anyone in orbit for a price. God knows he wasting a lot of cash in Formula One right now, he might as well take a shot at this, since this will give him a little bit of that bold immortality as well.

Seems to me this would also make a pretty good SF story. Maybe this story has already been written?

Anyway, here are some highlights on the idea, I recommend a look at the entire link as well:

A human mission to Mars is technologically feasible, but hugely expensive requiring enormous financial and political commitments. A creative solution to this dilemma would be a one-way human mission to Mars in place of the manned return mission that remains stuck on the drawing board. Our proposal would cut the costs several fold but ensure at the same time a continuous commitment to the exploration of Mars in particular and space in general. It would also obviate the need for years of rehabilitation for returning astronauts, which would not be an issue if the astronauts were to remain in the low-gravity environment of Mars. We envision that Mars exploration would begin and proceed for a long time on the basis of outbound journeys only. A mission to Mars could use some of the hardware that has been developed for the Moon program. One approach could be to send four astronauts initially, two on each of two space craft, each with a lander and sufficient supplies, to stake a single outpost on Mars. A one-way human mission to Mars would not be a fixed duration project as in the Apollo program, but the first step in establishing a permanent human presence on the planet. The astronauts would be re-supplied on a periodic basis from Earth with basic necessities, but otherwise would be expected to become increasingly proficient at harvesting and utilizing resources available on Mars. Eventually the outpost would reach self-sufficiency, and then it could serve as a hub for a greatly expanded colonization program. There are many reasons why a human colony on Mars is a desirable goal, scientifically and politically. The strategy of one-way missions brings this goal within technological and financial feasibility. Nevertheless, to attain it would require not only major international cooperation, but a return to the exploration spirit and risk-taking ethos of the great period of Earth exploration, from Columbus to Amundsen, but which has nowadays been replaced with a culture of safety and political correctness.

Conclusions

Self-preservation considerations in a dangerous universe and the human exploratory spirit compel us to explore space and colonize other planets. Mars is the planet in our solar system, which is reasonably close and provides an abundance of resources and shelter for such a colonization effort. Nevertheless, the first step for the colonization of Mars will be the most difficult. Here, we propose that the most pragmatic approach to achieve this goal is by establishing a small permanent robotic base followed by a series of one-way missions to Mars. The advantages of a one-way human mission are many-fold including a dramatic reduction of costs, the long-term commitment by the space agency, the public, and the crew, and that no rehabilitation program is needed for crew members when remaining on the low-gravity surface of Mars. The challenges are still monumental, though, foremost because political and financial long-term commitments have to be secured.
