Short Story Competition?

I'm just getting back into the swing of things, and a little late to the party (the contest post and the virtual kegger) but I have a little suggestion to make the reading and critiquing part a little easier. Depending on the number of submissions, you could make mini-groups, say 5-8, have those folks critique and vote, and then pass the top 2-3 on to the whole for final overall voting. Kind of a mini-playoffs, I guess. It would cut down on the initial reading, and hopefuly enable a few more detailed critiques.

I hope to participate.

Ack! Here I was; minding my own business and lurking around this thread when I came upon mention of other people finding their work sprinkled about the nets. Of course, narcissist that I am, I had to google myself...

Lo and behold, someone's posted my work on some other forum called trackpads or something. What the heck is this? I'm outraged! I'm indignant! I'm...kinda flattered that someone liked my stuff enough to post it...but mostly I'm confused because I signed up for the forum and tried to click the link and it says I don't have permission to access that page.

Hmph.

Moving on....

I'm interested in this short story thingamabob.

I'm just having a ponder on a new theme, and I'm still trying to decide how to handle submissions (stories section versus alternatives). Unless there are any really really loud yelling objections, I think I'm just gonna stick with the Stories section, as the alternative options aren't really thrilling me.

Not to worry -- I plan to post the competition soon! Should be up by tomorrow. :)

I definitely look forward to it! I want to thank everyone that's participated in the flashfic contests and who will be participating in this contest as well. My writing really started with the flash fic contests here a few months ago, and now I will get to move on to short story length creations with this contest. I've been enjoying every moment. So thank you all!

Peace,
- Sui

December could be a busy writing month if inspiration strikes me with this this contest too. My mind is abuzz for the flash fic - havent got a word written yet but all the bones are there. Damn you Fung! I do have to work sometimes too.

You know, I'm now debating waiting to start this until January. I'm not sure I'll even be able to participate.

I'll see how I feel once my I squeeze the blood out of my caffeine system.

I'm not sure I will either. I have a goal to finish up two short stories (that I've abandoned for quite some time) before the end of the year. I know if I attempt to do this contest (on top of the flash contest)... we'll, they ain't gettin' done.

No worries.. It'll happen when it happens. Though, I'm sure this will be a tough month regardless.

Know what I suggest? Since this would be the inaugural short story competition, you could give us eager folks the theme now. . . . Y'know. . . to percolate. Ahem.

I'd suggest putting the theme out now and consider a three month cycle instead of the two month cycle.

I don't think I can submit, but will read and vote. :)

Couldn't you rotate between the short story comp one month and the flash fiction the other?

You mean for people as a personal choice, or the running of the contest itself?

For running the contest? Do the FF one month whilst prepping the short story then do the actual short story comp the following month. Or have the same theme for both which would make it easier to do them one after the other.

Seems as if those who are really comfortable with the flash fiction cycle would be required to reacclimate themselves which could conceivably reduce participation. Recommend maintaining the FF cycle as it is and implementing the two month cycle for the short stories.
Further recommend you cease your cogitations, make a decision, and do something.

Agreed -- entrants will have to be responsible for managing their own workload. This is intended to run separately from the Flash Fic.

I'll be posting the contest soon. Just a few details to be hashed out on the new "Stories" sub-forum. ;)
