Song Of The Day

A little bit of Belfast Billy Joel.

Have you ever listened to Patti Scialfa? Only two cds in many years, but man is she sultry. She's Springsteen's wife, ex-wife to be I think.

Listen to 23rd Street Lullaby

From the E Street Band to the 23rd Lullaby? I sense a pattern here. And from what I've heard on the BOS's albums, I'm not a fan. Is her solo "art" that much different?

Sorry to say, Juzzza, that the Great Firewall of China just blocked my access to that link. But speaking of Brits, a friend of mine recently introduced me to The Kooks, and I'm down with their style. Punk beats, but with a nice organic acoustic quality. Are you familiar with them?

No similarities at all between Patti's music and Bruce's.

None.

You should listen to a few songs. Personally, I love her voice. No tricks. Simple, melodic, nice mellow vibrato. And her songs are all about relationships and situations that for some reason I seem to relate to when I listen. Lots of heart, lots of soul. Don't write her off because of the company she kept! We all have some tenuous relationships.

Lol!

I'm saying that I will write her off for hangin' with the BOSs, I'm just saying I was never too impressed with her backup vocals. That says nothing about giving her a shot. I mean, Christ, I'm so starved for music these days that I'll taste anything.

As for Bruce, what've you got against him? I've always enjoyed his work, his "Ghost of Tom Joad" album, especially.

I have nothing against him. I like his music, particularly The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Suffle. He's just never been a true favorite of mine in general, but I do listen to him. Philadelphia was a brilliant song.

Never listended to the Kooks. Your description sounds like Rancid. Now they're one of my all time favorites.

I can't say I've ever given Rancid their due, but I would certainly suggest trying out the Kooks. They're fun. Worth every second.

And I'm still trying to come up with a decent song for the day, though, for the life of me, can I think of one. Oh well. Today's only 2 hours old here. I'll come up with something new today.

Home for me is the city of Yangzhou, about four hours west of Shanghai, China. My days tend to start way early compared to the rest of the world. It's a small city of about 7 million. So small, in fact, that we don't even have a Starbucks' yet!

It's saturday morning, I'm still in bed and I am determined to be optimistic today despite still feeling rough. So today's choice is a little unusual...

Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalances.

With three hours left to the day, I finally came up with a SotD:

"Stash" by Phish, a classic high-intensity tune from their RIFT cd.

Well, my song's not so optimistic, though it doesn't reflect anything personal going on in my life. It's just a great song that did get me through some hard times quite a few years ago.

An odd choice for me it may seem, but not really:

Carly Simon, We're So Close from the album Spy:

I've lived in all of the houses he's built
The one in the air
The one underground
The one on the water
The one in the sand
He says: It doesn't matter how we live
He says: It doesn't matter where we live
We're so close we can dispense with houses
We don't need a home at all

It's come to be a habit with me to dine alone
You're never home
And the evenings end so early
He says: we can be close from afar
He says: the closest people always are
We're so close that in our separation,
There's no distance at all.

Sometimes I go out to the car,
Turn on the headlights
Intending to leave-
Sometimes I need to hear the words,
My imagination's not as strong as you'd believe-
But I've talked to you;
You haven't listened at all.
I've said I'm numb,
I can't even cry,
I'm stuck with acting out a part.
He says: what do words ever reveal?
He says: in speaking one can be so false-
We're so close we have a silent language,
We don't need words at all.

There's a husky voice
That speaks to me in the dark
And on the phone from studios
And Westside bars,
Through tunnels of long distance.
He says: we're beyond flowers
He says: We're beyond compliments-
We're so close we can dispense with love
We don't need love at all.

Just 'cause it's Sunday doesn't mean we don't listen to music!

Song of the day:

Ryan Adams, When Will You Come Back Home from Cold Roses.

Ooh Ryan Adams. Good choice again!

For me Sunday shall henceforth be Classical day and I shall pick...

Nefeli by Ludovico Einaudi, a stunning short piano piece. I heard it on the radio and the same day bought the score and started to learn to play it.

You? A dandy? I don't see it.

We Americans don't ever use that word. Toff. Very British.

I'm not sure they're quite synonymous, a dandy has foppish inclinations that don't quite work with me. A toff would sit in a leather chair in the library, drinking cognac and listening to classical music, a dandy would do it whilst wearing a silk smoking jacket... :D

I don't have a silk smoking jacket btw.

Honest

As I said, we don't use the word here often.

Library, Cognac, Classical Music.

Sounds toffish to me.
