I don't suppose anyone has heard anything new about it? I checked up on it a few months back, but there was no news.

A couple of years back, a girl I know went to a reading/booksigning event with Melanie Rawn. According to her, when it was Rawn's turn to do a reading, she just talked about her experiences with depression instead. A guy in the audience asked when Captal's Tower was coming out, and Rawn got really mad and stopped answering questions.

Admittedly that's both old information and secondhand, so I don't know how accurate it would be today, but it seems like Rawn's focusing on her new urban fantasy series and doesn't have any intention of closing the Exiles trilogy soon or maybe ever. Which is unfortunate, since I liked her Dragon Prince books but felt her newer stuff just doesn't compare. I haven't read the Exiles books because I'd like to have some belief the story will someday end, and from what I can tell that doesn't look like it'll happen.
 
I agree. All the bits and pieces of information I have doesn't give me much hope the she will ever finish Exiles. It is indeed unfortunate. I liked Dragon Prince and Dragon Star as well, and thought that the first two books in Exiles were better still. Even sadder, none of the stuff she's writing instead of Captal's Tower interests me in the least.

How does it compare to her Dragon books? I read both trilogies and wasn't that impressed.
 
The style is similar - large cast, good character development, complex intrigue, strong women, melodramatic at times. The initial concept is better, IMO, and her writing is improved.

So I guess the question of whether you would like Exiles depends on what aspect of her earlier works you weren't impressed with.

As my discussion with Cranky alludes to, however, it is becoming less and less likely that the series will ever get finished. So even if you think you might like it, I wouldn't suggest starting it unless and until Rawn changes direction and wraps it up.

Yes I know I shouldn't have put the last one on there since we've only seen the first book in the series. I almost just put A Song of Ice and Fire but then I thought about it, and couldn't put that on there when I like Rothfuss better *shrugs*.
