TV Series or Show You're Watching

Made two seasons, which I have both of on DVD to watch. I could stall again - that's about 24 hours of watching! - but at the moment I'm sticking with them. Rather unremittingly bleak, though.

I blush (given the current political situation) to admit to being a Yank. Now retired and living on the mid-Coast of Maine; though I spent a large chunk of my working life as a cargo pilot flying out of Stanstead near London in the 70s and 80s and I was crew-based around much of the world fo one to 3-year deployments I guess I am more of a world citizen than most folks did not move around so much in their working lives.

Any way; using a VPN to fool the tools that work to restrict content to a specific nation or region of the world is something I have been doing for a long time all the way back to the days of dialup connections to BBS in the 1970s and pre Worldwide Web providers like the $ource (TCD 457) and Compu$erve (72405,32) in the 80s.
 
Oh that's really weird. I could have sworn you said you were in the UK. Well, stay safe then; it's dangerous over there right now, as you no doubt know, and not just with Coronavirus! Discovery being an American-made show I can't see how they would restrict it for you: it's usually us that get the restrictions, since American copyright seemingly doesn't apply to outside the US or something. Well, if you want me to get you the episodes let me know, or as I say, try it without VPN, though now I'm not sure.
 
If it helps, Westy, I have family who swear by NordVPN . Might be worth a try?
 
I personally found Nord and Express VPN decreased my broadband speed so badly that I couldn't use either. And I had paid for one (running out soon, thank god!) so was stuck with a useless product I was being charged for. The one built in to Opera browser works very well, and is free. It, too, slows things down but not as badly as any of the big names. Just my experience.

Kidding, you probably mean Book, played by David Ajala. I personally can’t get over him playing Roy Eris on the Nightflyers SF/horror series.

Watched the movie length pilot episode. I quite liked it. Metacritic scores a bit over 50%, although the later series 2 and 3 score higher.
 
Yeah I need to watch that too, if only to see how Costner has aged.

Started watching The Third Day. I stopped on the second episode, can't honestly say if I'm going to go for the third (geddit?) - I found it more annoying than anything, kind of a rip-off of the likes of Children of the Corn crossed with The Green Man. Maybe it'll get better. Maybe I'll give it a chance. Maybe I won't. I don't know. The immense drag factor of having Jude Law in it is almost - almost - counterbalanced by the presence of Paddy Considine, but his character is so bloody annoying (he keeps saying things like "what the flip" and "get the flip out of here", which just sound, well, ludicrous) that I don't know if it's compensation enough. It's got good reviews, but then again, one of them was for "beautifully shot"! I don't want to watch a show based on how beautiful it looks, if that's the best they can say of it.

Just about to finish Collateral, a BBC 4-part political drama. Not bad. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to recommend it, but I wouldn't advise anyone not to watch it.

Yeah I lost interest after the third episode.
 
I'm still debating whether to give it a shot. Oh wait: the new season of Billions has started, so sod that. I'll watch that instead.
 
I'll be watching "The Victory of Hope Over Experience" tonight. Or "Lies, Damn Lies & Statistics."
AKA, the US Presidential Deate.

Friend of mine has seen the whole series and says that it's his favourite of the year so far.... am quite tempted to watch as a result.

Rattled through Season One of Carnvale. Now debating whether to launch into Season Two straight away or give it a break and try something else, then go back.
 
Carnivale is hard going. The only other series I remember which was as unremittingly bleak without a real break was Millennium.

Decided to can The Third Day, deleted it. Just wasn't interested enough and despite all the accolades I couldn't see myself looking forward to watching it, always a red flag. Now I'm watching season 5 of Billions. I love this show - the two (three really; Maggie Saff is indispensable) leads are wonderful and really spark off each other. My only complaint is that it's a bit Wall Street, as in, it doesn't explain the details behind high finance in a clear way so that you know what's going on, but put up against that I would argue that the story moves along pretty well without too much reference to the mechanics of finance, so even if you're lost in the figures (like me) you can still enjoy the show.
 
Very bleak, which I think is what put me off a little. Had the DVDs for years... but they seem appropriate in these times, and they tap into my Ray Bradbury/Halloween vibe. But 12 hours of unremitting bleakness may be enough for anyone.

Millennium is one of my favourite series of all time, despite some of the weirdness that was going on with the production at the time. It includes an episode that actually made me squeak out loud when I first watched it (For the record, I don't usually squeak. At all.)

Watched the second episode of Discovery yesterday, which wanted to be Firefly, but I enjoyed.
 
Yeah I think the problem with Millennium, for me anyway, was there wasn't even the slightest shred of comic relief or even light relief in it. I know it's about kind of the coming of the end of the world, cults and all that, but it's really hard to watch something so totally dark without the slightest chink of light. It's like watching Nineteen Eighty-Four over and over and over again. I don't ever remember watching any series as dark. DVD boxsets should have come with a free razor and blades... :eek:
 
I love Ken Burns. His documentaries on Prohibition, the Vietnam War and World War II were exceptional, and now I'm watching a four-part series on the Dust Bowl, America's first real natural ecological disaster which almost wiped out the American Midwest in the 1930s. It's harrowing stuff, but well worth seeing.
 
I find Ken Burns old-style documentary making - and that's a good thing, in my opinion. Impeccably researched, remarkably balanced, thoughtful, intelligent. There's no summary every ten minutes of what they've just said, no fake emotions on show, no celebrities making vacuous comments - instead, the viewer is presented with the information and is allowed to join the dots themselves.

Any series he makes is worth spending time with. The Vietnam & Civil War series were superb. I haven't seen the Dust Bowl series but it looks like it might make an interesting accompaniment to the Carnivale series, which is set in 1934. Thanks, TH.
