TV Series or Show You're Watching

Right now also looking at Seaside Hotel (PBS Passport)
Suggestions?

Since you mention PBS Passport, you might want to check out Hotel Portifino, which is set in Italy in the 1920’s. It’s a story about an English couple who open a resort hotel, and they, the staff, guests, and locals all supply the storyline. Beautiful scenery (filmed in Croatia and Italy), great period piece, an excellent costume drama.

I also enjoyed Ridley, which is about a “retired” police detective in the UK who is still called in from time to time to aid in investigations. It’s a modern police drama set in the present.

Enjoyed the first episode of Monarch a great deal - better than the recent US movies, anyway. Second episode a little slower, but OK. A little worried about streaming bloat creeping in, though.

I’m liking Kurt Russel a lot in this series! The overall storyline is interesting as it is more about the people than the monsters. Overall, I like it more than I expected to…

Started a new series (for us anyway). A 2014, 3 season series remake of the 3 Musketeers by PBS. Found it on Prime. The settings, sets, the equipment, weapons and the overall feel of the show makes for a pretty gritty (good) historical series.

I also like that the Musketeers themselves seem to be in character for the story. I've watched a couple of Hollywood interpretations in past years that just seemed like a YA adaption with teen heroes. Never lasted more than 1 or 2 before moving on.

We're liking it quite a bit so far, PD

Also, the guy that plays Cardinal Richlieu could be Hugh Laurie's brother.:)

First one we watched we thought it was Laurie. Had to go check, lol.

I found an old series with the best list of guest stars imaginable. The regulars are also unique in their diversity.

Zero Mostel, John Cleese, Julie Andrews, Vincent Price, Madeline Kahn, Gilda Radner, Raquel Welch, Steve Martin, Peter Sellers - and the list goes on. Perfect before bed relaxation.

Watched The Three Musketeers D'Artagnan, the first part of the new Musketeer duology (not sure if it counts as a TV series or movie but these days there is no clear-cut distinction anyway), mostly because Eva Green of James Bond fame plays Milady; it was better than I expected as while of course it has the usual modern sensibilities changes from the original material, it kept the spirit of the original fairly well imho.

(the three season series mentioned above was imho a disaster at least for big fans of the original Dumas novels like myself and unwatchable after a while, but I guess it may be entertaining if one can just divorce it from the books)

The second part The Three Musketeers Milady will be released in mid-December or so and I plan to watch it at some point.

Also after watching a trailer of the new movie Napoleon, rewatched the 2002 mini-series Napoleon with C Clavier as Napoleon and its all-star cast (Gerard Depardieu, John Malkovich, Isabella Rosellini, Julian Sands etc) which made me even less inclined to see the new version at least for now... Modern values production do not trump star power and although Gladiator made Joaquin Phoenix famous, I have never been a huge fan of him and I would take Depardieu or Malkovich anytime in a movie

Talking of rehashing stuff, heard that a new miniseries of Shogun is to make its debut in February 2024 and will take a look and see if it can compare with the original Richard Chamberlain Toshiro Mifune spectacle of 1980 which is one of the all-time classics of TV imho - again do not have high hopes that the modern production values can match the star power of Chamberlain and Mifune but will see

It’s Peter Capaldi! The 12th Doctor from Doctor Who, plus he plays a number of roles in a lot of other British TV.

Finished this most excellent BBC series last night. The sets, armor, horses & sword fighting made for a surprisingly realistic world. A great ending to a fantastic story. Even if the "French" Musketeers all sound like Brits :)

I do wish this had lasted longer than 3 seasons. Chalk this one up to one of the best series we've seen in years.

Can anyone else recommend a good historical period series?

The_Haunting_of_Hill_House.jpg

Just started watching the 2018 Netflix version of The Haunting of Hill House which is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. I have to admit I haven’t read that one…

The show has got the creepy ghosts part nailed. It’s certainly atmospheric and gothic. The only thing that is slightly disconcerting is the constant jumping back and forth from the present to 1992 when the family fled the house.

I’m two episodes in, and it’s good so far…

Loved The Haunting of Hill House!

I'm halfway through season 4 of Babylon Berlin, which is one of, if not the, best shows ever. The epic recreation of Berlin in the 1920s/1930s, the story, the characters and acting are all faultless. In short, it's terrific.

(The first three seasons are on Netflix, but season four did not come out here in Australia, so I ended up buying the DVD)

All Creatures Great and Small. Season 4: Episodes 1-3. The rest of season 4 of this new filming has yet to be released in the US. (PBS)
Interestingly (to me) is that in spite of the general presentation of Siegfried Farnham as an eccentric, difficult taskmaster, it is fact gentler than the actual person who he is based on, ( Donald Sinclair) who once fired a shotgun in his house to let guests know that it was time to leave.
Funny and, to put it mildly, heartwarming. If you have any affection, whatsoever, for bucolic characters, hugely watchable.

BoySwallowsUniverseSeriesPoster.jpg

Watched Boy Swallows Universe on Netflix - an excellent coming of age story set in suburban Brisbane (where I live!), when a local criminal threatens the family. Great acting, and a realistic feel of living in the 80's (in a lower socio-economic area).

Also watching True Detective Season 4 - very strong The Thing vibes about it. It's good; I like the isolated, cold Alaskan setting.
