Voting Thread - May Flash Fiction (Overwhelmed)

I voted for this one: VictorK - The Limits of Magic.

I liked the setting and, for me, it is a complete story. The writing is clear and gives me a sense of a larger world. Good job!

Hey, ya know.....was thinking about the voting and getting votes and etc. as someone mentioned getting/needing more votes for both for this and the other monthly contests.

As it stands at least from my perspective and participation the last few months or so it would be nice to not be so incestuous and get some readers and votes beyond the participants. I know there are sometimes a few non-participant votes, but what I was thinking is if we could get more of the forum readers to read and vote on the stories it might be more interesting.

What if we put a notice in the other subforums - SF, Fantasy and/or General reading/discussion when the poll/voting thread goes up to encourage others (e.g. non-participants) to read and vote?

It's been tried before.

The fact is most folks do not want to read, um, how shall I say this, amateur writing. Plus, folks come here to discuss the books they are reading, not to read short fiction. Thems just the breaks.

I see. Thanks. Didn't know if/that it had been tried. :(

ETA: Thinking about this as I took my walk just now.....Cold slap of reality in the face, eh? Makes me rethink/reconsider what I'm doing.....:(

Also reminds me of a Sherman Alexi story I (re)read yesterday - Idolatry. It's a flash of only 144 words but packs a punch. Would share a link, but I'm not finding it on line. I read it in Flash Fiction International.

Possibly my fault for giving everyone just one vote rather than the normal two.

It does show how diverse our interests and tastes are - a reminder that there's always someone for whom your work will resonate.

Arm-wrestling, surely? Though I'm so bad at it that Winnie the Pooh could beat me. Call me Wusstopher Robin...

We've still got until the 31st, so two days to go, if it's still tied then, I'll arrange a speedy walk-off - I mean vote-off!

JonLaidlow's story is my winner this month. I'm just a sucker (no pun intended) for Lovecraftian water-kind.

Jonlaidlow gets my vote. It's just a fine story.

Bodhi gets a very well deserved runner-up not-real-vote. I thought both stories were good, but Jon's was more complete.

I can see the point of bringing in more blood, and I wear my 'amateur hobbyist' badge with pride. A lot of this is just style: I am interested in telling the same sorts of stories that Jon tells, and I think we have similar instincts in terms of how much to leave to the reader and in how to pace our stories. Naturally, I gravitate towards his stories. They have consistently been my favorites in the three months I've been participating in this contest. No one in this contest should have to cater towards my tastes, as it's not even clear that they're good tastes. But, it does get a bit incestuous.

At the end of the day, voting is just the incentive to participate. Winning is fun and getting votes feels good, but the commentary is really why we're here, I think. A real critique feels better than both. I apologize for not being as in depth as I normally would like to be, May has been a very busy month, as my last minute votes show.

Thanks to all who voted for my story. I hope to revisit that fantasy setting in the future.

Show us how it's done JL! You came in at the end and finished strong.
