Thenk you for the interest to my topic.I will
never start to reed Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Somebody think him for the
best fantasy author, but I don't think so.
Maybe Eye of the World is realy good book,
but others...I think that he must start new series. What you think?

Well, I know that I will probably never read any more of David Edding's works because after the big letdown and bore I got with the Belgariad, any other fantasy book with his name printed on it, I won't trust to be very interesting. I won't read the Harry Potter books because they are for younger readers. I probably won't read books written by Martin, Goodkind, Anne Bishop, or Hamilton because they obtain sexually explicit material which I find to be offensive. I don't really plan to read any over-romantic or girlish fantasy books. Nor will I read any fantasy books written by Christian fundamentalist activists who preach in their fantasy novels that magic in fantasy is "evil" and that TSR is a satanic corporation, and offer their books as an alternative for other fantasy that they lambast ruthlessly. I mean, I'm a Christian myself, and I love reading sword & sorcery fantasy books and I find nothing wrong or satanic about them. I am also a loyal supporter and fan of TSR. That's my list of fantasy books I will not read.

I will not read any Ron L. Hubbard books, he is just preaching his way out religion, in a subliminal way, and expounding his idealogies.

I will never read David Eddings. I have seen very few good things about his writing, especially by people who seem to share my tastes in writers/books.

HOWEVER just to dissuade dennizm and Zsinj16, I will say this.

Harry Potter is NOT just for kids. I would like to consider myself an adult and I read all four books and JK Rowling REALLY does a nice job of NOT dumbing it down for kids. If the HP books can help Stephen King (my fav. auth.) get through a near death accident, then thats also good by me.

I read Battlefield Earth and was pleasantly surprised. Though not a masterpiece, I personally did not get any thing religously preachy from the book.

Then again, I just became a Scientologist (j/k, I'm really agnostic, if anything)

"I probably won't read books written by Martin" Zsinj16

You really are missing out on the best Fantasy around right now. But it's you choice.

Zsinj16, I respect your decision not to read George R.R. Martin, but I must agree with Metosblat that you are really missing something special. I guess I'm not really offended by depictions of sex and violence as you appear to be. What I like about Martin is that he is trying to paint a fairly accurate picture of what medieval life may have been like. Most fantasy I've read is hoplessly naive in that sexuality doesn't seem to exist. Martin doesn't believe is protecting the reader from anything. And I like that.

Anyway,I hope you can someday bring yourself to read ASoIaF.

As for books I'll never read, I'm not sure of the titles, (I think one is Time Code, not real sure) but there is a series of Christian/SciFi/Fantasy books out that I'll never read. (The have black borders, kinda like a letterbox movie, top and bottom, lots of color in the middle around the title.)

I've got nothing against christians, or christians scifi/fantasy books, but it's not my bag. I think it's a great approach for them to get their ideals across, and changing the pace a little from the usual Sunday/Sermon approach.

I don't think there is a book out there that I will not pick up and attempt to read. I think that this idea may have stemmed from the fact that I am a history major and I have to read some of the most boring stuff in the world. If I can read that stuff, then I can read anything. I have read everything from christian contemporary literature to atheistic works. I have also read books written by racists along with Martin Luther King Jr. books. I have read fantasy and science fiction, also fiction and non-fiction. I don't think there is anything that I won't read.

Terry Pratchett books. I find the Idea of a world on the back of a giant turtle shell a bit too far fetched to give it the time of day.

You're denying yourself a huge amount of fun by refusing to read Terry Pratchett - I think he's fantastic. The new book, 'Thief of Time' is due out on May 1st, and I can't wait. I'm curious though - a world perched on the back of a giant turtle is too far fetched - as opposed to the rest of the fantasy genre? I don't know about you but thats why I read fantasy, for the escapism and the suspension of disbelief!

Authors i won't read.
Terry Pratchett, i read like 3 books of his, all had low slapstick humor that didn't make me laugh. Good Omens was good but i blame that on Gaiman.

David Eddings - i read the belgariad and the malloreon, nothing new can come from him.

Others that are just too boring or too ridicilous, Terry Goodkind, Melanie Rawn, Lyn Flewlling.

Just checked this forum and Zsinj16 you are missing out on some good books especially Martin and Hamilton, as for being sexually explicit its a couple of pages of soft core sex. If you get offended by this what century are you living in?
All you have to do is skip past the section which offends you and read on.
Im also curious how old you are?
ANyway dont read Pratchett as he is terrible so is the Liveship series by Hobb

Okay I have two things to say, one to Rhaegar, and one to Demandred. Rhaegar, I may be offended by explicit sex, but I'm not offended by violence at all, unless someone does something really nasty such as cuts somone's balls off and plays around with them. I think violence in battle and wars and fighting is perfectly acceptable. I mean, I watched the movie The Patriot for Pete's sake, and I am happy to say that none of the violence or decapitations bothered me one inkling.
Demandred, regarding what you said, well, I think you were being a bit rude don't you? I mean as long as I've been here, all the members of this board have respected my opinions, why can't you? I'm very well living in the 21st century, thank you and I'm 18 years old. I'm not offended by as many sexual scenes as you seem to think I am. I find it perfectly acceptable in fantasy books to see a man and woman kissing and embracing in bed, it doesn't even bother me if their naked, as long as it doesn't get too explicit like describing a woman's sexual organs or a man's sexual organs. I tihnk reading about their emotions is fine too, as well, as long as it doesn't get too erotic in description. I don't mind sexually suggestive parts either, those parts don't bother me one bit. The only thnig that would bother me about a couple kissing and embracing in bed would be if it were two men or two women together. I also don't like descriptions of sodomy or incest in fantasy books, neither would I care for descriptions of homosexuality. That's how I basically feel on this subject. Maybe someday I will try Martin, and skip past the bad parts, but as for now, I have tons of fantasy books I'm planning on reading other than Martin.

I won't read another book by Melanie Rawn, it's so boring and Ann Mcaffrey (read two books by her and found it terrible) I can't stand Isaac Asimov, he's a real patriarch. I won't read hard core science fiction, especially if it's outdated. What the hack, most of the science fiction of the fifties and sixties is horrible. Can't stand bad cyberpunk books. Didn't like Gibson as well.Douglas Adams - I hate his books. Never finished a book by Pratchet although my brother is a huge fan and keeps on giving me books. Maybe I'll give him another try after I saw the drama version of Mort, which was very funny.
The worst books are by John Norman and his disgusting Gor-series. Zsinj16 avoid these at all costs. Worst male sexual fantasy I ever read.
Puh, quite a list it seems.
By the way: I read battlefield earth as well, didn't know Hubbard was a cult leader. I found it quite funny, not at all religiuos.

Anything by Robert Heinlein- There's just something about his writing style that rubs me the wrong way. I hate all his characters, especially when it appears they're intended to be witty or funny. He also has away of putting his opinions and views of the world into his books which I find utterly obnoxious. I've tried a few of his books and each one irritated me more than the last.

R. A. Salvatore. I liked the Dark Elf books but after having read the Cleric Quintet I won't bother with him again. The last book in the series, The Chaos Curse was incredibly bad, even for Forgotten Realms standards.

Terry Brooks. IMHO Dull, unoriginal and flat. I've read worse but I can't be bothered reading any more of his stuff after the original Shannara books.

Cannon Fodder:

You might want to give R. A. Salvatore's newer non-TSR books a look. The DemonWars Trilogy, Mortalis and his Star Wars novel Vector Prime are much better than his TSR novels.

Grrr!...
You all accuse fantasy of this and that, but, if you hate fantasy so much, why the heck you read this stuff?!
It's ok to judge and criticize something, but this...?
I don't know!... Sorry, if I'm being offensive to anyone; I just opened this topic, read all the posts, and something hit me in the head!...

It didn't give you a concussion, did it? Is that why you're so ticked, Bardos?

Maybe you should go see a doctor about that bump on your head! LOL
