What comics are you all reading? What do you think?

Read the first three issues of Space Riders by Alexis Ziritt and Fabian Rangel from Black Mask Studios and really enjoyed it. The art has this really cool psychedelic quality especially the coloring just insanely cool. The premise is basically a disgraced space captain gets a second chance to redeem himself. He flies around in his space ship shaped like a skull and is joined by his first mate who is an anthropomorphic baboon and a female robot. From what I've read about it online it's only a four issue miniseries.

I'm really enjoying Image Comics' Revival and it's quickly become one of my current favorite Image titles. As a huge fan of the horror genre I find it refreshingly imaginative and genuinely disturbing. The Jenny Frison cover artwork is gorgeous. Mike Norton does a great job with the interior artwork and Tim Seeley's character work and plot are interesting. I would really like to see it picked up as a TV series.

I picked up Death Head #1 on a whim because I liked the cover and thought it was pretty interesting. It involves multiple sets of characters in different settings; a husband and wife couple hiking in the woods come across and eerie abandoned town not on their map; a boy is forced into the sewers by bullies and a rebellious girl at a boarding school. Really curious to where its going and how the characters will interconnect if at all.

I've been enjoying the Infinity Gauntlet miniseries for Marvel's Secret Wars. I'm a fan of the Nova Corps, Star-Lord and Thanos, so it was pretty much impossible to go wrong, but I love the art work, the fact most of the main characters are unknowns, and the post-apocalyptic (or post-annihilation!) setting! Probably my favourite of the Secret Wars books so far other than Secret Wars itself!

I've been catching up on Big Trouble in Little China. It's one of my favourite films and this series picks up right where the film left off. Co-written by John Carpenter it's as close to a sequel as you can get.

Not much of a comics reader, but recently read season 8 Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Still not the same as the show.

Picked up the third installment of Planet Hulk over the weekend. I'm enjoying the series, although I felt like it was losing its way a little - we've had 2 issues of travelling now which, considering this is a 4 issue series, is not necessarily how I would have handled things. (Harry Potter 7's everlasting tent sequence springs to mind!)

I just bought Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Seconds is a graphic novel by Bryan Lee O'Malley.[1][2] Published on July 15, 2014 by Ballantine Books, the novel tells the story of Katie, head chef at a prospering restaurant named Seconds, who obtains the ability to fix her past mistakes by writing them down in a notebook, eating a mushroom, and falling asleep. Abusing the power to make her life perfect, Katie ends up creating more problems for herself.

I never read Scott Pilgrim, just liked the movie. This was a pretty good read. I enjoyed the shape/size of the book. I liked the non-shiny but solid paper and the coloring approach, which I wasn’t focused on based upon flipping through some Scott Pilgrim. It’s a cartoonier book than I usually buy, but the art is solid and I liked the writing. A decent character piece with a nice sense of humor. Give it a flip through if it sounds like something you’d like.

I’m still enjoying Trees - Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive. Beginning a new science fiction graphic novel by WARREN ELLIS and JASON HOWARD.

Interesting potpourri of characters all investigating or affected personally by the Trees.

Still digging Low, another scifi series. I mentioned it earlier. Greg Tocchini’s art is just ridiculously good. His Blog - http://gregtocchini.blogspot.com/

I have the next Casanova but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I just love the series, though so I find it hard to see how I’ll dislike it. James Bond meets Sliders meets Twin Peaks would be my best shorthand.


Digging young/light revamping of Batgirl (starting with issue #35, currently #42 and Black Canary and Gotham Academy, just finished #8 and it is still good. They seem to have a very similar vibe to each other and still fun.

Nearly all of the Secret Wars books seem to have been taking a bit of a downward turn lately, which is a big shame. I'm still enjoying Infinity Gauntlet, although it would have been great to focus on the Thanos/Nova Corps interaction rather than introducing Groot (seemingly needlessly) near the end of the book! Looking forward to seeing what issue 4 brings.

That's a great cover. I don't know anything about it, but the pairing of the normal humans with Thanos and those backgrounds. Pretty darn cool.

I'm not really into comics and when I do read them, I tend to go with creator-owned, but I recently dipped into Injustice: Gods Among Us and the new Ms. Marvel (based on the Hugo win).

I thought that Injustice was extremely stupid, but also a lot of fun and kind of addicting. I was often more intrigued by who would be murdered next than how the story would unfold.

Ms. Marvel was OK. The interesting family dynamic faded into the background rather quick and the story from there was pretty predictable. I like that Kamala's first villain was ridiculous and I enjoyed her interaction with other heroes, but overall... yeah, kind of meh.

Read the first two issues of The Beauty I thought they were pretty interesting. It's basically a detective crime procedural in a world where an STD called The Beauty runs rampant because it causes people to become more attractive. When one of the infected spontaneously combusts on a subway it is brought to the attention of two homicide detectives who are immediately blocked by the CDC and later discover a coverup while one of them becomes infected.

I collect Marvel Dark Tower Gunslinger comics. I have the first set of hardcover collections plus the One Shots and I enjoy them, the artwork is good and the writing is a decent version of the content from the original novels. The Battle of Jericho Hill artwork was especially good.

Read all four issues of Shattered Empire the other night and it was oh so refreshing to read great Star Wars again. Its part of the new cannon and explains some what the Rebels are up to after the destruction of the second Death Star. Some covert missions with Han Solo, diplomatic escort missions with Leia, and awesome jedi action with Luke. It follows the parents of Poe, who is apparently a big deal in the upcoming movie. The first issue did a great job with the action and drew me right in. The following issues lost their luster, but the great writing and authentic characters kept me hooked. I approve.

Read all four issues of Shattered Empire the other night...

I caught a preview of this on Imgur, and I'm glad it's as every bit as good as that preview suggested. I'll have to find these and add them to the collection. These are quite simply breath taking.

For me:
I've been catching up on Deadpool's 97' run. When I first got my hands on him, I was still "too youthful" in my mom's eyes. She was already displeased with me reading comics (for whatever reason), and was even less thrilled when a character like Deadpool ran around yelling "BOOOOBIES!".

I also just found Issue 0 of Fathom at a comic shop for a dollar, and I rounded up some of the newer Blue Beetle issues, 3-6. I'll have to leverage the internet to collect the others I suspect.

The Batman one was part of the series where Bane breaks his back, and it was showing the master mind that Bane is as he sets up all these traps for Batman throughout Gotham. Excalibur was about Prof. X from the X-men teaming up with rogue mutants to get back at the humans after they totally nuked Genosha. Not cool. But of course, the one that takes the cake is KOTOR. Hands down best graphic novel series I've ever read, and as I go back through the issues I don't refute that one bit.

I used to love Excalibur whenever Alan Davis drew it - did you get any of those issues, or was it the more recent relaunches?

My favourite of Dark Horses's Star Wars titles was Legacy but I've just realised I haven't read the ending yet!

I've just started Wolf by Ales Kot and Matt Taylor, which has maybe one of the nicest covers I've ever seen. Really good so far! A lot of complexity in panel composition and page structure. And it has really nice drawings of everyday L.A. neighborhoods.

Then, I've also just finished the first volume of Paper Girls, which is a load of fun!
