What games are you playing?

Aside from indie developers, that's pretty much standard business practice for everyone in the game industry.
Perhaps (although it even happens with indies, albeit on a lesser scale) - but Nintendo are far and away the worst for it. The Gamecube had four iterations of Mario Party, N64 had three - and that's just one series within the Mario-verse. Looking at this Wiki page of Mario games, it becomes painfully obvious just how much Nintendo milk that franchise.

I'm surprised they're doing as well as they are, considering their small number of franchises. Mind you, Activision are doing well on even fewer, so I suppose something has to be working.

Mario Party is done by a third party though (which aggravates me, because I would be much better at the wii one if they could work with the wiimote worth a damn)

I'm with Cule on this one Loerwyn I don't see how you can single out Nintendo. Look at Capcom. Look at EA. The internet's gone bugeyed over Skyrim and it's a fifth installment. Also you say Twilight Princess was just a repaint when it had all kinds of new mechanics going on that had never been in Zelda before but meanwhile so many of these developers churning out sequels are really just stepping up their graphics a bit and bringing nothing new to the table (and they're all milking us dry on dlc now to boot)

How is Nintendo the worst? Look at Battlefield, Call of Duty, EAs sports franchises,... Those are all (at least) yearly releases and it's pretty much the same game every time. CoD and BF are the most ridiculous, people pay full price for a couple of new MP maps and watching NPCs play the 4 hour single player campaign for them. Nintendo at least put some serious effort into their major releases and there's always something fresh about them, even if the core game stays the same.

I'm not singling out Nintendo - I don't mean to appear that way - but they are one of the worst. You can't use Skyrim as an example because it's the fifth game in a series, but in a span of almost 20 years (there were two in-house spin-offs and some mobile games, however), which isn't exactly milking, is it? That's a fairly natural cycle. Same goes for a lot of EA's properties that aren't The Sims or a sports franchise (and even that seems to have calmed down somewhat).

What I'm saying is that no firm reuses the same few franchises with the regularity and the lack of imagination that Nintendo do. You have Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros, the Mario 64-esque platformers (Galaxy now, isn't it?) and so on. Each year brings a handful of Mario games, none of which really are all that different to the one before bar the addition of some sort of defining feature. They do put out fairly high quality releases, and they do put their time, money and effort into them, but it doesn't stop them from really being just Version n+1 of the game that came before it. A few minor changes here, maybe a feature there, bam, Nintendo have a new game to sell at full price for a number of years.

As for Twilight Princess - I perhaps wasn't clear. Yeah, they added new features and stuff, but it really was like a new version of Ocarina of Time. The map was largely the same (albeit moved around a bit, updated and so on), the whole Link-has-two-forms thing (Young & Adult in OoT, Human & Wolf in TP) - I did thoroughly enjoy it, as I have many of the 3D Zelda games I've played, but it still... felt like OoT in a way.

Battlefield has two franchises - Bad Company and Battlefield itself. Bad Company has had two versions - one in 2008 and one in 2010. Battlefield 2 came out in 2005, Battlefield 3 in 2011. So no, not being milked. Call of Duty is being milked. Yearly releases with additional content, and the game is sold at a higher-than-average price. Either way, they're games made for a multiplayer audience (hence the short SP campaigns). I'm not saying the DLC isn't overpriced - it is, more so for CoD than BF - but it's really not as bad as you're suggesting.

I get what you are saying but I have never felt robbed by a Zelda game, not even close (although I did skip Majora's Mask, but I heard that one was pretty awesome all the same from people who did play it). I don't mind them churning out games as long as they are good. I'm a couple hours into Skyward Sword and so far it's pretty good, I'm deliberately avoiding anything that might say something about what the game entails so everything will be a surprise and it's very enjoyable so far. The sword feels REALLY good.

See, that's the thing. If you pick up a Nintendo game, chances are you're going to enjoy it and get your money's worth from it, but I still think they're a fairly lazy group when it comes to really innovating and pushing the boundaries of games.

Presently playing Skyrim and loving it. I am a level 18 Companion and have been enjoying but not fully understanding smithing. I am playing the game different than I did Morrowind or Oblivion by not becoming a battlemage although I am wanting to learn more magic for some of the creatures. I am also starting to get more into alchemy, which I ignored before because I thought it would be more difficult. Skyrim has made it more necessary by not supplying a lot of health potions at Whiterun.:D

I am also stalled on Darksiders by the giant teleporting boss spider.:(

Splitting my time between the new Zelda and Mass Effect. I got both Mass Effect games dirt cheap on a Steam sale and I find ME to be pretty damn brilliant. The 80's sci-fi style soundtrack is a stroke of genius. Looking forward to rolling through this and hopefully the second one in time for the third to be out (and on sale maybe if it takes awhile :D)

Zelda games may be sort of formulaic, you sort of know what to expect, but the same can be said of a La-Z-Boy and sometimes that wonderful exquisite comfort is just what the doctor ordered. Playing Skyward Sword is like putting on your most comfortable pair of shoes and walking someplace new in them.

What don't you understand about smithing, Gkarlives? Maybe we can help.

Nothing to bad. Just trying to figure out the items to get to make useful items. I am kind of learning that it is more a means of making extra cash than of actually outfitting yourself. My skill is still low anyhow.Thanks.:D

I dunno, I think it's a great way to outfit yourself if you can get the materials. Combine it with enchanting and you can really beat a lot of what the game throws at you, or at least be more reliable with it.

Here's a tip I got from my dad - buy all the iron ingots/iron ore (if you're near a smelter) and leather strips you can. Mass produce Iron Daggers and you can rocket yourself through the smithing levels, but you'll also gain a few levels anyway, so it's a good way to push forward a bit.

I can guarantee you right now that Mass Effect 3 will not be on Steam. If it appears, I'll eat my scarf, but I'm 99.99% certain it won't.

GamersGate currently has ME3 up for pre-order, and the DRM is listed as "Other DRM". It's pretty much guaranteed to be Origin (Steam is listed as 'Requires a 3rd Party Activation & Download' or something similar, whereas other DRM methods are named - SecuROM, StarForce et al), and as such it won't be on Steam. Battlefield 3 also requires Origin, and that's not on Steam but is available on GamersGate with 'Other DRM' listed (i.e. Origin).

Plus there's Valve's "requirement" for DLC to also be sold through Steam, which EA don't seem particularly happy about (kinda can't blame 'em), and I would say with 99.99% certainty that it'll be handled through the BioWare Social Network (as was the case for Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2 & Mass Effect 2) rather than directly through Origin or another store, which would go against Valve's "rules" for Steam.

Ok here's a Skyrim question for people who have finished it. I just met Paarturnaxx. How close to the end of the main quest line am I? I still have a lot of other things I want to do in the game, so I don't want to rush that quest line along if there's only a few more steps. Am I about 1/2 done, less, more? Thaanxx, Phil

A bit of a change from all you RPG gamers....:D

Played and finished God of War 3. Meh. If you liked numbers 1 and 2 then you'll like 3 since it's just more of the same. Nothing new.

Now playing Resistance 3. Much better. Unfortunately, I think I'm only a an hour or so from the end but it's been a massive amount more fun than CoD: Black Ops.

EDIT: Now I'm finished R3. Still a good game but I was hoping for some unlocked challenges or something. You know - survive 50 longleg snipers or something. :(

Sorry I can't help you, phil_geo. I'm level 39, but I have barely brushed the main quest.

I thought I'd share this, because it made me laugh.

Skyrim: 2012

phil_geo - not that far from the end, only a small handful of quests on that line before the main ending.

The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom

Finished the campaign at long last. The difficulty really rockets for the final mission, which kinda sucked, but after a number of goes and a number of hours attempting it, I did it first time today. Hurrah!

I did the same with smithing. I would also enchant the daggers, so I could sell them for a lot more as well as increase enchanting.
