What games are you playing?

Bought Gat Out Of Hell in the Steam sale at the weekend. The setting is interesting, the mid-game musical number is hilarious, and flying is fun, but it mostly feels like a resprayed Saints Row 4, with far less missions and no customization. It's the only game I've played recently where I actually wished there was more story, rather than less.

I bought a WiiU last month and have been playing various games on that. Dabbled in Lego Marvel (the OH hijacked it until she got 100%), though now playing Mario Kart 8 for a bit of fun, and have started ZombiU the other night. Must say, ZombiU is a very atmospheric game and has made me jump a few times, and playing it in the dark is definitely recommended.

I just started playing Pillars of Eternity, the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and Planescape. I'm only about two hours in, but so far I'm pretty happy. Very nice writing, entertaining gameplay, good lore. I'll see what I think as things go on, but so far, no compaints.

A friend said I should play it. He did beta. Said it was up my alley. I'm waiting for a Steam sale.

I'm playing TERA, actually. It's F2P and pretty fun. The graphics are great. Avoiding it a bit this week, though, because a new class was released yesterday. It's crowded with that class and near impossible to get a party together for dungeons. Gotta wait until the shininess ends.

Still no complaints. I'm gradually grabbing time with it here and there, though I've only put about 20 hours in so far, I think. I bounce between that, Final Fantasy 14, a few roguelikes, and Crusader Kings 2 (in which I've been playing the same campaign since I built my computer 3 months ago...) So all told, not moving through anything terribly quickly, but dabbling here and there.

Finished the excellent Far Cry 4 and also the DLC Valley of the Yeti's - also very good, wished it was longer.

Also did a replay of COD Advance Warfare on veteran setting - for me this is the best in the series.

Next is a bit more Forza Horizon 2 racing!

Yeah, I play Tera on and off. As F2P MMOs go, it's quite entertaining.
I know, right? I was surprised. I thought I'd give it a try when an old guild buddy (we'd played a few different MMOs together) talked it up. He's been playing since beta. At any rate, I wasn't expecting much, and I was totally expecting it to be pay to win, but it's not at all. The only two character slots per server thing was a bit annoying, but because it's their three year anniversary shindig this month, I got some bonus slots for that last for three years. So, hey.

I tried FFIX, just like I've tried just about every FF. That's just not a franchise I can get into.

How is Crusader Kings? When I look at screenshots it reminds me of Europa Universalis. Is it anything like that?

It's a similar engine, a fair amount of information to digest. The difference is that EU is a nation simulator in which you pretty much play a country. CKII is a dynasty simulator. You take on a family and try to guide its fate through generations through marriages, alliances, war, whatever means necessary to meet your goals.

In my current game, I started with a Count who ruled Dublin and have over the course of 4 generations or so formed the Kingdom of Ireland under my family's rule. Somewhere along the way I messed up a marriage, so one of my original characters grandchildren is now King of Poland, but he rules one of the duchies right in the middle of Ireland as part of Poland. There is an upstart king on the west coast, and the Scottish king decided he hates me personally and has invaded Ireland and has a foothold in Ulster. I find it much more engaging than any of the times I tried (and failed) to play EU2 or EU3, as it's much more personal in that your following actual people with traits and desires and opinions of one another and such. In that respect, it almost works as an RPG for me (though it's definitely not).

So I guess on the surface it looks a lot the same, and it's a little spreadsheety, as are most of the Paradox grand strategy games, but once you're over the superficial stuff, the meat of it feels much different. That said, you pretty much stare at a map most of the time and the emergent stories are all in your head.

BTW, nice to see you back around the forum.

So, (kinda sorta) a cross between EU and TW. At least, I haven't played TW since TW: Rome (the first one), and I seem to remember having family members that you have to figure out to do stuff with. It sounds a lot more interesting than I originally thought. I'll definitely put it on my wishlist on Steam and wait for it to go on sale.

And thanks. :)

Lately I've been playing Guns of Icarus, Town of Salem, Besiege and TF2, in equal parts.

TF2 seems to be the game that never grows old. I won't waste time talking about it; I'm sure people are already well familiarized with Team Fortress 2, what with it being the world's #1 war-based hat simulator and all. . .

Guns of Icarus is a game that I'm surprised isn't more popular; I would have thought that a really good steampunk airship combat game would draw a bigger crowd. Been playing it for months, I've clocked about 160 hours into it. The only issue I tend to run into with it, is that my wifi router is on the main floor of my house and my pc is upstairs; sometimes the signal is weak, and if I'm piloting the ship and get disconnected, my team-mates are left to drift aimlessly into a mountain, which as it turns out, they're not terribly fond of.

Town of Salem is thoroughly hilarious. It's has pretty good entertainment value for such a simplistic game. It's basically like the board games Werewolf or Mafia; you and fourteen other players are villagers trying to root out mafia members, serial killers, witches and werewolves. The game goes through night phases and day phases, where the evil characters try to eliminate villagers, and the good characters vote on who to put on trial and have lynched.

Basically it's a game of lies and deceit, and as soon as people start dying, paranoia takes over. The second time I played, someone had convinced the entire town that I was evil and they burned me at the stake, only to find out that I was actually the town sheriff. . .

Besiege is surprisingly fun, for an early access game; It's currently seven bucks on Steam. Basically you try to built medieval contraptions using an inventory of building blocks, weaponry, propulsion systems and armour plating, then use your contraption to complete missions that usually involve destroying castles, monuments, or killing off small armies. They recently added a few more levels that were surprisingly difficult. Or maybe I'm just really bad at building stuff. Took me hours to beat the five new levels they added.

Anyway, that's what I've been playing as of late, just a handful of really cheap Steam games, all of which were well worth the money in my opinion.

Since you mentioned it, I just got an email from Humble...they have a big sale on now. CK2 and a bunch of its DLC is $24 this weekend. I'm not sure, but I think they give out steam keys for purchases there. https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/crusaderkings2collection_storefront

. . . and I am still playing Elder Scrolls Online! Deep down the rabbit hole with this game, always something to do. Got my kids hooked too, love playing with them. They are great at spotting things I should see.

So they officially announced Fallout 4 today. . . I promised myself I'd never play another Bethesda game, not after Fallout 3 consumed nearly two years of my life.

That trailer does look good, though. . .

That trailer looked amazing! I have not played any of the others but I could get into that!

Bethesda is welcome to take over my life any time.

EDIT: Except when they simplify games to make them more mass marketable. I don't like it when they do that. I want a real RPG, not an action game.

I liked Skyrim, don't get me wrong, but I didn't like it as much as other games in the Elder Scrolls series. They simplified things. They made it easier to play. Like crafting and alchemy for instance. I wish they kept the leveling system for that. Also, I couldn't stand the leveling system itself. I prefer a more traditional RPG leveling system. I thought it was too slick. And it made it difficult to see everything. I liked it better when it was all on one page, so you could easily see where you wanted to go with something. Not to mention it's far more efficient than scrolling around constellations.

I'm a slick guy - must be why I loved it. I had not played earlier TES games so it was all new and shiny and big, so so big. I did not realize how open a game could be till I played it. It is the game I will compare every other game to for a long time.
