What games are you playing?

I'm a slick guy - must be why I loved it. I had not played earlier TES games so it was all new and shiny and big, so so big. I did not realize how open a game could be till I played it. It is the game I will compare every other game to for a long time.

If Skywind ever gets launched, you should check it out. Morrowind was the best ES, in my mind. They're updating it. https://www.youtube.com/user/TESRSkywindOfficial

No, it was two before. It came out when the original Xbox was launched. Morrowind was ES3. Oblivion was ES4.

I'm still playing old-time N64 games. One of these days I may transition into the 21st Century. Here's what Jet Force Gemini looks like running on a speedy PC with Project64 1.6 emulation software. You'll need to Watch on YouTube.com with the video setting bumped up to 720p in full screen mode to get the full effect.

As you can see, the resolution of some of the old Nintendo games is greatly improved---particularly with available Project64 texture enhancement packages. The best place to get Project64 1.6.1 free---and free of malware---is Jabosoft (dot) com. Elsewhere is risky. DopeRoms is a treasure trove of free game ROMs. You've got to examine the Legend Key carefully.

Whoever made the video has sampled some of the game's slowest moments. It's actually quite compelling, once you sort things out and get further into it. Bear in mind that I've said the same thing about the N64 versions of Banjo Kazooie and Tooie, however. I'm sure opinions vary.

I'm replaying the entire ME series. This time Tali do that stupid thing. Oh the sadness/disbelief/rage I felt when that happened.

I recently bought this little indie game; a top-down shooter called Nuclear Throne. It's easily one of the hardest, most unforgiving and infuriating games I've ever played. The first two days I spent playing it ended with me ragequitting. But I'm determined to beat it. . .

The levels are randomly generated, so sometimes you spawn in and immediately you're surrounded by enemies on all sides. You don't get extra lives, and you don't get continues; if you die once, it's game over.

There's a ton of different weapons that you find throughout the game, but you won't know what they do until you fire them, and some weapons can hurt you, either from a ricochet or explosive damage; a few times I've thought, "I wonder what this gun does?", then fired it once, and blew myself up. Game over, back to the beginning.

I've played some extremely difficult games; there were plenty in the NES and SNES era that were seemingly designed to torture young children. Some older PC games as well. But right now I'm struggling to think of any that are as aggravatingly difficult as Nuclear Throne.

Not sure if I should ask it here or start a new thread, but I'm curious: What's the hardest game you've ever played?

What's the hardest game you've ever played?

I'm far from a serious gamer, so I'm answering from that perspective. Some of the early PC games were hard for me in terms of mental problem-solving: I fondly remember having my brain tied in knots by puzzles in Myst and Zork Nemesis. Many areas of Jet Force Gemini are demanding to the player's motor skills, largely due to difficult jump mechanics and the peculiar targeting system of a rare (Rare) third-person shooter game. You view the character you're controlling from a third-person perspective at all times; when you switch into targeting mode, the character becomes slightly transparent as you pan his or her weapon sights around the game environment.

The game environment is huge for the era, covering multiple planets and star ships, all crawling with swarms of hostile, heavily armed bugs intent on destroying you. They adapt, and arm and armor up as the game progresses. Fortunately you acquire a widening inventory of weapons, abilities, and tools. I'm presently having trouble with Vela. Having survived the tunnels of the planet Cerulean--some of which were left unexplored--she keeps getting herself killed in the Ichor military base. The bugs there are all carrying transparent riot shields and have nastier weapons. (BTW, a poster of the charming Vela is visible high up on the wall of a workers' quarters in another Rare game, Banjo-Tooie. I guess even enslaved worker rabbits in a video game have their pin-up idols.)

Well, today I finally did it. After clocking 32 hours into this game, I finally beat Nuclear Throne (kinda, sort of, not really.) Thankfully I looked up the end of the game a while ago; I probably would have had an aneurysm had I not already known that when you beat the final boss, it restarts you at the beginning of the game, only now it's five times harder.

I only managed to reach level three of the second run of the game before getting blown up:

It's an old one, and it was recently updated to not very good reviews, Realms of Arkania. That game is awesome, but brutal. Brutal as in tough, and that's a consensus of people who played the series when it game out in the early 90s. For instance, if you want to go into a dungeon, you need a torch. But in order to use a torch, you need oil. But in order to light the torch, you need flint. And so forth. And people in your party die, and once they die, they're gone. Forever. Great games, though, but hard to play now. I tried. Got it from GOG so I could play it (it's an old DOS game), but the movement and everything is incredibly dated and my patience was wearing thin. One day I will get the updated version, no matter the ratings, just to see, but I'll wait for a really good Steam sale. Like, 75% off or something. It's on my wishlist.

As for what I'm playing now, I just finished the entire Mass Effect trilogy again. My third or fourth playthrough. It might be 3.5, actually, 'cos I don't think I finished one of them. Anyway, I wanted to get the "perfect" ending this time. That was fun. Garrus for the win! I got the Citadel DLC for this playthrough, and that was great. I think that was the best DLC, for any game, I have ever played. Way worth the $15.

I didn't do it the other times 'cos I didn't want to have to kill all synthetics. EDI! and I worked so hard to get the Geth as people only to kill them? I always went with synthesis before.

I am now in the midst of a Dragon Age: Inquisition replay. This time as a Qunari. I chose the lower voice option for her this time around, 'cos, well, Qunari, and must say, that was a bad choice. The voice actor did not do a very good job for that voice. It falls flat and there's no emotion. She sounds like broshep. Monotone and boring. The other voice option is way better. More emotion and inflection. You actually like the character.

And I went for an Iron Bull romance for this one, and holy crap. This has to be the best (as in hilarious) romance in a video game ever. I snorted and got beer up my nose more than once. Seriously. Too awesome.

Oh, and if anyone didn't know, Origin, at least they did this weekend you would have to check if the offer is still going on, were giving $20 off any purchase over $50 with the promo code of PLAY. So if you wanted to buy a newer game, you can get it cheaper. My husband got DA:I for himself because of it.

If you've already got an Xbox One (which I don't, so I'm not endorsing it) this soon-to-be-released 30th anniversary Rare Replay compilation of classic Rare games just might be the game deal of the century. Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, and Jet Force Gemini alone are worth more than the price of admission. There's a trailer on YouTube:

The only question in my mind is whether the screen resolution has been brought up to the standards of the Project 64 N64 emulator. I can hardly imagine that it hasn't been, but no assumptions should be made until some customer reviews are in.

Dragon Age Inquisition!

Haven't picked it up in a couple of weeks, but have been thoroughly enjoying it to the point where I've become totally distracted with completing every side quest before I move on! Because it's a bioware game that probably will mean that the big bad will have conquered the world without me looking by the time I was done! XD It'll be worth it though for all the pretty armour!

Regarding the Rare Replay collection mentioned a few posts back, they evidently have brought the resolution up from N64 to Project 64 standards. Here's some game play from the first world you enter in Jet Force Gemini. You might want to jump to the 11 minute 45 second mark to skip the introductory stuff.

Note the difference between Jet Force Gemini's 3rd person targeting system and the much more common 1st person targeting. The former appeals to me a lot more, as I prefer seeing the character I'm controlling within the game environment rather than seeing the game environment through that character's eyes. Once you've got the aiming system down, it's actually far more accurate than this preview might suggest. The environment of each world--and there are many--is also much deeper and more complex than what is seen here.

Getting back into playing some more Guns of Icarus. I bought the game a year ago and it's still keeping me entertained; according to Steam I've clocked almost 200 hours into it.

It's a really underrated game in my opinion, it's honestly been some of the most intense online gameplay I've ever encountered. Viseral steampunk airship battles, multiplayer co-op where you and three crew mates are trying to fly and maintain a ship, all while trying to blast your opponents out of the sky. Communication is key; having crew members that use a microphone is very helpful.

I recorded one of my recent playing sessions. I decided I'd take on the difficult task of flying the ship; luckily I had a good (albeit a bit oddball) crew, who kept the ship repaired and put up with my awful flying:

I have been binge playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate whenever my writing for the day is finished. However, as the new Star Wars Battlefront will be coming out soon I've been playing a ton of the second one for PS2 in anticipation. All about that Galactic Conquest.

Bought Zombie Army Trilogy while it was on sale last weekend. It's a totally on-the-rails shooter, but fun when you fancy sniping Nazi zombies for half an hour, and this version lets you skip the tedious boss fights that I hated in the original game.

Who just played all four types of Galactic Conquest in Star Wars Battlefront 2? This guy. Who will be doing it again when he gets the chance? This guy.
Needless to say, I'm looking forward to the new release.

I just got myself a new setup for my laptop, and decided to start a replay of the NWN series on GOG. So far it's a blast! I love this game because it reminds me of a time period when I was really getting into fantasy. NWN came out the summer before I entered 7th grade, and although I had been reading fantasy for a couple of years at that point, it was right around when I began to really dive into the genre.
