What games are you playing?

Inthe 1980s ans1990s I was involved in steam RR preservation ( I still am with a 2 foot narrow gauge line her in Maine) and I did a lot of engineering driving experiences in the U.K. varying between one day "courses" as the one I did on the " Flying Scotsman" at Birmingham where the morning was learning how to drive a small steam switching engine and the afternoon driving the Flying Scotsman up and down about 1/3 mile of track .

The best were the ones that took a week as the 9F driving one I did at the Watercress line where the 3 of us did everything from cleaning out 5he smoke box and waking up the engine early the morning then driving it up and down the full length of the line and pulling a full rake of 1950 and 1960s coaches the two of us doing the 'course' traded off the job of fireman and driver and you got 5he feeling of really knowing what we were doing. It was wonderful fun and at the end of the week we felt we had really earned the blisters on our hand and knocks cleaning the engine... all the details of when to add sand starting up on a grade with weight of all those coachs of bring it to a stop at just the right spot in the stations, of tending the fire to have enough steam for 5he hills but not too much that 5he safety valve would blow off...

It is a very happy memory of those years.
I envy you. My history with real life steam railroading is zilch, even as a mere observer. I'm old enough to have witnessed steam firsthand during its final years. Alas, the Cotton Belt line that ran through my small hometown was one of the very first to completely mothball its entire steam roster. Didn't see my first live steam in action until very early in my military career, during a one or two day stay somewhere in Southeast Asia. Came across a smallish train yard with a decent number of steam locos in operation. At the tail-end of that career I was stationed in Japan two years and loved to ride its expensive passenger train network. But that, of course, wasn't steam driven.

Hearts of Iron 4 Kaiserreich mod.

Alternate history mod that (imo) is better than the original game.

What if Germany won WW1? Fascinating stuff. Playing as a revanchist Russia gobbling away at Eastern Europe as the European powers are too consumed with war to care.

I'm something of a one-trick-pony these days, devoting the bulk of my (considerable) gaming time to Transport Fever, though I do sneak in some modded Daggerfall Unity sessions now and again. I still create and publish TpF videos of various steam trains traveling between railway stations. That's likely to end soon, as my map is becoming something of a stutter-fest due to the amount of scenic detail I add. Here's my most recent episode:

If you've never played Blade Runner you really should. It replicates the atmosphere of the film perfectly.

Currently playing Sherlock Holmes the Devil's Daughter on my Xbox One. I am still feeling out the game mechanics but it is an interesting mix of challenging quick time events, skill maneuvers, and clue connecting. You have to use a focus mode to pick out clues below the surface as well as inspect items closely. I have already begun to try putting clues together in a section that looks like synapse connections. Also, I had to play as a street urchin following a man for Mr. Holmes and I had to cross a beam two stories up. To do it you had to keep symbols for the left and right thumbsticks inside circles on their respective sides of the character. Of course there was a lot of drift and play fighting your efforts.

I played thru the outer worlds a couple times, now I'm playing mass effect Andromeda because I wanted to play a game that looked like an advanced tech sf setting instead of a steampunk in space game. I think a lot of games go for this weird steampunk or deco look like the BioShock games, the outer worlds, fallout, etc. I like a game with a more beliecable advanced tech look sometimes

I’m playing a bit of Outer Worlds, Zelda botw (for the 100th time) and am strangely addicted to the new Layton game on the Switch :D

As an aside ramble, How is the Switch doing? Google Stadia seems to have died a death, but is the Switch building momentum?

Wow, its been 10 years since I commented on this site!!! Crazy. (but I got an email about this thread, so here i am) I am currently playing Alien: Isolation, Fallout 76, and Metro Exodus! Having a hard time with the Alien game because I'm so terrified I can barely function, lol. Had the same problem with Dead Space, which I didn't finish.

I'd forgotten about Half Life games being free until the end of the month. Now playing Half Life 2 and surprised at how good it plays and looks with maximum settings on my iMac.
Half life 2 is one of my favorites. My gamertag is aylxluvsfreeman. You can tell how much of a crush Aylx has on Gordon Freeman, its adorable.

I haven't played a video game in over a year, but am tempted to venture back into the gaming world just to play HL:A. Although I'm frankly scared to delve into VR; I had enough of a problem with video games consuming my entire life as it was, I really don't know if it's a good idea to plug myself into the matrix that is VR. . . I might never come back to reality.

My lifestyle limits my gaming capabilities. Back in storage I have a whole collection going; which I dig out whenever I'm home with the family.

PS4: Just finished Lost Sphear. Also, just finished Beyond Human; this game is the biggest emotional rollercoaster I have ever played.

I just purchased a Switch as it's the most portable console you can get, so suits me and my lifestyle nicely. Have been playing some classic Mario games, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and just purchased Nino Kuni Wrath of the White Witch to replay on it.

Also, have a group of friends who get together to table top game every couple of months. We find a coffee shop in Beijing and hunker down for 5 hours or so playing Betrayal, Munchkin, Killer Bunnies etc. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon and meet some other expats.

I quarantined with an 80 hour rush of Stardew Valley. The farm is doing great but I decided to take a break and focus on writing and reading, lol. When I'm frustrated with my neighbors I've been taking out my frustrations by blowing up entire apartment buildings in the very grim Brigador (which might be interesting to those of you who like dark and cynical science fiction as well).

Sometimes I pop into Tabletop Simulator for a nightly game of Dungeons and Dragons with tea. Also very pleasant.

This may be what my retirement looks like one day, haha.

Since moving flat, rebuying a PS4, and setting up a (tiny) dedicated 'computer and gaming room' I have re-worked my way through Kingdom Come Deliverance, a game with such a wonderful atmosphere, graphics and characters it just begs to be played. I have also completed the first three levels of Dishonor 2 as a free demo, although I'm not sure if the cartoonish characters and setting really applealed enough for me to want to continue with the full game. It reminded me of a pumped-up Studio Ghibli film, and although there's nothing wrong with that, I generally like my games to be a bit more ... thoughtful.

The Talos Principle is very cheap on PS4 this month so I bought it. I heard about this game a long time ago when I was playing The Witness and I have to say this is almost as good as that was. Really nicely weighted puzzles (whereas The Witness was sometimes a bit too hard) and nice settings based on ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt, with an intriguing philosophical and science fictional backstory that, unlike most games I have played, is also well worth paying attention to.

Continuing my game of Stellaris (all DLC except Lithoid Species Pack, mods: Glavius's Ultimate AI) I started on 19 June. I chose a Shattered Ringworld as my origin/homeworld, then found a Ruined Dyson Sphere only 3 systems away.

I've decided to try a new game on a higher difficulty setting, no mods. Again Shattered Ringworld origin.

Finished Far Cry 5, Far Cry New Dawn is in the mail to arrive at the end of the week, then looking forward to the (Breaking Bad inspired/character-linked) Far Cry 6 due Feb 21.

Yes, I like the Far Cry suite of games!
