Hmmm, interesting... Yes, that's possible. Though I would not expected it, seeing as usually writers try to achieve a degree of association between the reader and the characters. As in, indentifying with them, rather than shocking them. And we KNOW Martin's good at making us identify with characters. I mean, looks at what he's done with Jaime! I actually LIKE the man now!

No, Eurytus, it
isn't. You people talking about "actions." The reason some people disliked how Cat treated Jon were NOT her actions. It was her attitude. You compare the way she behaved with Ned's not putting Jon in the line of succession. That WOULD be an action - and one with very serious consequences (not to mention the fact that there's no reason to believe that Robert would have granted this. it was never a wise choice.) Ned was restricted in this. There were more than one consideration. Ultimately, I think it was not an option, not a choice.
That's what you get with actions. Attitudes, esp attitudes within your own household, are a much more flexible thing. She could have acted differently. People would only have thought better of her for it. She CHOSE not to. Perhaps to indirectly get back at Ned for keeping secrets. Purhaps because she just didn't like Jon. It doesn't matter.

Not at all. By the time she said it, my mind was already made up about her.

I think Cat treated Jon terrribly.
Why?
I can't say where exactly but I sure got that impression.
Not exactly cut and dried.
::sigh:: Didn't realize we were in court. Also thought the very point of this whole forum was to discuss
opinions - let me say that again: OPINIONS!
And, in any case, what anyone thinks and feels about anyone else is never orbitrary. This does not mean I would condemn Cat to some horrible death at a trial for being mean to a child. I just wouldn't come anywhere near her, if I had to live in that world. Personal. Opinion.

Effective characterisation? You believe that someone’s attitude towards another can be summed up in one sentence. Moreover one sentence uttered at a time when the person involved is close to spiralling into insanity (as Cat herself acknowledges she was close to later).
Not insanity. Grief. People in that state of mind, or absence of mind, have no room in them for thoughts of anything but the object of their grief, so they can't be expected to use the niceties of speak that they don't really feel. She said exactly,
exactly what she meant. Can you see her screeming that at Aria? Aria looked too much a Stark, too, you know. Your own point, there.

In that case perhaps we should condemn Tyrion for telling Jamie that he killed Joffrey. After all, finding out the truth about Tysha is obviously no excuse.
Jaime was a grown-up. And he
did very much deserve it, though that's utterly beside the point.

LOL!

OH, that's good.... At least this is doing someone some good. Because it's just driving me up the wall with the stubborn pointlessness of it all!

GO READ IT!
(Actually, it's motivating me to a re-read, which isn't nice. I have a To Read pile that's wildly out control and growing growing growing... )

I don't think that it's a crime if Cat doesn't want Jon around when Ned is leaving. And I don't hate Cat at all, it didn't happen so much in all of her chapters but still she is a strong character. I really want to know what is going to happen to her after Thoros did his "magic".
Ah, a voice of reason.

I have said, several times, that I don't consider it a crime. Cat was perfectly within her rights. Most importantly, I don't think that either Jon or Cat dwelt on it (they really didn't have time for idle thought, now did they?

). And I'm glad of that. But I blame her for the fact that Jon feels himself to be a bastard. YES, I know that's what he is. NO, I don't expect that anyone needed to be fooled about it. But no one made her rub it in his face. That's both unnecessary and hurtful.
Because Cat is such an important character and gets so much time centerstage, I had
hoped she would be less petty. That is ALL.
