What's the last movie you watched (2010)?

Just watched The Golden Compass (It's called Northern Lights, damnit!), and... Yeah, it was a load of balls. Complete snowballs. Nothing funny about it, nothing compelling, a plot that had more holes and missing parts than edam cheese and just nothing that good about it.

The kid who played Lyra's friend creeped the hell out of me, it had that annoying twerp whose name I forgot (He's in the first Nanny McPhee film, Love Actually and he had an appearance in Doctor Who), the accents were horrifying, and not to mention there was no real... I dunno, it felt fake. Dakota could be a good actress (Not seen anything else with her in), but she was seemingly older than most of the younger cast members and stood out like a sore thumb - She was taller, she acted way too maturely for her age (Which really just... didn't gel) and I just thought that whilst she could have been great, the way her role was mutilated just ruined it all.

I was watching it thinking "I don't remember that in the book", "I don't remember that in the book" and just with a nonplussed expression. Oh, and for all they tried to be nice and gentle with it, they went and ballsed it up by having one polar bear punch another in the jaw so hard that the jaw flew off, and then he killed him. What? Seriously, What? How on Earth did it fit in with the rest of the film?

It was only worth it for Eva Green's witch (Yummers) and for Jack Shepard, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi and Christopher Lee, all of whom went to complete waste considering their talent and experience.

Sigh. Avoid at all costs, because it's just a load of droppings. The redeeming features can't save it at all. Spend your money on the book instead; It'll last longer.

Agree with you on it, I was rather disappointed (didn't know about the "Northern Lights" though-here the book (even the before movie was out)

was "The Golden Compass" (also Subtle Knife, and Amber Spyglass to complete the trilogy)

\What I DID note is they don't call the trilogy by the name I'm familiar with "His Dark Materials"-too "Dark" I guess:rolleyes:

So I DID watch Toy Story 3(finally) and was pleasantly surprised, liked how they brough the series full circle....now if they just LEAVE well enough alone (but they won't, you KNOW they'll make a TS4-sigh)

Totally agree though I would say that some of the design looked great. Dakota Fanning is a pretty damn good actress - scarily good given her age - and the only reason to watch the Spielberg/Cruse ****-up of The War of the Worlds

The Fighter. For many movies featuring family dysfunction I just don't buy it, with situations I find unbelievable, over-the-top, and stylized. However, for some reason I thought it was very believable in this movie and the acting was excellent. One of the best movies I've seen this year.

It's not Dakota Fanning in Golden Compass ;)

I did like the slightly Steampunk feel of the world, especially the vehicles, but it was never fully utilised to any real degree and when it was put to some use, it tended to look a bit out of place (Such as that three wheeled carriage with the gyroscope in the front wheel).

The movie producers were caught between a rock and a hard place.
They needed parents to take their young ones to the movie, so the whole "we're going to have a second war with God and this time the right side is going to be victorious" went right out the window. I don't know how Pullman felt about what was done to his grand tale, but he should've been horrified.

When your books are about killing God you can't expect Hollywood to do them justice.

The lastest two movies we've watched are Little Miss Sunshine and The Town... both were excellent.

I highly recommend Little Miss Sunshine as it turns out to be more than just another quirky comedy/drama. The little girl who plays the lead is fantastic. She doesn't overplay her part and is quite charming in a very real way.

Very much so. It's am amazing little film, and I think one of the messages it has is brilliant.

Child beauty contests are *horrific*. It is not right on any level.

I saw Kick -Ass and it was a major dissapointment. Should have trusted my instincts and stayed away from this [no rating]. Looking back, 2010 is one of the worst years ever for me, movie-wise.

I've also re-watched the original True Grit in anticipation of the Coen Brothers release. it was OK, John Wayne plays himself, the scenery is grandiose and the script holds well after so many years. [8/10]

Indeed.

We were in stitches when the kid finally did her cabaret style act for the talent part of the contest... definitely a classic movie scene. It was great seeing a normal chubby little girl get the best of judges, the parents, and those creepy kids who were professional beauty contestants.

One of the best cast of actors I've ever seen.

I was disappointed with it. The girl was fine but I thought the whole thing was just another, slightly quirky, slightly indie, non-threatening Hollywood movie.

Although I am not on the same page as you with regards to Kick Ass, might I say how much I admire your avatar. Is that Groo the Wanderer??

thanks, yes that's a Groo cutout.
I love the style of Sergio Aragones, although I'm reading now Calvin & Hobbes and I'm tempted to switch avatars

Regarding Kick-Ass, Ebert expresses his feelings much better than me: some things are unacceptable and there is no excuse for this level of carefully coreographed violence - not as satire, not as comic book, not as entertainment, not as "it's so bad, that's it's good". I'm also not a fan of everything Tarantino did, but I will try never insult anybody who liked the film. You are entitled to your opinion, as I am entitled to mine.

I have a special New Year treat lined up for for tomorrow, if I can find the time: "Ironiya sudby, ili S legkim parom! (1975)" - in English "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!" by Eldar Ryazanov.

I haven't read Groo in ages, but I have fond memories of it! :)

I am starting to read "Lightning Thief", and I'm torn: I like the characters, and can understand why my young one likes it, but on the other hand (and this is PURELY subjective)it's almost written....simplistic. Now, I KNOW it's Y/A, okay-but I've read other Y/A (Redwall is considered Y/A, Anything by Monica Hughes, Harry Potter, even "Ender's Game" is YA where I am!) and they don't read the same way. I will plow through and read it-again, purely subjective :)

Last movie I watched was Megafault, one of Brittany Murphy's final movies. It was awful and she looked strung out during the entire movie. Not sure if it was produced by Syfy or not but it certainly looks like it.

Agreed. Ben Affleck (with The Town) is becoming a very consummate director.

Watched The King's Speech the other day; it would have to be one of the best of 2010 for me. Firth and Rush's acting was excellent. It also had some very funny moments too.

I'll let the mother know. She's a huge Firth fan and she's interested in that film.

Watched Robin Hood Men in Tights on the television the other day. I've seen it many times before, but it still makes me laugh.

I finally got to see the Losers and I really enjoyed it. I even liked Chris Evans for a change.

Doing some catch up:

Terminator: Salvation - Better than T3 but not up to the first two's quality.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - More of the same but not quite as enjoyable as the first one.

Independence Day - Re-watched the back end of this on TV while waiting for something else - Still as bad as I remember.

Wall-E - Seen it before. Still one of the most enjoyable films ever.
