Feist's "Magician"...film??

Fannon was white (i've always pictured a moustached Patrick Stewart) but Gardan, captain of Arutha's guard, was black.

A little weird to hear about past experience with knee-capping. Where i'm from it kind-of-means something different.

Still painful though i'd imagine.

I've taken a liking to Mel Gibson as borric and his friend Angus MacFayden from Braveheart as Rodric. But the hardest question is Macros. Someone mentioned to me about john malcovich but i definately don't see him as that. He's the hardst one i've tried to place.

Plus, who'd you think could tackle Aglaranna - i've always taken Ellen Pompeo from Grey's Anatomy as someone who could do it well.
What do you think?

No not john malkovich! Macros.... erm what about Steve Coogan? no that was a joke... erm... I think a fresh actor would do the job.

some stabs at parts just for giggles!

ok, i've been thinking about this every now and again... mostly at times when you cant sleep, or your stuck in traffic and should really be thinking about work etc... here's just a few ideas, feel free to blow them out of the water!

Alfred Molina (dock-oc in spiderman 2) as Macros

Robbie Coltrane made older (harry potter as Hagrid) as Kulgan

Benicio Del Toro with his beard - and if he can nail the accent (21 grams) as Borric (although i think he could also play Guy)

Tchéky Karyo (he was the bad guy in bad boys) as Guy BasTira, although i'm not sure if we actually meet him in magician?

John Rhys-Davies (Gimli in LOTR and Sallah in Indiana Jones) as Amos Trask

Iowan Gruffudd (king arthur and fantastic 4) as Arutha

Paul Bettany (a knights tale, wimbledon) as Laurie

I did think of more but they escape me!...

When we talk about bringing in new faces, it's a good idea for both money pot and also character credibility/originality. But in my opinion there needs to be a core of experienced performers in order to set the standard of the piece and also to bring in the dollar at the box office. The roles which would be awesome for the new faces would be the support roles and/or partner roles; i.e. EITHER Tomas or Pug, not both therefore the experienced one of the two can bring more of a performance from the other. Also roles such as Carline, Aglarana, Anita etc. would be perfect for new faces! Although i could quite possibly be very wrong! lol

I think for a young pug you would have to use an uknown actor but for pug/milamber you could use, heheh, chad michael murray??

Paul Bettany is the best suggestion yet for laurie. I don't really think he fits it but its the best i've heard so far and its a hard character to do. He'd need a bit more muscle i think, then i could live with it. Chad michael murray?!
Unlock the dungeon someone needs to pay!

Here was my ideas. I'd better brace myself for the abuse i'll hear for these.

Mel Gibson as BORRIC
Angus Macfayden as RODRIC (robert the bruce from braveheart)
Mads Mikkelsen as MACROS (tristran from king arthur)
Andre Braugher as MEECHAM (casseal from city of angels)
Gary Oldman as GUY

Tom Sizemore as AMOS
Terence Stamp as TULLY (stick from electra - he was in the orig superman)
Donald Sutherland as Kulgan (he has the weight for it now - no offence)
Patrick Stewart as FANNON
Avery Brooks as GARDAN (Captain for star trek DS9 and american hsty x)
Will Yun Lee as KASUMI (from Electra)
Kumiko Asu as KATALA (from Casshern - would want her tanned slightly)

Ellen Pompeo as AGLARANNA (meredith from grey's anatomy)
Jamie Bamber as CALIN (apollo from the new battlestar galactica)
Ray Stevenson as BRUCAL (from Rome and King Arthur)
Kristin Prout and Caroline Dhavernas as the older and younger CARLINE
(Kristin from electra, Caroline from wonderfalls)

Matthew Settle OR Edward Atterton as MARTIN
(from band of brothers/Children of dune)

Ray Winston as Dolgan (not sure)
Paul Bettany as LAURIE (as of maverikk's last message - genius)

AND Hayley Joel Osmond as the either the younger version of TOMAS or as PUG.

I figure certain people like carline, roland, tomas (because he visually changes) will need good actors who look like them to take over (10 year war after all).
But Hayley Joel looks to fit one of the two parts and it puts as Maverikk said "1 out of the 2 leads as someone we know". But the down side is that as the main character pug would have to be played by someone we could make look younger then older later, he'd have to be played by one person.

MAN THAT WAS A LONG MESSSAGE.
OKAY, BERATE (insult) AWAY PEOPLE!

you got someone better for pug? *light bulb glows above head* aha an idea! if you've seen one tree hill, hideous show, the guy who plays chad michael murrays step brother would look likea good pug i think. unless my impression of pug was a fair way off.....

had one. Tripod, lycos & geocities have all been horrible to me.
I'm really just gonna have to bite the bullet and buy a dot-com space.

I'm not really into OC and one tree hill and the like, though it seems its all they show when i turn on the TV, so with my schedule, i hit the DVDs alot.

The problem with both of those characters (pug and tomas, i mean) is that they are the main ones, you have to really feel for them and get with them or it doesn't work as well. Plus they have to got from 15 to 25, Yipes. Aging potion anyone?

Oh cruel fate, why do you torment us so?! (orchestra music gets louder, big emotional pause on me screaming: "WHY?!") and CUT, roll credits, call me when my muffin gets here. LOL.

What about you Talwin? And the rest of you, what do you guys do? And what got you into feist or fantasy in general?

P.S. i read somewhere that terence stamp doesn't really like these types of movies so what about that actor who played Grackus in Gladiator for Tully, i think he could do it pretty well, he's in underworld Evolution now.

i do 9th grade, heheh
ummm, my friend lent me magician and since then all i've done is read and now i lend him books, good times

do you sit in front of E4 all day everyday talwin. These shows have invaded your brain.
P.S. do you sleep, 6.57 was the time of your last message. Need to get some snooze time man.

Yeah. I think you may need a little sleep. There were, to be fair, some good suggestions there though.

And ill play Pug! my dad can be the older one!... hm...but hes a fat git... no seriously, talking of small actors earlier, Pug and Tomas are the main characters and they both should be played by small actors.

i live in australia..... we don't have E4...... anyone ever read matt reilly's books? good author. how about the black knight out of 'a knights tale' for older pug??

black knight

Do you mean "the black prince of wales" or the bad guy?
the former is james Purefoy... awesome actor, although i think he had a beard at birth i've never seen him able to get that 5 o clock shadow removed... so as a young'un it would be tough especially when the oldest he needs to get is 25... but he could work out to be a good Arutha?!? he is good at sulking and brooding (it's on his CV/ Resume i hear ;) )

I've also got maybe Tom Hollander for pug (the hilarious little mr collins in pride and prejudice)

or if you want big bucks

Joaquin Phoenix or Matt Damon as Tomas, leaving you an up and coming star for Pug!

Hell, if my agent got his act together i'll bloody audition for Pug! (but i doubt that will happen, my agent sleeps through his phonecalls, what a guy  )

I'm with Shadowcraft. Gary Oldman would be an outrageous One Eye!! Loving it!!!

Though, Joaquin Phoenix needs to stay home and just not be in movies anymore and Matt Damon should do the same. Yes, yes, I know.. everyone loves them. Joaquin was best in The Village, where he had virtually no lines. My vote if for Maverikk, after he gets a new agent of course. :)

Script!

This topic (turning Magician into a movie) is a HUGE passion of mine. This year for my independant study in film i have chosen to turn Magician: Apprentice into a script. I have about 10 pages so far and am at the point in the book where Pug begins to learn to ride, after the Choosing.

I also plan to have a storyboard to go along with the script and will probably use still images with actors greenscreened in. I have a severe lack of anything remotely called talent in the drawing department so i'm asking anyone who can draw if they can draw some sketches of people, places or things from the novel. If i do go on the make this script a reality they would be invaluable to production and i would of course give the artist full credit. I don't plan to use any of the drawings in my final project either.

Thanks guys,

Jack

jimmy where are you from and who's the company.
Good to hear someones getting somewhere. Advice = be careful what you ask for or mention on forums though, you'll either get abuse or you could even get someone taking credit for ideas you've used if you do get it done.
Be careful with it man. But good luck.
I'd love to be the one getting it but life's life, what do you work as too.
This forum already knows me, so it'd be cool to know another contender.
Just remember:
Staying true/Money
A company is not gonna invest if you stay totally true, but if you don't stay as true as you can you could lose money from fans.

Like i said be careful, magician is one half and doesn't have a finale, just a cliffhanger for number two and that could prove annoying for producers. You gotta hype up the fan interest and the numbers it will drag in to start with.
Trust me i work in this area. Plus, when you pitch and write the script: snappy and quick, ideas that read slow or take alot to see where you're going often get thrown. You can add the extra detail when filming.

This is something i've been trying to do for a while, others too and i can't say that i wouldn't rather have me do it than you, but trust me you've got all our support. Go for it, give it your all. "Belief is being" so believe totally, tell yourself you can do and pitch it and you'll come off with the confidence that will make them believe you can do it.

P.S. don't be too overzealous, take your time with it, its a hard one to translate thats why the rest of us are still at writing stage (i know a guy who's been at it for the guts of a year) but still you could have the special something to get it done.

Good Luck. And Good News or No, let us know how it goes.
I know we'd all be pretty peeved to find out you got it in a years time.

Gee, thanks for warning the new member about how abusive we are here at SFFWorld, SHADOWCRAFT. You contiinually mention the abuse here. If we are so abusive here, why are you still sticking around? Do you enjoy it or are you just a troll?

All that side, throwing casting choices around is fine and dandy, we all do this. But once you mention that you are going to do a fan-film, student film, fan fiction, write a script, or some other derivatione of an author's work, you are entering the shady world of copyright infringements. Some authors encourage this stuff, others strongly frown upon it to the extent of taking legal action.

Take this as "abuse" or whatever you want, but it is a fact and a warning.
