A bit of a splurge on DVD boxed sets recently.
'CSI: Season One' - Excellent cop show, which has obviously spawned imitators and offspring galore. What's unusual about it is that it is about 50/50 character and plot driven. I think they could have benefited from more emphasis on developing on-going story arcs rather than having the majority of the cases introduced and solved within the normal forty minute duration of an episode, but it's still an excellent first season.
'Supernatural: Season One' - I pulled an unusual one with this series. Knowing full-well that it was exactly the kind of thing I'm into, I deliberately didn't try and watch it when it was on terrestrial TV. I always miss episodes, and spend years trying to catch them when they're shown again. So nowadays I just save myself the effort and wait for boxed sets (I'm currently doing this with Prison Break, Lost Season 2 and 24 Season 5). Anyway, this is an adept fuse of 'Buffy' and the 'X-files', although I don't think this is every going to have the same effect on popular culture or genre TV as these shows. What is, however, is damn good fun, with an emphasis on the horror element over the fantastical. The chemistry between the brother protagonists is pretty good. If I had my druthers I would have preferred they steer clear of a 'monster of the week' plotline for each show, and have placed much more emphasis on developing the longrunning plot throughout the series. The producers and writers could have learned a lot from the type of show that Angel developed into in its final three seasons, where each episode had resolution of a sort, but also pushed along a broader story-arc.

'Battlestar Galactica: Season 2'. I haven't watched any of this yet (I'm waiting till I've got 'Supernatural' out of the way. Looking forward to it.
