Welcome Brightcrow, would love to hear your reaction to American Gods when you've finished it......would also like to hear what you thought of The Little Country, which I've been eying at the library for a while.

New Member Intro

Nice to meet you.

I've been looking at the sight for a little bit and I'm glad I finally found it.

I decided to start writing 'seriously' about a year ago. After warming up, writing some stories and sort of getting into a mindset that I might really be talented and disciplined enough, I had to go back to my grammar and brush that up. Then I spent some time looking up writing tips, rules and whatnot. There are still a lot of gaps in my info which I intend to remedy with help in part from this site. In the near future I'm looking forward to posting some excerpts from various stories I'm working on.
So far my claim to fame is an overly long story sent back from Analog around Christmas of last year (I can understand why now, it's still a good idea but I can see hours and hours of rewriting) but they did include a form letter. Somebody told me that was a good sign.
Just today I had a letter to the editor published in the local democracy/currents events rag 'The Northcoast View'; which was a pleasant surprise. I broke my motto and complained quite a bit about the local art scene.
My stories so far are a lot like the ones I remember from those short story collections I used to read when I was growing up (I'm just now turned forty by the way, I think somebody else who joined recently is too) -Anyway, I guess the goal I have for my writing is to create a more or less intensely interesting story to mature discerning readers who've read a lot of SF&F already. I'd like to eventually move on to novels, then maybe epic series of my favorite characters and worlds. At the moment I'm working on about ten short stories in various stages of completion. One is finished and being proofread, One is 'literary fiction' and I have to decide where to send it.

Okay, well, Hope to have lots of nice interactions with other writers here.

Me, too. I love his short stories, but sometimes that a fantastic short story writer doesn't translate into a fantastic novelist.

Nice to meet you theredpen . And keep at it on the writing front. It's hard going, but so satisfying just in the creation though I ,too, would love to be published.

Thanks for the welcome Priest! Yes, I've decided to set aside most of my hobbies to pursue writing. I still have to have a day job so this is what I do during the day lol. Surfing the net, trying to find inspiration, etc.. I look forward to chatting with you all.

LOL.....just pm'd you the minute I saw your name in the list of who's online, before i got here....WELCOME!! I am thrilled to see you here, dear.

Hello all,

I came to the website for the book reviews and stayed for the message board. The “Big Fat Theory of Fantasy” thread convinced me to join in. That was a truly wonderful thread.

Originally from a small town about an hour from Philadelphia, now in Ohio, with a bit of Tennesse and Louisiana in between.

As for my interests: fantasy more than sci fi. Currently reading Ship of Magic (and Dead Man’s Walk. Please don’t shoot me.) And (recently) writing more than reading.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled reading.........

EDIT: yes, Prunesquallor is from Gormenghast. The name alone was enough to get me reading the book.

Welcome to you, Prunesquallor.....maybe you'll be willing to share with us where your unusual screename comes from?
I know you'll enjoy Ship of Magic.......hope to see more of you on the forums, dear.

Hi everyone!! I linked here from another board, lurked around and saw that this is a pretty active board

Currently, I'm re-reading George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, after which I plan to start reading Steven Erikson's Malazan Books of the Fallen, the first book of which is sitting on my bookshelf right now. I don't write very much, but i enjoy reading other people's writing.

Look forward to sharing ideas with fellow SF/F fans on the board.

Hello yourself, Bregalad. It seems that ALOT of people are re-reading Martin's A Game of Thrones. And welcome aboard!
