I enjoyed Rogue One, although I thought it was a mixed bag. I thought some elements of it were great, like the non-sugar coated battles & the homage pieces, and some fell flat, like the sarcastic robot & the blind force wannabe. In general, all of the supporting characters (i.e. not Jin) seemed weak to me. I think one issue is that there were just too many of them, but most also seemed somehow off or weakly portrayed, like the terrorist/rebel leader. Certain segments also struck me as off or weak, such as the council meeting where they vote not to steal the plans, and the whole empire stores the plans for everything in a single archive with a lot of switches seemed quite contrived. Even some of the scenery, like one of the imperial bases being in the middle of a lava lake that looked straight from Lord of the Rings. Yes, we know they are evil, but since when do they govern from Mount Doom? As a whole, most of the movie struck me as an awkward, lumpy thing, poorly stitched together, that happened to work really well in stretches, especially toward the end.
