Last Movie You Watched - 2020

Only the second of the great Neil Simon's plays to be adapted for the screen, and, well, it shows. A year later he would pen the superlative, perhaps the best of his plays, The Odd Couple (see the review in my thread Trollheart's Box Office) and you can see some of what would later make it into that classic in this movie, but it's kind of nascent? I was a little disappointed. The movie is funny, yes, but I found it quite flat, and Redford and Fonda somewhat wasted, especially Redford, who looks a little lost in it.

I guess you have to allow for it being an early try, moviewise, plus of course I don't know how many changes were made to the original script, but it wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. Still, it's telling that a movie released fifty years ago can still be enjoyed, give you a few laughs and more to the point, is still relevant today.
 
Enola Holmes on Netflix.
If you are an absolute Sherlock Holmes junkie you'll like the fact of an alternate take.
I am close to being so. I found it cute and occasionally charming. The choice to make Mycroft a stuffy boob did make me gnash my teeth in annoyance.
Diverting but certainly not overpowering.
Miz Possum liked it better and has been recommending it to friends. She has not read the originals but did like the Cumberpatch versions. She generally has the best taste in the family. I totally agree about the Cumberpatch.
Still my take is that the Mary Russell, Laurie King books are the best alternate Holmes works filmed or written.
Classics like the Rathbones are a little too stilted for me. King is better than the dozen or so collections of Holmes pastiches or the spate of comedic and serious film remakes that I have seen.

The Magnificent Ambersons - which, despite my love for Orson Welles, I had never seen before. I was bowled over. Loved it.

Got slightly thrown out of the movie when the thought, "where the hell have I seen that staircase before?" crashed into my head...

... it took me a few minutes to work out it was used in The Cat People and then settle back into the film.
Hate when that happens.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 on Netflix - this was very good; telling the story of the Chicago Seven, the anti-Vietnam War protesters put on trial in 1969 for inciting riots. Sacha Baron Cohen is excellent (and funny) as Abbie Hoffman, one of the activists.
 
"Lights out" which I watched on HBO, some childish jump-scare horror. I guess it was successful when it came out a few years ago... but I was unimpressed. I would probably call it garbage, actually. :p
 
Saw that one about 10 years ago, I think. Thought it was better than most, if I remember right...

Did you see where English heritage have their knickers in a twist over the defacing of the Cern Giant with a huge Borat Mask-kinie? as a Borat marketing stunt?
