Last Movie You Watched - 2020

Last thing I watched was Makoto Shinkai's Garden Of Words.
Astonishing visuals, though one scene at the end didn't quite work for me. Needs a re-watch, though.

I watched Bad Education - based on a true story - Hugh Jackman was very good as the school superintendent who, with his 2IC, embezzled millions to fund their lavish lifestyles.

OK: so having recently watched all of the James Bonds in chronological order, I'm working on the Star Wars saga - one a day, in Episode order. Today's was Episode 4 - where we started. :)

Which are your top 3?? I'd have to think about it but definitely Casino Royale (with Daniel Craig), probably Goldfinger then not sure on the third, probably another early Sean Connery film or maybe Live and Let Die if I was going to pick a Roger Moore one...

Or maybe they've all blurred into one for you now? :)

Just Watched "A New Leaf" 1971 staring Elaine May, and Walter Matthau
A New Leaf (film) - Wikipedia Written and directed by Elaine May

A friend sent me a European DVD of it, which ran fine in my region free player... it can be hare to find for some unknown but it is worth seeking out. With the modern focus on having more films helmed by women, it is amazing that this is not on one of the streaming outlets

It was interesting watching the films evolve by watching them in order. Like Doctor Who, I think it tends to be which Bond you saw first that becomes 'your' Bond.

So: Connery was top. Probably You Only Live Twice, but Goldfinger is close. Casino Royale is also up there. And I really like On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I would've liked to see 'the new fella' do more, but having watched the documentaries I can totally see why it didn't happen.

The first Bond I saw at the cinema was Live and Let Die. And I obsessed about The Spy Who Loved Me when I was 13.

Better Than Chocolate - a lovely little Canadian rom com that has me really needing to watch Billy Liar again because of this charming little interlude which has been earworming itself into my head for the last couple of days

I just watched French Connection for the first time. I really enjoyed it. There was a lot of guys following other guys around, but my favourite part was the stunt driving being actual driving. Nice gritty feel to the whole thing.

OK, I was inspired by going back on this thread. I watched This Island Earth yesterday and loved it. I had forgotten how much I loved the older Sci Fi movies. Can you guys recommend a next watch from that? Don't say Forbidden Planet. I've watched that one a ton.

The Andromeda Strain 1971
Logans Run
these are 10 to 20 years newer than your example.. there are a few made for movie serials or for Saturday double features for the kids but most are of such poor quality that they are hard to watch today

George Pal's War of the Worlds?

To be honest most American SF films of the 50s were pretty formulaic. Giant thing terrorises cheap locations till defeated by a combination of military might and/or "it's crazy but it just might work!" science. War of the Worlds kind of subverts that by having the "it's crazy but it just might work!" science ripped out of the audiences hands by terrified mobs just as it's about to be tried out.

Other not quite as formulaic films of the era: Invasion of the Body Snatchers, It! The Terror from Beyond Space (a template for Alien?), The Quatermass films, I Married a Monster from Outer Space, The Thing From Another World ((another template for Alien?)) When Worlds Collide, The Incredible Shrinking Man...

Can't disagree with any of the choices given above.

My absolute favourite is The Day the Earth Stood Still; but War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, The Time Machine (every New Year!), The Incredible Shrinking Man and THEM! are all regular re-watches here. (This Island Earth has recently been released on Bluray and looks great in glorious colour.) THEM! also looks terrific on Bluray, although it is Black & White. Giant ants!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Fantastic Voyage I recently rewatched (as mentioned earlier!) and are both great. The Fly's good too - and not like the Jeff Goldblum version, either.

BUT Ray Harryhausen passed away 7 years ago today - so i'm going to suggest Earth vs the Flying Saucers (already mentioned by Darkflow above) or 20 Million Miles to Earth, with the Ymir:

300

Controversial point: I have watched The Thing From Outer Space in its original black and white and in a colourised version - and I know that this will annoy lots of people, but I prefer it in its colourised version, I think!

Argh! Film colourisation (or 'colorization' - American English; or 'colourization' Canadian English - I never knew it was spelled three different way till just now) is EVIL!
Once the decision had been made to use B&W - for whatever reason, economic or aesthetic, lots more decisions were made about film speed, lighting, lenses, set design, make up and costume that make the result a Black and White film. Not a colour film without colour.

I know! And normally I would totally agree. Which is why this one surprises me...

I watched Earth vs. the Flying Saucers today. I loved it. Thanks for all of the rec's guys.
I'm also going through the Hammer Horror movies. Yesterday was Horror of Dracula which I liked. Today was Curse of Frankenstein which was OK. Not as good as HoD tho.

I forgot that I recently watched Man from Earth, too. I really liked it, but the wife hated it. Different strokes I guess.
